The beauty of the unknown I was lucky that I watched this picture on the big screen as part of a competitive documentary program at MIFF 37. There was the director himself, who presented his creation, an unusually charming and intelligent man with a velvet timbre of voice, which does not bother after an hour and a half of listening (the voiceover in the film belongs to the author), and then a discussion took place with the audience of the festival. What a joy after watching such a beautiful picture to express his gratitude and admiration to the director in his face! I even began to stutter with excitement.
This is a very clever, very aesthetically verified picture. The beauty is comparable even to my favorite Microcosmos. This is exactly the kind of documentary film, which in the pursuit of authenticity, for the plausibility of history is not alien to the sophistication of execution. There are very complex, clever paintings, like Looking into Silence, that are exhilarating and soul-grabbing, but which are incredibly boring to watch because of the poverty of the image and the endless repetition of the same dramatic moments. “The Coming” is a kind of intellectual game, a puzzle of being and at the same time a philosophical opus about what we are physically and psychologically, a view from the human side, but from aliens who do not have the same cultural markers and experience; the author proposes to think of a fantastic incident, strain the gyres to the limit and use all your imagination is not an easy task, right? Perhaps that is why this film was not highly appreciated by our audience, but in vain. I have not had such a crazy pleasure from a documentary film that does not tune in to your particular type of thinking, does not suppress, but allows you to enjoy how your own brain begins to work.
