Donkeys and children The outstanding actor Hans Albers was in his own way a unique figure in German cinema, retaining popularity for several decades. His reputation was not damaged even by his participation in several propaganda films made under the Nazi regime. And in old age, he continued to appear regularly on movie screens. One of the last works of Albers was the main role in the comedy “13 donkeys and a sunny court”, which was presented to the public just two years before the death of the actor.
The main character of the film Josef Krapp managed to travel around the world in search of adventure, while his wife took care of orphans from dysfunctional families and even organized a shelter for them called “Sunny Yard” right at her home. Suddenly, Joseph reappears in his native village and begins to tell his children about his adventures. However, a strict and religious Martha fears that her husband will be bad for her children. Therefore, a conflict quickly arises between the couple, which seems insoluble, since Martha demands that her husband leave immediately. However, when Crupp helps the children of the orphanage save thirteen old donkeys from slaughter, Martha looks at her husband with new eyes and can again imagine a future together.
In this sentimental family comedy, the main virtue is the direct play of children and animals, which are known to be impossible to outplay. The plot of the film now seems too sweet and predictable to seriously interest the viewer. Not the most successful role of Albers, which thanks to the charm of the actor can bring some pleasure.
