Maugham's painted veil To love or to be loved?
This question concerns the main character of this tape. She cheats on her husband and does many things she regrets. Soon she will have to go with him to a real hell - the epicenter of the cholera epidemic. This journey will make both look at life differently. The director will perfectly highlight the evolution of the relationship of the married couple. At first they pretend that nothing is happening. They are on different sides of the same room and cannot be together. But it can't be that easy all the time.
And against the background of a difficult family relationship - the vaccine and its fighters. People who don't believe in salvation. An intellectual who shares the secrets of his personal family happiness. All this is presented in the aesthetics of noir, filling the picture with tension and permanent fear.
The bright ending will be completely in line with the book. Cleverly mentioned quote about a dog that stunned will enhance the emotional endgame. We are talking about the famous joke of Goldsmith, ending with the words: “The bitten one survived, the dog stunned.”
I would like to highlight the selection of actors. Eleanor Parker and George Sanders (by the way, a native of St. Petersburg) showed emotional people who intuitively try to find solutions to very difficult questions. Bill Travers and Jean-Pierre Aumont in this tape are more monosyllabic, but incredibly suitable in texture. It was like these actors were playing themselves. Such unity of images could not but affect the quality of the tape - it captivates and captures.
