Nothing is more important than seeds. Agriculture has entered an era of enormous change. It is under threat, as is the whole world. We need to be able to adapt to these changes, otherwise we will face terrible consequences. Vegetable seeds in the U.S. today make up less than 7% of the diversity they were just 100 years ago. What happens to the seeds and is it possible that the seeds just disappear? If that happens, what will happen to people?
Cary Fowler dedicated his life to preserving the seed gene and creating a world seed bank. He travels around the world, from Peru to Russia, telling and explaining what modification, disease, climate change and our experiments mean for simple seeds. The future of our food is at risk. A huge seed bank is being built in the ice of Norway, the country with the most stringent seed laws. Right next to the Arctic Circle is what Carey calls the “frozen Eden Park.”
If humanity does not change the way of life, does not change the attitude to nature as a whole, it is doomed to extinction, it will not survive.
