Schwarzenegger today is not ... In order to come up with a suitable title for my review of Go North ("To the North), I had to remember why I wanted to see this movie in the first place. Oh, yeah! The fact that I was attracted by the name Schwarzenegger in the list of actors. Even more curious was the fact that this is not an old (already in every sense of the word) kind (and not very) Terminator, but the offspring of a world-famous bodybuilder, actor and politician. Terminator Jr. turned out to be good with himself (in real life he does not hesitate to work as a model). Dad's to become and brutality in it are present (height, like his father - for 180 cm), however, along with the fashionable now and, unfortunately, inherent in many persons (like) male metrosexuality and lusciousness. Do not pay attention to the fact that the young man in the list of actors takes first place. In fact, he was given a supporting role. Perhaps in vain, as his work seemed convincing enough. Who knows, maybe someday we will see Patrick Arnold Schwarzenegger in more box office tapes.
Perhaps this is the main point that deserves attention when it comes to x/f "To the North". Almost everything (well, almost everything else) deserves only negative comments. However, everything in order.
The plot of the film is hardly original. A post-apocalyptic world (does that surprise anyone now?), a small community of teenagers between the ages of a few and 20. Moreover, the plot can be safely called underdeveloped, because the life of the heroes and the nature of their activities are not quite clear. All that is known is that they go to a “school” where they are taught by 20-year-old “teachers,” while the other few 20-year-olds act as supervisors and try to grow something to feed themselves in the cold season. It is impossible to immediately understand where all the adults went. Only in the course of the film, it is casually mentioned that a certain disease decimated all representatives of the older generation. In a “strict security educational institution”, as in the community itself, there are several rules. The most brutal of these is the expulsion of “school children” from the community if he/she did not show up for class after three bells. The main character of the tape, Josh, is relatively suddenly bored with this order of things and he decides to go in search of his parents. His path lies in the north of the country. But he does not want to do it alone and takes one of the girls of the community with him as a companion. It is curious that flashbacks appearing in the guy’s head, try to give the viewer an understanding of what happened, both in the country and with his family. But, 1-2 episodes were clearly not enough to give the viewer the answer to this question. The fact that the fugitive is the sister of one of the guys-guards and he and his friends go in search of her does not greatly increase the intrigue and lookability of the movie. At times, the inconclusive play of actors, the shortcomings of costumers and screenwriters also cannot contribute to the growth of interest among viewers. Curiously, almost at the very end of the film, in me, like an old liquor, the desire to “continue the banquet”, when the main characters, albeit overtaken by their pursuers, seem to get to their destination and notice a group of people who are clearly “over 30”. But then I was disappointed, because the film came to an end, and the ending remained somewhat open. Maybe I should have turned off the movie from the beginning. After all, the boy Josh in the very debut of the film tried to warn that everything will be very blurry and incomprehensible: “Don’t ask me what happened.” ("Don't ask me what happened.)
It’s hard to say why this movie was boring and boring. Several factors may have influenced this. Perhaps one of the main reasons for this is cheapness. I do not know the amount of the budget of the x/f "To the North", but I am convinced that it is small and rather does not exceed 1 million dollars. This is evidenced by an almost complete lack of special effects. More than once or twice with the naked eye, not very high-quality computer graphics are visible. This is especially striking when the main characters of the picture rest on the highway blocked by cars - these cars are not there, they are only painted and very, very poor quality. The dialogues of the heroes are short and insignificant. The main actors and extras are the minimum number. While watching, I often felt lonely. It was like someone had to be in the frame, but probably the money was running out, and not all the scenes were filmed. If you look a little funny, it seems that the scene, captured at 01:18:30, required the largest financial investments. The work of a professional florist is not cheap!
Over. I wouldn’t recommend this movie to anyone. Claimed "thriller" and "adventure" in this film are not found. A little "drama" and a timid attempt at "melodrama," maybe. Especially disappointed fans of the post-apocalyptic genre and fans of the franchise about the Walking Dead. What zombies, comrades? The budget of the film was barely enough for one old Lincoln. Perhaps someone will want to draw a parallel between this “masterpiece” and the work of W. Golding “Lord of the Flies”. Maybe. But then, it only strengthens the negative impressions of viewing, because in the novel the classic thriller and drama is in abundance!
