Antonio Sabato is an honest journalist, in search of truth and death not fearing. From the very beginning of the picture, a murder appears before the viewer. A very high-ranking man, former Senator Robertson, was shot dead in his own garage. At the scene, a young man was detained, he is accused of this murder, his guilt is fully proved at the trial and he is quickly sentenced to death through the gas chamber. But things don’t turn out to be so simple, as journalist Eddie Mills, writing articles for a local newspaper, begins to question the guilt of the man accused of murder. He has to unravel the intricate tangle and prove the innocence of the sentenced to death.
Director Alberto De Martino made a good picture, which in Italy at that time came out a large number, with a difference only in small plot deviations. Ahead of all in this part was the incomparable Damiano Damiani, it can be said that the directors of that time, making films with a criminal and political bias, were equal to him. This picture, like many others, of course, loses in many cinematic indicators of Damiani’s paintings. This includes the dryness of the narrative and tension, which the film clearly lacks, it certainly is, but it feels as if it is very superficial and not to the end. But there is a production and a lot of pluses. This is first of all competent directing, a good, albeit straightforward plot, a well-written script, a convincing play of actors and an excellent soundtrack by Peppino De Luca.
Antonio Sabato in the lead role looks great. He's a dedicated journalist. His character does not stop looking for the truth, even when there is a real threat to his life. The hero of A. Sabato is honest and uncompromising, going to the end in his intentions. An excellent actor, who was in constant demand, for the embodiment of many images, from directors of that time. The decoration of the whole picture was Barbara Boucher. A beautiful actress, her presence always makes films exquisite and desirable to watch. In this production, she got the unenviable role of a lowly girl, a fall for money and ready for everything for them, her heroine is not easy and the truth about her is revealed at the very end of the film.
The production turned out not to claim great originality, but interesting and high-quality. Lovers of Italian pictures of the past should like it. Fans of Barbara Boucher also do not miss.
