"Evil Halloween" or "Got the Wrong Place in Part Twentieth" I was waiting for this debut work of an unknown American director Mickey Keating long before its appearance, although I am not a fan of this kind of horror. Therefore, my opinion about it after watching, I think, will be less objective.
The beginning is immediately intriguing, and the plot does not hesitate to develop. Terrified in hysterics girl Lovely (Lisa Marie Summerscales) calls her ex-husband Tom (Dean Kates) on Halloween night and begs him to come to her motel, as she has something very bad. Discovering a bad wife with the corpse of an unknown man, Tom is woven into a terrible story. The murdered person turns out to be a member of not the most peaceful religious sect, the participants of which will not hesitate to arrange a “fun life” for the heroes.
I liked the actors. Despite the fact that in the track records of the performers of the main roles are mainly short films and series (not counting Larry Fessenden, who appeared in a couple of episodes, who, however, also played few primary characters anywhere), they played very well and cheerfully, conveying the tension of the atmosphere. Their personalities, however, are not disclosed at all, this is disappointing. Terrible sectarians will please fans of slashers and quite frighten unprepared viewers.
The picture, in some places interestingly injected with light noise (though I do not know where the story came from), catches the eye and looks quite high-quality. Despite the fact that almost all shooting is conducted in the dark, what happens on the screen is clearly visible in daylight, and it looks if not masterpiece, then at least not boring. In general, given the obvious low-budget film, it was shot quite decently. The small number of actors, lack of effects, darkness and hopelessness even make it more realistic.
I've also found some clowns. In one place, the weighty force of blows to the face clearly does not correspond to the consequences of these blows - they are very insignificant. Yet the heroes do not even try to hide at least some of their fingerprints from the crime scene, which is very strange.
The film lasts an hour and a half, while leaving a double feeling: it seems that it does not seem at all lengthy and looks at a time, but it seems that nothing special happened on the screen. The predictability of the finale matches the cliché of the genre. However, there is something in this film. I would recommend it to amateurs.
