The past comes alive in the present When I see an old house in front of me, I realize that I have a history with it. Imagination can make up anything: you can imagine that there were terrible mystical rites, or in these corridors wandered some maniac in the style of Michael Myers. That’s why I’ve always been interested in movies on this topic. But “Son of the Devil” was not as scary as it could be. The story seemed promising.
The film follows Liam and Ray, a happy married couple who embark on a journey and decide to stay in a guest house with a long history. The hostess is in a hurry to receive guests and his radiant smile kills absolutely all fears. But soon Ray begins to torment seizures, which is why staying in the guest house becomes an agony.
A more detailed investigation leads to the discovery that the house once housed a clinic where pregnant girls were admitted and there was a lot of pain, suffering and agony. The owners of the hospital were not particularly kind, which means that all the walls of the house were directly saturated with negative energy. Now Liam and Ray have to decide what to do - run away, or vice versa, stay and reveal all the secrets of the damn guest house.
Again, as with most current horror movies, "Son of the Devil" boasts only a fascinating idea and nothing more. When the implementation began, the film fell just a whole heap of various problems, ranging from sluggish, uninteresting directing, and ending with completely uninteresting actors who may have been good in other films and TV series, but in “Son of the devil” they are not surprising.
The film is particularly disappointing because it is far from the worst director, Michael Lensky, who in the past shot “Uninfant Age” and had a hand in “The Artist-Thief”. He is excellent at dramas and comedies, but he did not manage to play well in horrors. The whole movie is an excruciatingly long time. It is full of promising plot plotting, but it all comes down to such banal disclosures that in the finale you just feel that you are wasting time. And a precious hour and a half will not return you, be careful!
My bottom line: “Son of the Devil” turned out to be the film that does not understand what can hook. He is fearless, allegedly repulsive moments turned out not sharp enough, the actors look tired, and the director seems to care what he shoots. This is the story and it’s hard to say who it will inspire.
