1957. French engineer Pierre comes to Nagasaki to supervise the construction of tankers. The man begins an affair with a local girl Noriko. Having met the Swiss Ritter, who has lived in Japan for a long time, the Frenchman begins to think that he, Pierre, does not keep anything in Europe, he does not have to return there. Suddenly, Pierre’s ex-girlfriend, journalist Françoise, arrives in Nagasaki, collecting material for her book on Asia.
Françoise is much older than Norico, but she is a compatriot of Pierre, they have something to remember. Who has the best chance in this love triangle? And then it turns out that the word “typhoon” in the title is not just a metaphor, we are talking naturally about a natural disaster that is going to cause an official visit to Nagasaki.
The French obviously tried very hard to make a masterpiece – they spent on top stars in France and Japan, on color film (and I’m not even sure which of these was more expensive). The modern viewer is not surprised by the mixture of genres, but this picture begins as documentary, turns into a melodrama and ends in disaster. Very interesting movie, I have to say.
P.S. When you watch movies with a certain actor for several days in a row during a movie marathon, you begin to perceive him as your neighbor. I already have a whole "neighbor" entrance. I'm not a booze drinker, but I'd like a Bavarian beer with Geert Fröbe.
