Gidget and surf culture. Despite the rather simple plot, the film was the starting point in the formation of surf culture among American youth. The film was based on a book by Frederick Conner, based on the life of his daughter, Katie Conner. Friends of Katie and came up with the nickname Gidget, composed of the words "Girl" and "midget", girl and baby. It was followed by a series of beach movies and TV series that led to a real boom in surf culture.
So what's buying this movie? First, the purity and innocence of the heroes. I didn’t find any negative characters there. After viewing, there are no negative emotions. Secondly, a bright and colorful picture. Beach, sea, waves and beautiful girls, what else do you need? Third, good songs, especially the title, catch the ear. And, fourth, bright main characters.
As for the actors. I've always liked Sandra Dee. She is artistic, probably let know her Slavic roots (Tsymbalak by mother). I never doubted for a minute that I was seeing a typical teenage girl. All complexes are available and everything is very reliable. And a very good comedy potential, which will affect the subsequent films. To me, James Darren is less convincing. But judging by the fact that he starred in subsequent films, he convinced American audiences. And I can't help but mention Cliff Robertson's excellent work. Kahuna is a kind of uncle, an authority for young people.
Eventually. A light and beautiful film that will especially appeal to fans of Sandra Dee.
