Monsters vs. monsters Six years after the release of “Hamiltons”, Mr. Altery and Flores decide to film the continuation of the story about a strong family with an unusual “illness”, which, on the one hand, is a curse that forces you to go to murder, and on the other, unites all its members in a close-knit indestructible union. Naturally, with this way of life, our heroes try not to glow in public, and they often have to change their place of residence, and sometimes their own names. What will surprise the Thompsons now, when all the main surprises were revealed in the last part?
And, in fact, almost nothing: another movie from the series “Don’t believe the exciting trailers”. It is sad to state the obvious facts: again deception and provocation! Instead of theatrical thrashiness, bloodlust and dynamism, we get an unbearable thrust and talk about nothing. Apparently, the creators decided to take note of those viewers who do not know anything about the existence of the original, and therefore in the smallest detail to tell in a long prologue about everything that is happening here. It feels like sitting at a lecture and dictating you write down the instructions of a harsh teacher, without any possibility of free presentation of what you heard. This is surprising, because the same thing was said in the Hamiltons. However, it would be fine to deal exclusively with thoughtless straightforwardness. Further in the plot, “our” vampires meet a clan of other bloodsuckers, similarly masquerading as ordinary citizens, and in addition, stronger and more enduring. A war is unleashed in which “fresh” hunters release teeth not for the sake of posturing, but for a specific purpose, which will support for the time being at least some intrigue. Otherwise, it is difficult to find meaning in the battle of two communities, whose representatives on both sides are monsters! That's what they call themselves. Of course, in the first film, there are essentially no positive characters, but the qualitative difference is that there masterfully kept the attention around the family secret, and also well revealed the characters of all its members, a lot of time was given to the growing guy who until the last tried to fight those terrible things that happened in his house, tried to renounce what he himself is. It was shown convincingly and quite emotionally. What's here? There is no trace left of the dark pathological narrative.
Adult Francis is only able to twist a luscious face and peel the jaw a couple of times. Joking about “Twilight” and the raving nature of the vampire images shown, he, however, with such abilities, is a direct road to the place he is trying to relax! Little Lenny, whose antics were so sensibly frightened in the previous part, is also nothing. And where is the older brother with his sincere desire to preserve the family and the traditions imposed by his parents? Where are the twin brothers and sisters known for their daring lustful behavior? Yes, they are formally present here, but in fact there is no energy from this very presence, just a couple of memorable episodes. The movie is called “Thompsons”, but opponents, although not particularly annealing, but still charisma and ingenuity overshadow those who seem to be the central characters of the picture. Let us add here for some reason a woven line with a representative of an elite bloody family, who, for a second, does not eat blood herself, and does not have fangs at all, but can not decide who she kills: innocent people for the feed of her relatives, or family members after a sudden illumination? As a result, it turns out that neither a sensible drama to blind failed, nor horror to show, nor action and predatory fights to surprise.
But, in fact, in a long list of failures, you can still find a small bright spot. It's a very original look at vampire themes. And they do not call themselves vampires, and, as already noted, thirst for blood is considered a consequence of congenital disease. In addition, contrary to conventional stereotypes, these creatures are not afraid of daylight, but do not possess immortality! They can be easily injured and, like ordinary people, grow and age. Such a deviation is presented as a kind of biological anomaly – the inability to live without human blood, which, perhaps, from the point of view of medicine and science looks more realistic than supernatural monsters that burn from the sun’s rays.
Result. A cruel and bloody confrontation between two “painful” families turns into absolutely depressing action, flavored with dull empathy and boring muttering. In the furnace such sequels, see the first part, it is much more atmospheric and mysterious.
