Unshakable truth I haven't believed in a long time. And all the seas, all the marinas. Love, love equally. I want to swim everywhere. Free rook, And God and the Devil. I want to celebrate. When in the white shroud Go to sleep. All the abyss and all the harbors I'm dreaming. Valery Bryusov An ode to heroism. Contradiction of good and evil. Strength and weakness. Peter Berg made a fundamental movie. At its core and the screening of documentary chronicles... both a thriller and a psychological drama were obtained, on the thread of sincerity and on the nerve of strength. Mark Wahlberg is good. And you see John Goodman. The director avoided excessive arrogance, saturation, hyperbolization and theatricality. That slipped in places in the "Deepwater Horizon." Cinema without an aseptic effect. All good. And directing and actors. Level high. I highly recommend it.👍
In the style of presentation ' Patriot Day' more like a documentary setting of events than a feature film. From the very beginning, Peter Berg introduces all the characters whose fates will play a role in the terrorist attack and the capture of criminals. And because of this, the film has a rather long swing.
Also because of this in ' Patriot Day' there is no pronounced protagonist, of course Mark Wahlberg plays a major role, but even his character in all events is a rather secondary figure. In the first place in the film shows the coherence of the work of the special services, the speed with which they solve this problem - and this work is admired. Of course, everything is seasoned with jingoism, but do not take away the fact that American special services conducted the entire operation to identify and capture terrorists at the highest level.
And just in time for the capture of criminals in the film and the climax occurs. And before that, a lot of time is devoted to the victims of the terrorist attack, their tragedy, cohesion, fortitude and indomitability of will - and these moments of the film carry life-affirming force. As a result ' Day of the Patriot' it turned out to be a rather original film, the morality of which is visible to the naked eye.

The Inner History of the Greatest Hunt in the World.
Since 1969, in Massachusetts and Maine, Patriot Day has been celebrated, dedicated to the battles of the American Revolutionary War. One of the symbols of the celebration was the so-called Boston Marathon, in which anyone can take part. In 2013, everything went according to plan, and when the race was over, two explosions occurred with an interval of 12 seconds. There was panic and turmoil. Soon, authorities issued a verdict: in Boston, there was a terrorist attack that killed three people and injured more than 200 others. A little later, the official suspects were announced - they were the ethnic Chechen Tsarnaev brothers. Huge forces were thrown into their search. And it is these events dedicated to the film “Patriot Day”.
A priori "Patriot Day" was supposed to be a rolling hit. We can take into account the fact that the Americans themselves, filled with a spirit of pride for their country since childhood, with enthusiasm and tragedy at the same time had to accept the artistic adaptation of those terrible events. In short, Americans love and respect this movie. Do not forget that the director of “Patriot Day” was Peter Berg, who has long been in good standing, and it was he who shot such famous films as “Treasure of the Amazon”, “In the Rays of Glory” and “Kingdom”, and in the films “Survivor” and “Deepwater Horizon” Berg starred Mark Wahlberg and he also became the main character in “Patriot’s Day” (it remains to add that Berg and Wahlberg are planning several joint projects). Wahlberg was joined by Kevin Bacon, John Goodman, J.K. Simmons and Michelle Monaghan. In general, an excellent cast was selected.
But "Patriot Day" was not a commercial hit, and he did not claim awards at all. What happened is unknown, but the film is really good is difficult to call. First of all, the weakness of the plot is striking. Yes, the writers almost accurately conveyed all the actions that accompanied the terrorist act, but the characters were written very weakly, superficially, they lacked neither depth, nor sharpness, nor drama. Especially in this case, the personalization of the Tsarnaev brothers remains a secret, and the explanations of radical Islamism and hatred of US policy have long been boring. Against the background of the weaknesses of the plot, I would like to highlight a line with Melissa Benoist (plays the wife of one of the Tsarnaevs), here the dramaturgy appeared, but this line was paid too little attention. In general, Berg broke the film into several parallel storylines, but almost no particular interest was not.
Confused and the work of the operator of “Day of the patriot” German Tobias E. Schlissler, who is not the first time cooperates with Peter Berg and, accordingly, with Mark Wahlberg. What a crumpled picture with empty, lifeless flowers and everything was done so academically, as if a student was shooting using a method. Does not catch, does not inspire and does not care about the musical accompaniment in “Day...” from the creative duo of composers Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor, which is very surprising, because these guys are one of the best in their profession. The only consolation was the acting. Mark Wahlberg is generally one of the most stable actors of modern Hollywood and never goes below his bar, so in Patriot Day he showed himself well, at least was more or less convincing, but this is certainly not one of his best roles. About the same words can be attributed to other actors: they did their job with dignity, but they did not give reason to admire them.
Here came some embarrassment: a tragic and relevant theme for the film was selected, the place of the director was taken by the honored representative of his workshop, quality performers were selected and superstar Mark Wahlberg took the main role. It seemed that “Patriot Day” had all the trump cards, but suddenly the picture turned out to be quite average, its quality can even be attributed to television material, so the cold reception in the theatrical box office is quite explainable. You can't help it, but
Director Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg have already worked together several times on the set, such films as "Deepwater Horizon", "Survivor" were shot at a quite good level. These films, as well as the film I want to write about, Patriot Day, are based on real events.
This is not my first review of films based on real facts, real tragedies and personalities who died or sacrificed their lives. I also want to point out that I really like these types of films, I think it’s probably because of the emotional component of these films (or maybe I’m just an emotional person). I am very emotional.
Many facts can be exaggerated, many facts can be simply unsaid. But there is always a chance to search and read information about this event that took place, which I did.
15 April 2013 really was a turning point in the history of Boston, when at the finish of the Boston Marathon two explosions thundered with an interval of 12 seconds. The anger of terrorists knows no bounds, no one can still understand what drives them, or they are just fanatics or they follow their religion, or they follow the instructions of their leader and are ready to die for him, but one thing is clear, such people will be in the worst place after their death.
Cinema could not ignore this tragedy, they love to make patriotic films in the states, well, I think it’s even good, because such films show how strong people can be and how they are ready to unite to confront terrorists, how good and love defeat evil, no one has the right to take people’s lives and no one has the right to judge people except God himself. It is a pity that this film bypassed the Russian cinemas.
Mark Wahlberg is very good at playing ordinary people, workers, policemen, military, even athletes (in the drama The Fighter). I love movies with his participation and the way he gives his roles. "Patriot Day" I will not call him the best work, for me he played normally, at an average level. His character is police officer Ed Davis. Most of all in his work, I remember how he recreated the scene of the explosion according to the indicative evidence in the FBI warehouse. Michel Monaghan, who played his wife, J.K. Simmons and John Goodman really played well, their characters turned out to be very memorable, also the terrorist brothers (Themo Melikidze and Alex Wolfe) and the scene of the interrogation of the wife of one of the terrorists (in this scene, it seems that she can be left without her mother, after the terrorist’s father). Still, Peter Berg in his films lacks a share of drama, a deeper understanding of these events, but in general his picture looks at the proper level, almost everything is recreated on a real level, except for one fact: the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, which at the time of the tragedy was visited by Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, did not give his consent to the filmmakers to shoot scenes of the picture on the university campus.
"Patriot Day" is primarily a film not about tragedy or about terrorists, but about courage, patriotism, love and friendship, about kindness and help!
Ernest Hemingway once said, “The world is a beautiful place and worth fighting for.”
On such a day, everyone has the chance to become a patriot and remain one forever!
"Patriot's Day" is a film, watching which, you understand that the concept of patriotism has its own. Some destroy foreign states, killing and maiming their population, think of themselves as patriots of their states. And others – by bringing order to the streets of their native city and saving their people, helping them to find a new meaning of life, prove by their example that patriotism is not only love and respect for oneself, but also for everyone else, without separation on national, racial, religious and sexual differences.
Let every day be an occasion for showing love for people and understanding that life is an invaluable gift that deserves careful treatment and preservation!

I’ve always wondered why there was so much anger and hatred for patriotic films in the United States. They say, again, they filmed how cool they are, but everything is captured from them. They make movies like that and they do the right thing. Why should they film that they are bad and another country is good? That's stupid. The question is why our filmmakers can’t make a movie like this, at least once a year, so that we can say, ‘Here’s how we really look.’ I would not be ashamed to show such a film in the West to demonstrate its power. No, we have strong, good movies like Fool, Elena, but they all show, maybe the truth, and they show the right things, but there we are presented only in a negative light. Where are the films based on real events about how courageous, kind and ready to hold our neighbor, the people? That's why you're jealous that we don't have them. We did not learn to make patriotic films.
Patriot's Day is a typical representative of an American patriotic film with a cool cast, except for one, but the main detail - it is based on real events that occurred in Boston, in 2013. And that detail in this particular movie fundamentally changes his perception. Because such a film, with a similar plot, with an approximate presentation of the plot (the use of psevodocumental frames), there was an immeasurable amount. But the fact that the film is based on real events and it shows the real fate of people, with real names, photos, fates, warms up the interest of the viewer so much that it is simply impossible to break away. I also want to note the musical design of this picture, and it is better to keep silent about the cast in general.
Usually, in such films, everything interesting happens before the incident, and as the explosion happens, then the action of the film usually slides into a routine and watch boring. I will tell you so, after the very incident, watching the film becomes only more interesting, because there is a detective line, and many side and secondary lines begin to intertwine into a single whole.
I want to give credit to the fact that it is the government, the FBI, the police, who are not shown here as angels who save everyone, instantly find criminals and use only those methods that are allowed. And the main idea of the film is not that America will save and unite everyone, namely love for loved ones and not be indifferent.
In the end, I was pleasantly surprised by “Patriot Day”, as the ratings of this picture for some reason are unusually small and I tuned in to about the same quality of the picture, and in the end got a great thriller that shows the recent story with real people and names and details that you might not know and at the same time convey to the audience the right thoughts.

And I have a question - why this film was not released in Russia? Of course, why should people be reminded what bad terrorists, let them believe in fairy tales, like "Beauty and the Beast."
Peter Berg truly evolves into a venerable director and can not even believe that he filmed this unfortunate and stupid Sea Battle, finally buried the Hollywood career of a good actor Taylor Kitsch. Early in his career, Berg created a charming adventure with the still young Dwayne Johnson The Treasure of the Amazon, later diving into the resting place of the bodies of many young directors who were devoured by this dastardly Hollywood with insane budgets. Hancock was more or less bearable and paid off at the box office, but Sea Battle was completely declassified and received many Golden Raspberry nominations. Apparently, Berg decided not to take on dubious projects, at least for those that are not interesting to him.
Patriot Day is the final part of the trilogy about the heroes of America who defend its freedoms and the freedoms of civilians. It all started with the Survivor, where a group of brave special forces opposed the Taliban and already then Berg showed how his team can work with sound and camera. The operator, who is always on the move, creates an incredible effect of presence and does it in such a way that sometimes it feels like a documentary, not a feature film. That same skill, coupled with the incredible work of the special effects team, passed on to the next film, Deepwater Horizon, which deals with a shocking explosion on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. All of these films, including Patriot Day, have been brought together for some time by Berg’s protégé, Mark Wahlberg. A wonderful artist, who is somewhat mired in the same type of action films and second-rate comedies, in Patriot’s Day plays almost the best part of his party since the Departed. Thank you, of course, makeup artists for the circles under the eyes, but the emotional spectrum of emotions in Mark has always been and has not gone away, the good thing, Peter Berg skillfully uses it. This, of course, is not a solo movie, but a team movie and Wahlberg is just a cog in this mess, just the brightest. We must not forget the ever-fading Bacon and the still-vigorous Goodman, the newly-minted Commissioner Gordon J.K. Simmons and the beauty Michelle Monaghan. All of them create an authentic atmosphere, thanks to great experience and extensive skill.
Patriot Day is as technically flawless as Survivor and Deepwater Horizon. The same twitching camera and presence effect, the same realistic shots and explosions. Berg does not invent a bicycle or build a complex frame, he takes an exact chronology of events and drags it on the screen. From the marathon explosion to the subsequent pursuit and capture of terrorists. And this is not just a dry statement of facts, but a subtle and emotional film about criminals. How weak we are in the face of the threat of terrorism. That you should appreciate what you have, because at any moment you can get rid of a few nails stuffed with explosives. Of course, this film is about law enforcement officers, fearless police officers, one of whom died while catching terrorists. The whole of Boston then rallied around the tragedy and the invisible line between the police and ordinary citizens was simply erased, all the contradictions disappeared in an instant. It’s a trait that is characteristic of the American people — uniting around a single goal, a noble goal, the ability to rally when it’s really needed. These aspects should be thoroughly studied.
The film, of course, was not released in the Russian hire, which in other cases could be equated with a crime before the cultural needs of the people, but the subject still requires a ban on such films.

I didn’t want to write this review, but I did. I’m afraid it’s time I saw the wrong movie.
So, what we have in the prologue: rating, cast (or rather one actor), real history and political engagement.
Politically spicy dish in the cookbook of synemacracy. At first glance, a crazy analogy about a dish, like a simple muscular (or brain) reflection, but cold dishes are served in a volley, or even better in a lump and right down the throat.
This is the simple design of life itself, but not the film. "Patriot Day" is something else.
The film, by the hand, leisurely, for 1.5-2 hours, leads us to the finish line of this marathon, bringing a deadly catharsis. I often ask myself, “Why are these movie moans and torn legs, when there is life itself?”
Today, the connection of events in the soup of subatomic particles is much more understandable and explainable than the motivation of these bombers from the world of pseudo-Islam (I cannot say that terrible word). Unfortunately, the psychology of subjects has a direct correlation between the action they perform and the tool they are studied. Take an ordinary mouse, study its behavior, and then... then find ten differences.
Armed with analogy and common sense, the picture answers this long-standing rhetorical question quite unambiguously. If you, so to speak, called Jerry, then get in the body to Tom.
In the epilogue, we have: rating, cast (or rather one actor), a real story, tragedy, taboo on the phrase “melting pot”, well, political bias.
I deliberately did not name the names of the main characters and the scene, because every time you look or read the news, you, and at this moment too, have a high probability of catching a heavy spoiler on your head.
The film is a patriot’s day, reconstructing the tragedy that occurred on April 15, 2013 at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, which killed three people and injured several hundred more. The bombs were located in such a way (as follows from the film itself, not on purpose) that the explosion dispersed in a wave on the legs of citizens, as a result of which, many remained disabled without legs. But found the strength to continue to live, and many (based on interviews) consider those who laid the bombs messengers of peace who helped unite the people, and look at life from the other side, those who survived.
A few words about the Berg/Wahlberg tandem. Men do not set themselves the goal to make a dramatic and emotional movie, remember the film that survived, which relied only on the operation itself, and its failure, or rather the failure of the US army, its unpreparedness. The characters were not revealed enough that the death of each of them was something like the death of a best friend. They are made of ordinary passers-by, whom we see every day, and whom we do not care. And this is not in any way a minus of the film, but rather a plus, since I repeat, the goal was to recreate the events of that day, to show what a person who wants to survive is capable of, there is no personal drama, there is a general drama, the drama of the squad that no longer exists. This is more emotional than the drama of one. Common grief, so to speak.
So the movie.
In the film Patriot’s Day, the creators decided to follow in the footsteps of their first creation survivor, showing a glimpse of the family, the main characters, and their relationships. But the main part of the film is focused on the tragedy itself, further investigation and capture of criminals. I know little about the events of that day, only that there was a terrorist attack, people died. The film gives a detailed retelling of that day, shows people with their own problems, and how everyone rallied in the face of threat. This is not in any case the propaganda of the majestic forces of the US army, but the story that common grief can unite people. The story is about people, not the country. Even the capture of criminals, served those events that have nothing to do with the investigation, but rather caused by the stupidity of the criminals, and the help of ordinary citizens. Speaking of criminals, they were also depersonalized, you will not know the motives, this is a reconstruction, and not the conclusions of who is to blame and why all this happened. Just a hint, where to go without them.
It makes no sense to talk about the production of the picture in detail, since if you have already watched the films survivor, or the deep-sea horizon, where the production was at the highest level, from the Berg / Wahlberg tandem, you can guess that in this picture, you should not worry about it. And yet I would like to say a few words about emotionality, in this picture it is, in several moments, I would like to highlight the scene with the kidnapping of a car and the further escape of one of the main witnesses. As well as a shootout at the end of the film where pistols and rifles and bombs go into battle. The scene itself is filmed at the highest emotional and technical level.
Actors (Mark Wahlberg, Melissa Benoist, Michelle Monaghan, J.K. Simmons, Kevin Bacon, John Goodman) Everything is in its place, many will say the actors had nothing to play, they are cardboard, boring cardboard, and many will be right, so this is a reconstruction, you can not do without cardboards, but their roles, all played well, appearing for a couple of minutes, not remembering in the future, but squeezing out all the necessary emotions, remembered for those very few minutes.
I would like to highlight the soundtrack, which caught up with the atmosphere of despair at the right moments, and tears where necessary.
It’s hard to talk about the credibility of the film, as it’s an attempt to recreate the events of that day, not a documentary where the announcer with a strict voice says who is to blame and who is right. Attempt counted.
Director Peter Berg seems to have decided to focus entirely on films based on real events. And in each of these works, he invariably shoots Mark Wahlberg. After the military drama “Survivor”, two films have been released, where this tandem takes place – this is, respectively, “Deepwater Horizon” about the terrible environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico and “Patriot Day” – about the terrorist attack during the Boston Marathon, which happened several years ago.
We can say that Berg, they say, goes on a simple path and shoots the same person who will not say no to him, but it is worth noting that the director himself chooses a variety of projects - here the viewer tastes and the drama about the thwarted special operation in the Middle East, and a disaster film, and a movie about terrorists. Wahlberg himself, by the way, also plays different characters - a fighter of an elite squad, a decent family man and a master of his craft, and then a cop, sometimes exceeding his official powers.
If you pay attention to "Patriot Day" - this film is a semi-fiction semi-documentary of the events that occurred in Boston, Massachusetts in April 2013. the preparation of the terrorist attack, the lives of people directly related to it or indirectly, the process of investigation, the capture of criminals - all this is presented not only in the manner of feature films, but also through the prism of journalistic cameras and through eyewitness photos. There is an element of authenticity in Patriots Day. Even the moment of detention of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was hiding in a boat under a tarp, duplicates the real footage of the shooting, because the very position of the boat where he was hiding, and even the clothes in which he was at that time almost completely identical. It's a joy.
Of course, in any film there are differences with reality. I won’t insist, because I didn’t really follow the whole story, but the moment of the Tsarnaevs’ shootout with the police in one of the sleeping areas of Boston – if it really happened in this way – with the use of homemade bombs in large numbers – it’s cool that Berg took everything into account, but if the explosions were from a force of 1-2, then this fact can be attributed to making the film more spectacular.
At the end of the film, there are also documentary footage and interviews of witnesses to the terrorist attack - as can be seen, people continue to live, are surrounded by care and love and try to forget about that terrible day, although serious injuries constantly remind of it. The only thing that captivated the words of one of the respondents, regarding the fact that “do not meddle with us and we will not meddle with others.” Controversial phrase.
The story of Mark Wahlberg and his wife seemed somewhat illogical. It is clear that the film lacked human relations, but to weave into the case of the explosion at a mass event the personal problems of the Sanders family is also somehow strange.
But look at you. I do not impose my opinion on anyone.
Peter Berg took exactly as much - as it was necessary to make a film about the events in Boston in 2013, and at the same time that the director's cap did not fall, to continue his progress on major projects with well-directed action. From the history "Day of the Patriot" the viewer of the new learns almost nothing - has long flown around the world footage from cameras of video recordings, minute-by-minute replay of events and so on.
The director could dig deeper, for example, to dig into the motivations of suspects, to dig a little beyond the physical borders of a free country, but this is likely to be the inspiration of some other enthusiastic director, and at this stage Peter Berg has shot his best work. First, the director, for those who are familiar with the term “Bostonians” very subtly, almost imperceptibly to the Western audience, conveyed the atmosphere of the nominal capital of New England.
Those who once lived in that corner of the planet, the jokes with "Dunkin Donuts" and "Red Sox" will understand. “Dogs” at MIT, a Chinese promoting his app, dialogues between locals and police are all small details of Berg’s understanding of what he’s making a movie about. And then the tragedy itself, and on the day of the oldest Boston Marathon on the planet - and many skeptics almost voiced "Boston vs. Terrorists: Boston wins."
In general, the film conveys the complete authenticity of what is happening, so everyone who sees it through the eyes of the director and witnesses of the events of 2013 will throw a few points. Except for the final shootout between the brothers and the police and the University of Massachusetts campus, which did not allow the studio to shoot scenes of the film in real areas.
As a result, "Patriot Day" is a very high-quality directorial work, here even an abundance of stars could not knock out Berg's enthusiasm to shoot this film. Even before the filming of this film had some fears about the success of the project, but watching the film was pleasantly surprised.

April 15, 2013 was truly a turning point in the history of the United States of America. A senseless and shocking tragedy that took the lives of four people and disabled dozens of others. The day when the Day of Patriots fully justified its name. Avoiding such an important tragedy in American history would be cool. Thus, it served as the basis for the next biographical film directed by Peter Berg.
Frankly speaking, I expected much more from this film director Peter Berg. And having such a strong material, it would be safe to shoot a truly strong dramatic film that would collect all conceivable and unthinkable cinematic awards. However, in my opinion, Peter Berg failed to realize the full potential of the project.
The main problem of the picture is based on absolutely uneven dynamics, torn editing and heterogeneous directing Peter Berg. When scenes designed to touch the viewer to the depths of his soul and touch the living, alternate meaningless pathos of speeches and moments, and sometimes so completely depict the romantic and measured life of other people in other parts of the city. Not only does it not give the impression of the unity of the inhabitants of the city of Boston, which was in fact and which is spoken of in the film, but ultimately resonates with the general impression of what he saw.
There is a lack of directorial skill and strength to director Peter Berg and how to endow individual scenes with deep drama. If we were to make a film, say Michael Bay, he would find a great clue to touch patriotism and some drama. However, this film directed by Peter Berg is generally quite dry. It would seem that in the picture everything is kept in its place. There's drama, there's spectacle and everything else, but it's all shown fairly impartially, not emotionally and too sterilely. Not allowing you to see in the picture the soul that, say, was felt in the previous film of the director in “Deepwater Horizon”.
In the rest, to say about the picture that either frankly bad does not want and does not make sense. The plot of the picture quite accurately and in detail recreates on the screen a retrospective of the events that occurred in April 2013 in Boston. Let in some places fouling and bringing to the story of fiction writers, but in general - trying to create a very voluminous dramatic canvas on the screen. Where, having introduced a dozen characters into active status, the creators of the tape tried to reveal each of them and his role in the story with a special passion.
Michelle Monaghan, J.K. Simmons, Kevin Bacon, John Goodman and many others played really well. Complementing each other with their play and not trying to draw all the attention to themselves personally. A little disappointed Mark Wahlberg, who on mine frankly did not finish his role. It was like playing it under duress. Hence, it is not surprising that in the image of Wahlberg looked rather unsure. Completely dissolved in her role Melissa Benoist, who proved to all the haters of “Supergirl”, that is not a talentless actress. Temo Melikidze and Alex Wolfe looked very confident and authentic in the images of the brothers of terrorists who terrorized the city for 4 days.

Patriot Day is a retrospective of the tragic events of April 15, 2013. When several explosions in the Boston Marathon caught the attention of the world. It turned out not bad enough, but not the most outstanding and sterile film, which clearly lacked emotional and dramatic depth, as well as some soulfulness. Hence, it is not surprising that the picture when watching the tape does not cause sympathy and does not catch. With that kind of material, I could have done more.
Having all the prerequisites to create a strong drama about the recent tragedy, the creators nevertheless slid into a template and faceless narrative, instead of which it would be better to look at the archive of real information releases about what happened.
The main character, police officer Ed, we are presented immediately. Such an ordinary American cop, who for some sins in office to keep away from high positions despite his courage and ingenuity. Typical action situation. I have no complaints about him in general, what was supposed to be Wahlberg played as it should, the image will not be remembered, but he did not cause negative things during the film. A police officer with a good reaction.
All acquaintance with the other characters before the explosion is presented to us in the best traditions of the film almanac of stories and quite poor quality. Each is given a couple of minutes and acquaintance with sympathy for the characters does not work, just do not have time to get acquainted with them and in fact they do not differ from other strangers.
The contrast of feelings doesn't work. It is clear that people do not know about the future tragedy, but why is there no atmosphere of carefree rest before the incident? Everything is crumpled and confused, in the form of a documentary rather than a feature film, and looks like a report: some went, others ran, I did not feel the mood with which people came to this place.
Next, the moment of the explosion. It is as realistic as possible and it becomes difficult to watch. We managed to cope with this, familiar heroes meet, but again, everything looks like a TV report without any censorship. The suffering of people you empathize with because you are a human being and not without a sense of pity, but the director did not make them close and familiar to you, so that your empathy throughout the film and interest in the fate of the victims of the tragedy only intensified.
The investigation did not cause any emotions, the routine in its pure form. I will not disclose the details, but I will say that nothing could surprise me in it.
I often notice that dramas filmed about real tragedies are not welcome to criticize and a positive review is perceived as a tribute to the victims. Especially ' such a look is a cover ' very much loved by directors and producers of such films. I totally disagree with that. To such a movie, personally, I always make high demands than to fiction, as to make a low-quality film based on real events is a major disrespect to their participants. Yes, during the film, I was inclined to the fact that the authors wanted to make the film as close as possible to the documentary form, but what prevented them from showing the characters in more detail, revealing the characters, and making the film itself more interesting? Replace the situation and there is nothing to change, the film seemed to be made according to a certain pattern, which does not cause any return of feelings.
The result was a cardboard drama. Which tries to look good, with the help of musical accompaniment, realism of some moments and similar techniques. But it didn't work. ' Patriot's Day' an empty movie that doesn't elicit the expected emotions. It is better to look at the chronicle of those days, and it is more useful and will be something to think about.
The first reports on the box office in the United States and Canada of the film "Patriot Day" can not please. After the failure of "Deepwater Horizon" tandem Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg could not but hope for rehabilitation in the form of a new project. The events described in the film are still quite fresh in memory: the Boston Marathon, two explosions, the Tsarnaev brothers accused of conspiring with criminals to obstruct justice two Kazakhstanis, a real mini-war with bombs against police officers.
It is reported that the film can have serious problems with payback, despite a small budget. What's the reason? Perhaps Americans are not so interested in a movie about what happened only three years ago. The memory is still fresh and the pain is still there. Of course, "Patriot Day" is a tribute to the memory of the dead and victims, but this is just an imitation of what happened. It is worth considering whether the film was rushed out.
Peter Berg gives a two-hour report from the scene. Dry, with a cold bluish tint, dispassionate. Momentarily arranging the course of events and introducing more new characters each time, the director thoroughly reconstructs the terrible tragedy on the day of the marathon race. The stars of the film (J.K. Simmons and Melissa Benoist again in the same project and again not together in the frame) pick up the appropriate range and try to show their characters, rather, real people.
In other words, they are not remembered for some special game to praise them from all sides. It should be noted editors, gathered the story from a huge pile of shots. The atmosphere of chaos and loss does not have a slow pace, so do not wait in the plot for explanations of the motive of the terrorists or unnecessary details about the personal lives of police officers. Just looking for suspects. It is worth paying attention to how quickly the special services for processing primary data worked.
Realizing how important it is not to waste valuable time, the employees of the security services clinged to the search for the right people in the crowd through the viewing of numerous videos. I’ve always loved how Americans (at least in the movies) move quickly from shock to action. The cooler sounds a great soundtrack, which vaguely resembled the duet Reznor-Ross. What a surprise to see these names in the credits! Melodies of agonizing anticipation created paranoia.
Paranoia and tension. Concern for each of the following minutes. The class rises higher when the hiding brothers start throwing homemade bombs at the police. It was shown so realistically. That is, ordinary cops were unable to neutralize the troublemakers of Boston at once, and it was like reality, not a movie. Americans are vulnerable and can be seriously injured, the subtext reads. American security is just an illusion that people believe in.
I think because of the dispassionate presentation of material, the plot lacks emotional support. Just a chronicle with traditional photos and frames at the very end, explaining a particular moment. Characters blur in the eyes, a lot of shots create an ugly reality in which people live, the plot does not leave fire after familiarization. Probably, someone will like “Patriot’s Day”, but it is unlikely to stir the soul and make even cry. It wasn't useful for that. It happens.
“The most beautiful is in the depths of the soul.”
The head of our main character was well emphasized. In my narrow sense, the U.S. is like that cop played by Mark Wahlberg. From afar you can see the full scale of greatness with which they awarded themselves, the same manners and clumsy jokes. This is the facade, they are vulnerable to terror and the senselessness of terrorist attacks, as we all are, but they know how to blindly love their country, they are devoted to their ideals, patriots who do not ask the right questions and they sleep magnificently at night.
This year I will be very surprised if our blonde academy does not hand over a statuette, two, to this film. Everything is in the best tradition of annual praise by American critics. But I would like to note that it will be more insulting than ever if they forget about the “Fences” and “Queen Katwe” – Denzel, Viola and Lupita are great people; and I am silent about “Moonlight” in general, there are great pictures this year, the fight will be worthy of our attention!
Well, that's not what the film is about, although why not -- we've been shown again how united Americans can be, they're true patriots, but they need to continue to fight racism within themselves, this rot is still in the blood of many, all over the world. And terror doesn't care what you look like, whether you're a Muslim or a Jew, they'll do their dirty work convinced that heaven will open the door for them.
Can I recommend the movie to watch? More like it than not. But most likely, to re-watch you will not return, and seeing on TV, almost sure that switch to another channel.
