Love is work, without weekends and holidays I watched this movie for the first time in 2012. Not much time has passed since then, but the New Year holidays for me are no longer complete without this picture. On New Year’s Eve, we all watch great films – “The Irony of Fate”, Ivan Vasilyevich ..., “Wizards”. Under them, we cut salads all over the country and make final preparations for the holiday. And there are films that everyone chooses and includes to create a festive atmosphere. Someone prefers “Home Alone”, someone prefers “Christmas with losers”, someone prefers “Love Actually”. The domestic film “New Year’s Wife” has become more expensive for me than these foreign stories, and there are several reasons for this.
First of all, because he's closer to us. Perhaps one of you has the same double as the main character? (I remember them being sold in a large chain of stores.) Who doesn’t like “Bear in the North” and “Squirrel”? Although we may not call them “helpers”, but perhaps after this film we will think about their philosophical purpose. And who doesn’t have the same paperback books that a heroine brings her boyfriend to teach him to read? The film is filled with these and other little things that make it close and dear. So it is not perceived by some abstract story, but it seems as if it is happening very close, in the next yard.
Second, the film has a really interesting story. Maxim and Dasha, finding themselves in a situation of “everything is difficult” with their soul mates and having a lot of complaints about them, decide to build their ideal relationship. They already know what not to do in a relationship. Their views on love approximately coincide and they decide to start a life together right the next day. The main rule is not to leave and remember that we promised each other to build honest and correct relations.
The main idea of the film is expressed in the words of Dasha: People want love to be a holiday. He came, he was happy and he left. And love is work. Maintaining relationships is a daily work without weekends, vacations. And so the characters try to prove by their example that this is an indisputable truth, that love does not live by itself, we support it with our actions.
Thirdly, the action does not focus only on the love relationship of Dasha and Maxim. Here, in such a small timekeeping, the history of relations with friends, colleagues, ex-girlfriend, ex-boyfriend and mother of the protagonist is organically inscribed. All these lines are interesting in their own way. Especially the line of a married admirer and boss-friend.
And finally, the film “New Year’s Wife” has a festive atmosphere and a real New Year’s aesthetic. We love American Christmas movies for a beautiful snowball, cozy living rooms with a fireplace and other Christmas attributes. It is really beautiful, but far from our reality. In this film, the New Year is shown. With a snowmill, a tree, a corporate party. Maxim’s apartment is decorated for the holiday very stylishly and throughout the film supports the viewer’s New Year mood.
And of course, at the most important moments, snow falls. As in the best traditions of Hollywood. Moreover, in this film, the New Year takes on an additional importance for the characters - this is the expected date of their wedding. If only their “right relationship” endures one New Year’s Eve month.
To sum it up, I really liked this movie. It is no worse than many foreign Christmas comedies.
