The bright sadness of love Young architect Inder was in a hurry to his car to a concert of the classical dancer Artie Sanyal, but was in an accident. A year later, Inder healed and accidentally met Artie in the ancient Fort Mandu, unaware that a recent car accident tied their fates.
Director Gulzar has never shot commercial one-day films, his films are distinguished by thoughtful scripts and good acting, in the chamber tape “Two Shores” there is both, this is truly a classic, somehow undeservedly little-known in us.
Before us is a beautiful, restrained melodrama without wringing hands and sobbing. The main roles of Bollywood stars are Hema Malini and Gitendra. They played well with great success.
Hema is beautiful in the role of serious Artie Sanyal, a girl who became an unwitting prisoner of her past, who, despite the troubles that have happened to her, finds the strength to go on. This role was clearly liked by Hema, in “Two Shores” there is no such coldness and detachment as in many more commercial films of the actress. In addition, in this film, she was able to demonstrate her mastery of the classical style of Bharatanatyam dance. Hema’s heroine dresses in beautiful sarees (new in every scene!), and in the scenes in the hospital, fans can see the actress almost without makeup, she is good without makeup, especially touching and young.
In the role of Inder shone a very young Jitendra, still alive, by the 1980s he somehow died out. He played very well, his Inder is a nice young man, in general very prosperous, a little infantile, but conscientious and sensitive, he did not save himself before a difficult situation and showed a lot of perseverance, tact and patience for Artie and her grief. By drawing the role and thin pencil mustaches, this hero reminded me of the character of the famous Charulotta.
Other actors also played along well, noting Sriram Laga as Uncle Inder somewhat selfish, but wise and understanding. For the first time in the Indian cinema saw billiards, Inder and uncle loved to cut into balls on the veranda of their beach bungalow, just a paradise of bachelors!
Despite many events and experiences in tempo, the film is calm, melancholic in mood, and in general intonation it resembled rather our Soviet cinema than Bollywood, there are no excesses, passions, cinematic maximalism, everything is soft, intelligent. The plot, as often happens in Hindus, is largely karmic, one clings to the other, the story of Artie and Inder rings like a Mobius tape. The first series is a little dry, but the second one is great.
About music: musical numbers are not very much and they are not false attractions, but directly illustrate what is happening. I especially liked the big music scene in the second episode where Artie learns to dance again. Songs absolutely in the classical style here famous composer R. D. Burman proved that he can write a variety of music, and not only rock and roll psychedelia.
Visually, the "Two Shores" also did not pump up - bright colors, beautiful interiors, the sea, walks on the beach in sunset lighting, you can see the ancient Fort Mandu (in the state of Madhya Pradesh) covered with legends of love. Of course, there is a style of the 70s, which are wide claws Jitendra.
Result: “Two Shores” for some reason is not too well-known film in Russia, and in vain, as it is a wonderful film work with a rich karmic history, beautiful acting work and dancing Hema Malini, full of a mood of light sadness with love in half.
