Noord's greatest weakness James Rolfe and his alter-ego Angry Video Game Nerd in the English-language segment of the Internet - a personality almost legendary. Yes, video game reviews were done before him, not he was the first to splash his emotions on the camera in this way, but it was James who was destined to become one of the most popular game reviewers. Not least due to the fact that James is constantly drawn to experiments in his videos and he does not lose the opportunity to turn his videos into short themed comedies.
It is not surprising that the title of the film ensured his success on the portal IndieGoGo, where in just a week he raised the required seventy-five thousand dollars to implement all the ideas of Rolf.
So what is “Angry Video Game Movie Movie”? This, first of all, a huge layer of fan service, a real clondike of Hollywood clichés, jokes and references. It's a movie that doesn't make any sense to watch unless you're familiar with the original show. The plot of the film revolves around the story of the game “E.T.”, which, according to legend, was so terrible that its quality caused the real collapse of the video game industry in 1983. The topic for Neurd is sick, because it is not the first year he was asked to make a detailed review of this piece of software code. And so in such a very original way James Rolfe designed his new review - literally inserted it into the very end of the film, in the credits, before that, I will not hide, delighting the viewer with a funny parody plot, sparkling, albeit grotesque, characters and the scale of the events taking place.
Separately, I would like to focus on special effects. In a film where the plot takes on such an epic scale (and there is room even for the destruction of the city), they just have to be good, which is difficult to expect from independent cinema, as they say, “for pennies”. James Rolfe came out of this situation original, using a minimum of computer graphics. Yes, all the scenery, from a video game store to the cockpit of a spaceship, is done in the good sixties, as was done in Doctor Who and Star Trek at the beginning of their formation. All the more fascinating are the action scenes, where all the meat is done with the help of toy cars and model airplanes! There is some magic in this, when the fighting scenes become schematic, where they are up to the colorful fights of “Transformers”. Not enough money for a normal render? Maybe. But it looks like fun!
Of course, I repeat, having no idea about the source, the viewer will not understand what kind of nonsense he included. This movie is not for the “elite” or “geeks”, it is, as they say, “for their own”. AVGN's film for its fans is a kind of declaration of love and gratitude for not being forgotten even so many years later. It would be wrong to judge this film. If you judge objectively, then six, maybe seven with a stretch. However, let me remind you that this is a “garage” project and the scale for this level is simply phenomenal. It was interesting to see that.
