In memory. Italian Alessandro Comodan once heard from friends about a deaf guy who decided to have an operation, and as a director he was very interested in the opportunity to show “the transition from one state to another”, and since Giacomo was a close friend of his sister, there were no problems with trust and Alessandro followed him for two years filming what was happening in life. As a result of his long wanderings around his once-home village, he decided that the film should be simplified, made more general and understandable to everyone, seeing that instead of a documentary, it turns out almost playful about one summer of a deaf guy - ordinary, fleeting, but at the same time full of positive events that fuel the hot and beautiful season. As a result, “Summer of Giacomo” is presented as a feature film and if you watch it without knowing the above details, then you will not even doubt this – three young guys look so natural in front of the camera, but at the same time and the same idea, which looks attractive in words, in fact turned out to be one-time and weak-voiced, that it is impossible to believe that the director is a fan of “Pasolini’s poetry”, because he rather specializes in poems on the fence.
"Giacomo Summer" as a home video includes what families usually film on vacation - as they bathe in a pond, throw land at each other, fight off annoying midges, make funny faces, and in the evening go dancing in some crowded place, glowing with happiness and smiling. But think about it, is everyone interested in watching it, if even some family friends will struggle to suppress the yawn? The degree of interest here is very individual, since there are practically no levers that can capture you emotionally, or moments that tell you about something, and in this case you are just a chronicle, not dry, but very fleeting and replaceable - put one episode instead of another and the total amount does not change; swap everything and you will not get any difference. It turns out to be a very depreciating simplification of the viewer. However, in the film, the director intentionally or not intentionally still found one well-acting lever - the "actors" themselves, who are very sincere and charming, breathe youth and health, soaking up happy days together and sharing part of them with the audience as a couple of very beautiful episodes that would envy any melodrama.
Especially good is the moment when two friends, satisfied and tired, return home on a bicycle after their little adventure on the river, the sun shines, melancholy music plays, in it the singer indulges in memories of events fifteen years ago, which this film will one day become, it seems that the credits are about to appear. And then the last piece is pasted into the picture, which fleetingly and without any charm tells about Giacomo’s new relationship, which also overtook him in the summer, and then the tedious female voice tells about their sad finale due to the poetically outlined, but covered in darkness reason. The design, similar to the films "Café de Flore" and "August" - first with ecstasy tells about some feelings that seem the most important, and then in the end everything is turned upside down and the director dryly explains to us that the most important and close is actually different, putting before the fact, because other means to convince the viewer he exhausted in the first story. As a result, “Summer Giacomo” because of its ending turned out to be a film not whole, breaking in half-word, as summer often does, but while we will have autumn, Giacomo, Stefania and Barbara will have only this summer, lovingly, but still very ineptly captured on film by Alessandro Komodan.
