The action takes place during the American Civil War. Major Kearney, demoted from the army of the Northerners, infiltrates a gang of raiders who steal horses necessary for the Union Army. He is trying to find out the name of the traitor in the army of the North.
A kind of spy detective in the scenery of a Western from the director Andre De Toth. Hungarian by birth, he became famous for his westerns and noirs of the 40s and 50s, now highly regarded for the gloomy atmosphere and psychological approach. He is also known as the husband of Hollywood star Veronica Lake and one of three famous directors (along with D. Ford and R. Walsh) of the Golden Age of Hollywood who wore a black armband on his face (de Toth’s eyes were lost in his youth).
This picture is quite professionally staged western. Above-average he is raised by Gary Cooper's play. He always looks great in his Western role. In the background, actors are also quite well-known in many films of the genre of those years (Paul Kelly, Lon Cheney Jr., Philip Carey, Guinn Big Boy Williams, Alan Hale Jr.).
Despite a very predictable scenario, it is quite a strong and dynamic picture, very winning thanks to the participation of Gary Cooper in the lead role.
