Three gentlemen can drown the Devil himself. Colorful, exciting, adventurous, funny, but absolutely having nothing to do with historical reality, the main purpose of which is to captivate the viewer with maritime romance. And for this, as you know, all means are good. Director Robert Webb is far from new in the genre of adventure, so he knew perfectly well that he must necessarily include such a film: a charismatic protagonist, a beautiful companion and a recognizable historical era. The tape stands "shoulder to shoulder" with such films as "Pirates of the Coast" (1960) and "Pirate Morgan" (1960).
All this in the Pirates of Tortuga is fully available. Captain Bart Paxton (Ken Scott) is a handsome 2-meter tall man who simply cannot but like women, especially those like Meg (Letitia Roman), who can not be called otherwise than a "shit in a skirt"! In the film, he commands a ship called the Mermaid. Owning a privateer's patent, Bart clears the seas of breeding pirates. In the 17th century, it was practiced by many, and such a craft was considered a respected occupation, combining patriotic impulse and profit, as opposed to unlicensed piracy, condemned everywhere.
After a long voyage, Captain Bart Paxton returns to England, where he receives a new assignment from the British Admiralty - to go to the Caribbean Sea, where the formidable pirate Henry Morgan is rampaging. The mission is impossible, because at the peak of his power, Henry Morgan led an armada of up to 40 ships, with a total crew of up to 3,000 people. Of course, Bart is unable to defeat such power in open combat, so he plans to attack Morgan in his “residence” – on the island of Tortuga.
In what you see, the viewer will not be disappointed, for romantic adventures are the good thing that nothing bad happens in them, even if it comes to such a bloodthirsty and odious figure as Henry Morgan. To be fair, the film is not all fiction. In particular, this is the final scene of captured Morgan. Surprisingly, the character of Robert Stevenson, who plays the legend of the seas, is right, saying that he will never hang!
P.S. Upon his return to Jamaica, Morgan was arrested and sent to England. Everyone thought that the royal court would hang the pirate for all his sins, but the court could not forget his services. After the staging of the trial, the decision was made: "Guilty not proven". Morgan was sent back to Jamaica as Vice-Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Navy.
