Gamera. Dark past. The popularity of Godzilla already in the 1960s led to a lot of imitations, the most famous of which was another Japanese film epic about another giant monster - the turtle Gamer. But if the films about Godzilla always laid a certain meaning, then the tape with Gamera from the very beginning was shown as a pure imitation, devoid of the outstanding imagination of the authors and designed exclusively for children. That was until the fourth film, "Hamer vs. Viras."
In the same film, everything changes greatly - the creators have not just drops of their own imagination, but a whole fountain. A fountain of pure absurdity. Some borrowings from the films studio Toho still could not hide – this is an attack on Earth by aliens who want to colonize the planet. The absence of a satisfactory script or just a desire to create a quality film is evidenced by the fact that the alien race, their home planet, and the huge monster appearing in a unique way are one name - Viras. Alien invaders are octopoids. And given not only the limited capabilities of the time, but also the then craving of studio Daiei to brag, you can imagine how carelessly created the design of the aliens. There is hardly a more absurd and miserable monster than Viras in any science fiction films and TV series. Bloated eyes, head with blades, beak... There is no desire to even remember other details, the benefit of them in the film is almost not. The design of the spacecraft, the scenery of coastal cliffs - everything is done simply hulking, although, in theory, it should decorate the footage, attracting attention.
Modeling battles with jumping, throwing stones, and even flying was in those years, great difficulties, but in "Gamer vs. Viras" effort is not felt at all - Viras seems to have no weight, so easily he jumps or falls somewhere. Underwater, space and ground events look out of hand bad, and it does not even overlap with decent acting. And the point here is not whether talents were invited to the shooting or not - the script is so spelled out that few people have time to adequately reveal themselves.
But the main drawback is the absence of any messages. Terrible scenery and ridiculous battles can be criticized for a long time, but after the end there is only one question: what is the meaning of everything seen? No...
