Rebirth. Indians love the topic of reincarnation, and they also love to shoot on these topics. And it's often interesting. That's what happened with this movie. Yesterday I watched it for the first time in the filmography of Sanjaya Kapoor. The film was shot with the assistance of his father Surinder Kapoor and at the studio of his older brother Anil Kapoor. And at the very Sanjay this is his debut role in the movie, his very first role. But he did a great job with it. That was really good, good. Although it often happens that once you do something for the first time in your life, it turns out great (not always the first pancake, it is tested on yourself), and then the next time it is either better or worse (more often worse).
I didn’t know that Tabu was once paired with Sanjay, in this film I saw them for the first time. Both here are young, beautiful, happy. The taboo is 24 years old here, very young, and chic as always. A Sanjai is very similar to the older brother, only the mustache is missing. But everything else is largely copying Anila - gait, habits, gestures, hairstyle, presentation of your character. Although there is a personal one, movement in dancing, smile, turn of the head, manner of conversation. You can see it right away.
However, it is not clear why the film was translated as "Mysterious Love", not quite a suitable title. I think it would be more correct to translate it - "Love through the ages", because we are talking about the rebirth of the souls of two lovers. This is a wonderful film based on reincarnation. I'll go a little deeper into the story in the film, in order.
Past. Late 19th century, India is ruled by the British, they have a lot of Indian military. And here one of them, Sipai Shantanu escaped from the army, not wanting to stay there, and hiding in the depths of the jungle, he meets the beautiful Lachi Lachi, she is the daughter of the leader of the local tribe, whom even the English fear, therefore they do not go to the jungle. The two of them met, fell in love and wanted to get married. But, in the way of their love there are many obstacles: father Lachi on the one hand, the English looking for a fugitive soldier, on the other hand. And so the shaman of this tribe tells Lachi that Shantana is her eternal lover, that in all their past births, they were in love, and there were always difficulties in the way of their love, and always on the eve of marriage they died together, holding hands. And that this will continue until, in one of their subsequent births, they finally get married and live together for the rest of their lives, so that their souls may finally find peace. They will die that time too.
Our days. The son of the police commissioner Sanjay, meets at one of the parties on the occasion of the New Year holiday, the daughter of a local ship magnate - Sonia. Again, there are a lot of obstacles and a lot of enemies in their way. The fathers of lovers hate each other with fierce hatred, the story a la Montague-Capulet, only here everything is built not on insulting the honor of the family, but on confrontation in business. The police commissioner is preventing the tycoon from doing his dirty smuggling. And then, their children love each other, and even remember their past. And then the assistant of the daddy Sonia, decided to marry his son to take possession of his wealth. In general, a vicious circle.
There’s a lot to worry about in the movie, especially in the second half. Do you sit and think that these two will not be able to unite their destinies again, will they die again on the eve of the wedding, will their souls continue to wander in the space of time until they finally find a time in which they can get married and be together? This is all very exciting when watching. All the scenes are so beautifully captured. Village life is shown beautifully. I like how everything is shown, and in modern times, and memories of the past.
For the debutant Sanjay played perfectly. He has a very strong image, all his experiences are very natural, though I liked Shantana more in the image , it is more vividly shown.
Taboo is great as always. She is irresistible in any film in any role, here both of her heroines liked her, and Lachi and Sonia. Well done.
Said Jafri as the father of Sonya, an angry and irreconcilable businessman, was also good, but he had many such roles in the 90s. I liked Amrish Puri more, as the leader of the tribe and father of Lachi. Here's a powerful image, and the look is terrifying, just a la Mogambo (from Mr. India). It was great. It's not a big part, though.
Akash Khurana, in the role of the father Sanjay also liked, he worried about his son very naturally. I also want to mention Arunu Irani, in the role of Sonya’s nanny, Panna, who raised her from birth, and treated her as her own daughter. Aruna in this role is also not the first time, and as always, perfectly showed her character.
Dalip Tahil as usual in those years, in the role of the main villain, hunting for the wealth of his companion. Deepak Tijorie is also good as his son. It's as usual.
In general, the film is interesting, the story is exciting, everything is based on two main actors - Sanjay Kapoor and Tabu. Good for both of them. I loved the music in the film and the songs were beautiful. I counted as many as 8 songs in the film, but they fit very well into the plot of the film, each song in its place.
Look, you will not regret . Moreover, in my opinion, 1995 is not the most successful year in the history of Indian cinema, against which this film stands out. So I don't understand why "Mysterious Love" wasn't successful with the Indians. It seems that my tastes are radically different from the tastes of the Indian audience.
