On April 12, 1961, an event that changed the course of history took place - the first human flight into space. Something happened that the whole world could only dream of. What scientists and designers have been working on for decades has finally been brought to life. This brave hero was the Soviet pilot Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin.
In addition to reports on the radio and in the press, it was necessary to make a documentary about how the Soviet people solemnly greeted their hero-compatriot. The first such documentary was "Man returned from space" Director Ekaterina Vermisheva
.
In this short film, there are still no world-famous shots with Gagarin sitting in the cockpit and saying his famous “Let’s go!”. First of all, this film is about how the Soviet people (and residents of other countries) took this message. Using the technique of reconstruction, the creators managed to reconstruct the events of that day through the eyes of an ordinary Soviet man. We see how people react to what is happening, how they come together and go to Red Square.
In this film, Gagarin first appears at Vnukovo airport already in the rank of major (which he received as an award, bypassing the title of captain). Today, the modern viewer is often shown footage of Gagarin leaving the plane with his shoelace untied. However, for this film, shots were taken from a different angle. In addition, it is clear that Gagarin reports to Khrushchev, and not to someone standing (as was shown during the Brezhnev years).
Foreign newsreels played an important role. It allows you to look at this event not one-sidedly, but from different sides. We see how the French press praises Gagarin, and Yuri Alekseevich himself is called “George the Great” in the headlines.
There are many events in our country that turn into a feat by the media. Yuri Gagarin may not have been the very first man in space (as we are told in various TV shows). However, the fact that he was the first astronaut to safely fly and land remains a fact. Yes, there were other famous Soviet cosmonauts (Titov, Tereshkova, Leonov, etc.), but the name of Yuri Gagarin is known all over the world.
The flight of a man into space is a serious and responsible matter. But it is very important to come home alive. Yuri Gagarin is the man who did this.
