Life is bubbling and the engine is roaring!! Motorcity is a project of a rather difficult creative fate. In 2000, Titmouse presented the series to MTV, but they declined the offer, but one of the directors, the project is very memorable and 10 years later, when he became a producer of Disney, he ordered Titmouse season of the series, which by then became a very successful company.
So, the basic information about the world is this: once over Detroit, Abraham Kane and his company began to build a utopian state over the city, thus creating a dome over Detroit, naming the new city Detroit Deluxe, and the old one was named Motor City as a symbol of defiance of the new government, and the company is struggling to take over the city and annex its inhabitants to Deluxe. However, Motorcity has reliable defenders in the face of the gang of riders “Burning” who in every possible way interfere with Kane and raise the people to fight.
Here you need to talk about the characters, the gang itself consists of 5 members:
Mike - the leader of the gang, possessing all the positive human qualities and the former right hand of Kane, but deserted;
Chuck is his best friend, computer genius and, perhaps, the most lively and close to the audience character, since his reaction, although always comes to hysteria, is natural, to all the madness that is happening around him.
Julie is the only member of the gang who lives in Deluxe and therefore works as a scout, but at the same time in battle, she is not inferior to the rest of the gang, and besides, she is very sweet and spiritually beautiful.
Dutch is a brilliant mechanic who used to live in Deluxe, but because of his creative impulses associated with graffiti, went to Motor City to live without being bound by frames, and he also has a robot with a full-fledged AI, named Rod, who is also very cute, intelligent and useful.
Texas is an incredibly stupid and equally naive man with the knowledge of a three-year-old, a special negativity occurs when the story focuses exclusively on him and then this character begins to be very annoying, sometimes on the verge of rabies;
On the other side of the barricade are the Deluxe team: The first goes Kane is the head of the corporation named after himself, who wants to capture Motorcity to complete the creation of Deluxe and this is perhaps the most interesting, but unfortunately somewhat one-sided character, since most of the time he is a typical, but very human and living villain, yes, this is in some sense an oxymoron, but this is so, because he has enough time to open up and at the same time, he does not look stupid or comical, but on the contrary, smart and serious, although his motives and methods are still too radical and in many ways wrong, he cannot be called one-valued;
But the others are not so good.
Tully is just an imbecile, no other name for him, and he is Kane's right hand! Of course, there is an explanation for why, but even other characters emphasize this: “He’s Mr. Kane’s right-hand man, he can’t be that stupid!” says one of the guards, by the way, because of him the Burnings escaped several times when they were trapped. And although it is not annoying like Texas, it is still stressful;
There is also a soldier on Kane's side who hates Mike, but he is the most illogical character of all, as the real source of his problems is Kane, although he is quite interesting in himself.
The next thing to consider is the content of the series itself, and that’s where the show’s biggest problems are.
Firstly, about the world of the series, almost nothing is told: it is not clear how Deluxe was built, because it is impossible to take and just buy a whole city with all its inhabitants, it is also unclear what is happening outside the city, we can only assume that there was most likely a world war or a large-scale man-made disaster or something else, also a drawback can be considered a strange study of gangs that inhabited Motorcity, on the one hand they are more or less interesting, and on the other - they almost all season do nothing, or do everything to prevent the Burning from protecting the city! This fact is very annoying. First of all, this concerns the Duke of Detroit, who constantly interferes with the Burning Ones and at the same time does nothing to protect the city, although he constantly states that he is the ruler of Detroit and he is the only one who is really interesting, actively involved in the plot and who has a lot of time to uncover, and the rest of the gangs adhere to their theme, appearance and everything.
And secondly, there are minor problems with the content of the series themselves, since the first 5-9 episodes, in the structure of the narrative, are horribly similar to many animated series of the 90s, where there was a team of heroes who fought with robots, mercenaries and other enemies without any problems, and also destroyed the “cunning” plans of the villain and so from series to series until the end of the season. And in Motor City, at first, the same story happens, which is frustrating. Also not in favor of the series is the presence of some strange and illogical things, their description will be a spoiler, but they are difficult not to notice.
However, this is where all the drawbacks of the animated series end, and in fact even these 5-9 series, taking into account their shortcomings, are very interesting and all thanks to the level of implementation - and it is incredible!
Beautiful, smooth animation! A very unusual and bright visual style, in which a riot of colors and effects constantly reigns! Fast, furious and fast action on high-speed cars, with incredible tricks, kulbits and shooting! And, of course, incredibly cheerful, loud and really pathetic rock music, which sets the pace for everything that happens! And the story, although at first simple, but catchy and over time, becomes more and more interesting, and since the 10th episode, the plot and script of the series began to become more complex, smarter and more emotional, hanging guns on the walls to then shoot in the last 2 episodes - where the real epic begins! All this is combined into an amazing and one of the best series in history, which gives new vivid emotions and eats into memory, forcing you to endlessly think about yourself and hum music from opening.
But Motor City failed and was almost forgotten, and the reason for this is a mystery. It becomes doubly incomprehensible when you see how much soul and effort was put into it and how much the authors wanted to do it. Moreover, they clearly expected to continue, since there are many trifles and storylines that the authors clearly reserved for the future, but, unfortunately, the continuation is unlikely.
It’s not a problem not to watch the series. Motor City deserves to be seen and known, and even more so, it deserves to be remembered, so look and you will not regret it.
