Visual Album by Animal Collective The avant-garde, musical tape, which became the debut in the cinema of little-known director Danny Perez, is a visual album of the group Animal Collective. “Oddsac” is a cross between psychedelic video art and a long music video with elements of mystical horror, with a dark color and an alarming atmosphere. Here you can feel the influence of Nick Zedd, Matthew Barney, movies about vampires category "B". The first half of the film with color flashes and abstract images turned out to be more avant-garde and successful, the second – less modern, in which the director exploits a fairly annoying mystic-vampire theme.
Animal Collective is an American experimental rock band founded in 1999 in Baltimore. It all started with the fact that the company Plexfilm, engaged in the production of independent films, offered to make a documentary about the band. Instead of a documentary, it was an experimental film. The director was Danny Perez, he previously participated in the filming of music videos of the collective. Work on the film began in August 2006, but for various reasons was postponed and ended only after 4 years.
It premiered at the Sundance Festival on January 26, 2010. Many of the songs were inspired by the video. All four members of the rock band starred in the film. David Portner - as a faceless warrior surrounded by fire, Noah Lennox appeared in an unusual, face-covering wig, Brian Weitz (Wytz) - as a knight, Josh Dibb played a vampire. “This thing has no single narrative. Rather, it represents something visual or psychedelic. Some parts of it are more abstract, but there are also more animated by action. - David Portner
In my opinion, the film lacks integrity, compositional unity, although some scenes turned out to be successful. "Oddsac" can hardly be attributed to the masterpieces of experimental cinema, which I include, for example, "Heavenly Tunnels" by Ken Jacobs. In general, the film can be interesting for fans of psychedelic cinema, people who are fond of experimental rock music and, of course, fans of the group Animal Collective.
