A very good title for the film: the atmosphere of the holiday, which is always nearby. But it's not always your holiday. And for most of the inhabitants of a neat roadside hotel with a "holiday" name will never "own" and will remain a "project" of another - a better life.
A good manager, sincerely trying to maintain a balance of interests between the "stayed", not very solvent guests, and the economy of the hotel business.
Sweet, left to themselves children who are adapted to the world around them and enjoy life, entertaining themselves as they can. And their pranks "on the edge" in themselves do not yet carry the aggression that adults read. Especially against the background of that type of children's laughter, which is well known to all parents of minors and can not but irritate strangers.
I don't care about the new guests' car from the second floor - it's so much fun! Then, being caught, washing the same car is also fun!
A young mother who seems to be able to be both a forager, and a protector, and a friend, and the eternal Santa Claus for her six-year-old Pippi Long Stocking. Not able only to be an “adult” herself, to learn to communicate with the outside world not as a puberty teenager, and at the same time already explain to her beloved child “what is good and what is bad.”
Life is full of such stories. And it is extremely difficult to determine where the “guilt” and where the “trouble” of a person who does not manage to steer out of the “project” into a more or less worthy reality. Especially when he is almost a child.
And it is always surprising both in life and in the cinema, how people easily, quickly, unconditionally, without explaining anything, abandon those with whom they were close yesterday. When one of the storylines suddenly leads to devastating consequences (which in principle should not have been) just because people did not explain themselves in essence. And the “abandoned” side simply does not know how, and does not know other ways to influence the situation except through the usual aggression. And not because he is not ready to accept it, but because he does not understand "for what?"
And now what happens is happening. . .
Here's a real Disney World with tough living conditions, kids' constant fun, deceptions and forced elements to exist. The picture is quite unusual. Director Sean Baker showed the world his magical kingdom. Bright colors of the film create a direct solar perception, only behind the impeccable palette hide the complex fate of guests.
The story is told on behalf of a six-year-old girl whose behavior leaves much to be desired. The constant variety of boring life at least somehow entertain the girl, and the behavior of a phlegmatic mother raises the level of children's amusements to dangerous acts, rude swearing and illegal actions. In fact, Sean Baker has hit the scourge of Florida society – people trying to make ends meet, borrow money, sell cheap perfume near major hotels, sell valuables, eat something. Behind all these lies the problem of ignorance, which lowers the adult generation to the social bottom.
The more annoying and hooligan acts committed by children, the more the plot shows the characters. Motel manager Willem Defoe is the most interesting and adequate person. Strict but fair, it reflects public opinion of everything that happens. For the actions of children, for the delay in payment of the room, for the scandals of neighbors, he is ready to go to extreme measures, but when it comes to the safety of children from strangers, then no matter how annoying and mischievous they are, Defoe will stand with his chest for the babies.
Film style and measured narrative creates a certain atmosphere. This is due to bright colors, and shooting 35-millimeter film, and the seeming inability to fix anything. The plot drives the heroine’s mother into dangerous machinations to get a livelihood, while the girl with her neighbors are constantly involved in various stories. The picture also reflects adult problems through the eyes of a child to add naivety and brighten up the canvas of survival.
The tape brings to condition the actions of unbred children, giving rise to public danger, which is clearly represented by the upbringing of the mother. More specifically, lack of education. Heroes do not make grandiose plans, live here and now: there is a roof over their heads, they got some food - the day was not in vain. We are approaching the edge of earning very thinly. It is clear that such a life will not bring anything good for a child, but adult quarrels, responsibility for the behavior of children, the consequences of communicating with curious peers - everything is projected on the older generation, and the sanctions of mothers are so incomprehensible to children.
Overall, Project Florida perfectly captures the hardships of life, exposes the problems of society, and naively embellishes the ways in which a young girl can earn money. The tape does not justify actions, but, on the contrary, brings protection and common sense into the behavior of adults, but how to explain the law to a child? Avoiding problems and showing Disney World in front of the credits so easily show that the children did not want to grow up, but suddenly they became older by several years.
Movies about childhood have always stood apart in the world of cinema. But it is even more interesting to watch movies about adulthood through the eyes of a child. The interest is due to how subtly you can notice those problems of adults that they are used to noticing. At the same time, the authors do not forget to show how these problems can adversely affect children. One example of such films is the American tragicomedy Project Florida.
6-year-old Mooney lives with the same young mother in a backwater motel, where all marginalized and representatives of the lower social strata who are trying to hide from the outside world come. She is not well-mannered, bully and just a bully. But Mooney is developed beyond her years and always knows how to stand up for herself. Her usual daily routine consists of walking with neighbors’ children in the neighborhood, small thefts from passers-by and some hooliganism. Meanwhile, her mother struggles to make ends meet, trying to make some money sometimes in ways that are not entirely legal.
The film catches its unusual cast. The fact is that of all the stars, only Willem Dafoe is a full-fledged here as the manager of the Bobby Motel, a man who fatherly cares for all his guests. It is also possible to note Brooklyn Prince in the role of Mooney, a 6-year-old bully, who, on the one hand, may seem a faint-hearted child, and on the other, a developed girl who has had many troubles. Plus, we can single out Bria Vinite as Hayley, a troubled mother who is just beginning to realize what a mistake she made since her life.
Director Sean Baker is considered one of the most prominent American independent filmmakers of our time. In the case of “Project Florida”, he turned into a multi-layered psychological drama that combines childlike spontaneity and the heavy burden of adult truth. And the director presents it in this manner, as if purposefully trying to avoid the traditional narrative, just catching the eye of a continuous flow of information. It is remarkable how the director to some extent contrasts Mooney and Haley, who seem to be similar, but at the same time are very different from each other, and if nothing remains human in Haley, then Mooney has yet to preserve this humanity.
In fact, the film lacks as such a coherent plot, i.e. the entire plot canvas of the picture is a continuous set of incoherent episodes from the lives of Mooney and Haley. Haley is a classic unsatisfactory mother who gave birth to a child as a teenager, and now makes ends meet, working part time as a stripper, then selling counterfeit perfume. All of these problems are a far cry from the ill-bred Mooney, who staggers through the streets with the neighbors’ children, mothers random passers-by, spits at their cars or robs naive onlookers. To some extent, Mooney is a 6-year-old anti-heroine, whose correction is taken by the caring manager of the Bobby Motel, despite the fact that he himself is full of personal and work problems. Of course, this whole story could end amicably, but, given the situation, you should not count on a happy ending.
In general, “Project Florida” is a good movie, in the style of storytelling vaguely reminiscent of “Boyhood”. The film can be distracting due to the lack of a coherent plot as such, as well as the romanticization of a marginal environment. In any case, it feels confident that this is an independent film, so I recommend it for viewing.
The uncle in this room is often arrested, and the aunt in this room thinks her husband is Christ.
Six-year-old bully Mooney lives with her unlucky mother Hailey in a local California motel full of poor people. Hot summers, new friends and mischievous games - the magical world of childhood, which can not be overshadowed by endless scandals with neighbors, nor the constant lack of money. Cover small pranks children often have a good guy and part-time manager of the motel Bobby. However, if he manages to reason with the children, then this does not mean that he will listen to the outcast mother Hayley.
Director Sean Baker once again acts in the genre of drama with elements of humor and uses as heroes representatives of the social bottom. And if last time it was black transgender prostitutes, this time it's more casual and less shocking. However, this does not mean that the world of the poor will be too rosy – just this time the author demonstrates the contrast between the dirty world of adults and the simpler world of children. Baker does not change himself in terms of submission, since everything that happens has almost documentary realism due to the manner of shooting and really the existing motel during the creation of the tape.
The film's leisurely narrative aims to explore the world from the perspective of a child who is having fun even among a bedbug packed with drug addicts and prostitutes. Mooney grows up like a wild weed, because mothers like her are judged. But the girl can really be called happy. Mooney doesn’t have a normal home, money, good toys, and the hope of going to a decent school, but she has a yard, games with the neighbors, free tasty waffles from a familiar aunt from a cafe, and a lightheartedness that her mother is still able to somehow maintain. The author successfully plays on an unusual contrast, where there is a bright picture with children's laughter and grimness taken out of the parentheses of the narrative, which will undoubtedly overtake the heroes.
“Project Florida” is an acutely social drama about poverty, laziness and hopelessness. Without a clear plot line, the film manages to fascinate the atmosphere and suggest a lot of eternal reflections on the role of childhood, parents and habitat. There is a lot of slowness, naivety, simple human stupidity, but if you are seriously interested in author's cinema, then you should not pass by.

Six-year-old Mooney lives in a Florida hotel. While her dysfunctional mother is trying to find money to pay for the room, the girl spends all day hanging around with the neighbors’ children and arranges problems for everyone around her. At the same time, the hotel manager is patient with his tenants.
Only now has I gotten to this controversial indie project from last year with a critical rating of 96%. The film was filmed. Wrote, directed and edited by Sean Baker. Bria Vinite – the girl’s mother was found for the role through Instagram, and the hotel manager is played by Willem Dafoe.
The Florida Project is not a simple story. Cinema is in no hurry with the narrative, making it clear that this is how the weekdays of an unemployed single mother go. Together with this and bright colors (referring to your almost carefree childhood), you begin to worry about the main characters on the one hand, get very angry, and get angry for various reasons.
Many write that the high rating of critics is associated with the big problem of disadvantaged families in America, but it is strange to project this on only one country when street children can be found anywhere.
A film about a carefree, naive and immaculate kingdom called ' Childhood' and how this kingdom faces a cynical and ruthless adult world, a world of vice. The picture is replete with all sorts of shades and tones of light, soft colors, especially pink. Fairy colors soothe and hypnotize, return you to your own childhood, a world without worries, experiences and long-term plans, where there is only ' here and now' The end of the film reminds us that all good things come to an end, the person inevitably grows up, and childhood goes away. However, the young heroines of the film do not want to put up with this fact. They run away, run towards a fairy tale, trying to deceive the laws of nature and escape from the clutches of the adult world that overtakes them.
Many may be frightened away by the frank details of the lives of America’s marginalized, prostitutes, and poor. But the image of these details is necessary to contrast the world of children and the world of adults, to compare them. The actions of adults in this film are not distinguished by decency and morality, and in this sense they are like their children. The only difference is that adults understand responsibility for these actions (which, however, does not prevent them from doing them), and children do not. Perhaps it is the child that sits in the soul of each of us that makes adults neglect their decency, rebel against circumstances. The film tells about this: the nature of childhood and its place in our lives. In each of us sits a shkodliy child and waits for the moment when he manages to escape. All we have to do is release this child.
It is quite difficult for low-budget and author films in our time to achieve world recognition, unless the subject of a particular picture does not affect the infringement of the rights of minorities on racial, gender or does not concern discrimination against sexual minorities. Films of life, affecting the everyday life of that part of the world's population, which everyone does not care and even less. However, in 2017, one film made a splash at major film festivals from Sundance to Cannes. The duo of director Sean Baker and screenwriter Chris Bergoch presented to the public their next work called 'Project Florida'.
The plot of the film tells about the summer everyday life of children from the lower strata of the population living in a cheap motel near Disney World and their relationship with parents, surrounding and the hotel manager, patient with the antics of both children and their parents.
'Project Florida', without having any clear storyline, immerses the viewer in the atmospheric setting of everyday life of the so-called ' white garbage'. The girl Mooney runs around with friends in the neighborhood in search of adventures while misadventures occur with their parents in such an unknown adult world. And the artistic composition of the picture perfectly conveys the difference between the bright colors of the facades against the background of summer everyday life and the internal dilapidated rooms and lives of the heroes. And somewhere in the middle is a very human but system-dependent manager, played by William Defoe, who watches as one guest succeeds another and, knowing their fate in advance, can do nothing to help them. All he can do is keep the motel working, correcting small household errors of a defective and incense-breathing shelter for hopeless people. After all, they are all kept afloat in the ocean of the harsh capitalist system as they can. But, Mooney does not see this - the childhood and beautiful that allows you to stay in the world of fantasies and carefree life, but one way or another, adult reality will touch it, no matter how the surrounding adults do not try to protect the child. From bright colors to matte despondency, the picture balances on a thin edge
In contrast, wrapping the anthem of innocent youth with a social drama with a strong emotional message and being one of the best works that can be as close to the audience as possible.
Pros: Plot, production, artwork, unprofessional, but perfectly selected cast.
Cons: perhaps the dynamics will seem inert, but this does not prevent to captivate the viewer
'Project Florida' - that was the name of the future 'Walt Disney World Recreation Center' probably the dream of children from all over the world. Over time 'Project Florida' became a household expression, denoting the exact opposite of pastime to the place where the most famous children's park unfolded. This means a sad place where there is no place for dreams, fun and joy, these are gray, dull everyday life, disposing to depression, stress, mental disorders. Almost 'Project Florida' is a ghetto in its worst manifestations of modernity. By the way, the filming of the film of the same name took place just near the ' Walt Disney World Recreation Center' but except for rare manifestations of sunlight, nothing reminds of a carefree life near bright Orlando, which is located in Florida, a place where many so want to get and dream about it. . .
In a hotel for a long stay, something remotely reminiscent of our hostels, a six-year-old girl named Mooney grows up. She is raised by Holly's mother alone. Although ' nurturing' - this is loudly said, because most often Mooney is left to herself. She is petty hooligan with other children, cozying up with visitors in the park, to lure them a handful of small things and buy sweets for this. But, nevertheless, Mooney, as befits young children, sees nothing wrong in this and she is happy and unconditionally loves her mother. By the way, Holly responds in kind, but something from the start told her it would end badly. Far from respectability, a place where we shelter drug addicts, prostitutes and criminals. Past, present and future of all residents of this ' dormitory ' hazy and does not bode well. The oppressive atmosphere literally consumes you and you sink into this abyss every day, falling lower and lower. . .
Yes, here are such sad and not the most pleasant words deserves a place called 'Project Florida'. The film was directed by Sean Baker and was warmly received at a number of film festivals for independent and low-budget cinema. At the same time 'Project Florida' collected a heap of awards and nominations. Most of them deserved Willem Dafoe - the guest star of the film. He, by the way, achieved the fact that his name was named in the shortlist for nominees for ' Oscar' in the category ' Best Supporting Actor' But, let’s be honest and say that the deserved Dafoe had little chance of winning, Sam Rockwell for his role in the tape ' Three Billboards on the border of Ebbing, Missouri' was the sole favorite. Admittedly, while I watched 'Project Florida' already knowing that Willem Dafoe's performance was so highly appreciated, I expected something special. But that never happened. In addition, I can name several films where Dafoe looked much stronger, but he was not even awarded a mention in any film competitions.
It is possible that Willem Dafoe has earned such attention for his role as a hotel keeper for the poor with his truthfulness. Probably even with bitter truth. He is practically the only person, other than children, who has preserved his human appearance in this sticky, swampy place. He was the only one who wanted everyone to finally get out of here and find their place in the scorching Florida sun. But he himself knew perfectly well that those who would end their lives in some ditch from an overdose are hundreds of times more than those who will be able to realize the dream of becoming a recognized member of society. In sincerity, truthfulness, honesty picture 'Project Florida' her salt, her bitterness and her pain. Admittedly, the personification of hundreds ' fallen' is Mooney’s mother, played by Lithuanian-born actress Bria Vinaite. It is as evil, as despondency, as moral and physical fall. Mooney herself is a kind angel, a little child who meets every day with a smile. And the hero Willem Dafoe is a guide, he stands between evil and good. He only wants the best for everyone, but he has long accepted the fact that evil often wins here and it is impossible to do anything about it. . .
I cannot say that the film made a strong impression on me, but in the meantime, forget the general surroundings ' The Florida Project' impossible. Most likely, the film alienated me somewhat by the fact that it turned out to be too realistic, too vital, too truthful, and at the same time very topical, frightening and unpleasant. In addition, we have not released the film in the official release, so it can only be found with an amateur translation, which is replete with masturbation. It is possible that this translation is the closest to the original and this again emphasizes the truthfulness ' Project Florida', but even this I can not record in the pluses of the film.
5 out of 10
P.S. But Mooney's heartfelt tears I will never forget. As Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky said: ' The happiness of the whole world is not worth one tear on the cheek of an innocent child'
It is more difficult to write a negative review than a positive one. However, my review is neutral, as is the film, which is not bad or good, it is not. Watching it was not that boring, but all the time you are waiting, now, now something will happen, some twist of the plot, but nothing happens.
' Project Florida' these are sketches from the life of a girl Mooney and her unlucky mother, whose life takes place in a lousy hotel.
In the film, we see the world of the girl, her simple, but in some places not harmless fun with other children living in the hotel (spitting other people's cars, climbing abandoned houses, eating ice cream alone). As well as pastime with the mother, not at all burdened by the educational part.
Haley's mother, whose life is making money, often through illegal means, watching TV, parties, and a daughter. She loves her daughter as much as she can. And the hotel manager, a kind of good uncle, personifying a positive hero and partly paternalistically related to Hayley and Mooney and closing many eyes in relation to the first.
I understand the director wanted to show us the life of certain segments of the population and childhood in itself and in a particular environment. But I'm sorry, neither is a revelation. Childhood is beautiful, and it is natural that even for Mooney there is a place for joy and magic.
The ending of the film is quite logical and predictable. But that's not the task. Despite the tragedy of the moment, absolutely did not touch. What could be worse than separating mother and child? For a child of this age, the mother is the whole world, the main person in life, whom you try to imitate (which Mooney does), to correspond, even if there is nothing to correspond there. You don’t judge from a position bad or good, the mother is the mother that the child loves a priori. But mentally you understand that in the future such a lifestyle will not bring the girl anything good. Sooner or later her fun will cease to be so harmless (though remember the instigated burning of the house) and she will most likely grow into a copy of her mother. So it's up to everyone to decide what's better, what's worse.
To be honest, I do not know who and for what purpose I would recommend to see 'Project Florida'.
So 5 out of 10. To the final.
P.S. The children of the infidel had fun during filming.
This story is a kind of appeal to the fact that no matter how luxurious carelessness and frivolity, it has its expiration date.
It is difficult to say that this film is purely about children's fun in the period of distance from parental eyes, it is more about education on the example of poor parents with the manners of teenage outbursts, where the character from a young age, being captivated by complete looseness, began to look like a criminal, thereby pushing himself beyond the scum of society.
And yet, thanks to the acute social theme of parental care and child vandalism, through the ironic and vulgar structure of the story, it appears in the form of a moral lesson, where behind the antics of the child's mind due to its age and lack of parental gaze lies the truth of life about the possible future, today you flaunt without any shackles, and tomorrow your past will take on you the entire weight of your actions.
Without an excellent cast, this story would look a little pale, despite the fact that it would have found its application in any way against the background of other similar stories, but thanks to the friendly attitude of Willem Dafoe to all the guests of a cheap motel, the immoral and hooligan behavior of the mother of a young girl, and the girl Mooney herself, who simply wanted to spend her childhood as she wants – This story flashes through in one breath, and even if in the dialogues swear words often pop up, and the actions resemble complete recklessness, in the finale, you go to the right way of life, if you try to make this life so.
Childhood is such a thing when all your actions go for pranks, much sadder when as an adult you think that all this can still be attributed to pranks.
Project Florida 39 tells the story of a young woman living with her 6-year-old child in a cheap motel near Disneyland. A dark past and sloppiness prevent the heroine from finding a decent job that would allow her to pay for a room and support her family, so she is forced to come up with various ways to earn money, sometimes violating the law. Her daughter Mooney is still too young to realize the unattractiveness and futility of such an existence, so she is happy, spending her free time with the neighboring children in idle wandering around the neighborhood and doing everything that comes to her mind. The manager of the motel performed by Willem Dafoe sympathizes with his guests and, as far as possible, tries to help them get out of various troubles in which they regularly get.
The film is shot in a very bright acid-purple range, designed to help convey the mood of childhood, when everything around seems surprisingly beautiful and magical. It is about childhood, his carelessness and naivety that this film was made. However, it is a very sad movie, showing the difficult lives of the lower strata of American society, in sharp contrast to the expensive amusement park in which successful fellow citizens relax with their children. Empathize with the main character is not easy, she behaves rudely, recklessly and sometimes even vile. Although there is no doubt about her love for her daughter, the benefits of this ' care' clearly not enough.
The narrative in the picture is deliberately unhurried, measured, like the lives of the main characters, little different from day to day. But through this routine and grayness, the director managed to convey the characters’ relationship to each other. The love of mother and daughter, the friendship of children, the pity and care of the administrator of the motel, all this is visible without unnecessary remarks and explanations and this movie bribes. In such films, there is rarely a happy ending, it does not follow from the logic of what is happening, here it can be described as rather unexpected and allegorical, maximally increasing the intensity of emotions heated throughout the film.
'Project Florida' - beautifully and skillfully filmed author's film about childhood, conveying the mood of carelessness and at the same time hopelessness of the existence of social waste in the American outback. The straightforward plot here is compensated by a good play of actors and a masterfully recreated soulfulness and sincerity of what is happening on the screen. I would not recommend the film to everyone, but if you are tired of the gloss and template of commercially verified, similar works of Hollywood, then perhaps this movie will appeal to you.

Very difficult to view and difficult to understand. Not for those who want to relax in the evening with a light movie. And not for those who are already ill. It was very painful to watch.
Many in this film pay attention to childhood, they say that it is so beautiful, despite everything, and if you have problems, you can escape to Disneyland. I didn't find it beautiful. The flow of mats that the girl Mooney pours on her neighbor immediately exposes the conditions in which these children have to live. Fantasy, games - great, but some homelessness still feels.
The girl's mother immediately causes dislike with her neglectful attitude to the antics of her daughter. But otherwise, I feel very sorry for her. As I realized (I don’t know if it’s right) Haley can’t find a job, and the director just decided not to show it. I've had enough of an episode where she talks about being fired and trying to sell perfume. Yes, she is angry and psychotic, but need does not make people happy. I'm not making excuses, I just understand why. As I understand people who do not want to communicate with her and help, because your problems do not give you the right to behave like this.
Understands the woman whose kids spit on the car, and Bobby. Maybe he's just seen too many losers. And in general, he has seen a lot, understands people, knows how to settle conflicts. Good guy.
When someone leaves you a child, that child becomes your responsibility.
Plot. Some third-rate hotel located near Disneyland in Orlando. There are representatives of the American bottom. They do not have a steady source of income, health insurance and everything else, so they have to live in small but cheap rooms.
In the center of everything (this is like a piercing-emotional film about childhood or am I wrong?) three preschoolers who are almost all the time left to themselves, so rush around, begging for money, spitting on other people's cars, setting fire to houses and doing a bunch of other unpleasant things.
Shot in the style of a pseudo-reality show with the daily life of the participants: a leisurely narrative, static shooting interspersed with shooting as if from a mobile phone, dialogue about nothing and terrible children.
The film runs for two hours, but the action could fit into twenty minutes. And here is the question: since the timekeeping was so inflated, then, perhaps, the author of this creation wants to convey to the audience some idea, on the “heating” of which long scenes were needed.
Probably, the main message was that in addition to the American dream, there is an American anti-dream, and that within its framework there is a stratum of people living on welfare from the state who do not have education or a decent income? If so, then all this is buried too deep under an extremely boring and tedious picture in pink and purple tones, to break through which, without dislocating the jaw from yawning, is difficult.
Or did the author want to draw attention to the need to help such people? But there is no desire to help those who do nothing and do not try. The careless mother of one of the girls did not want to strangle.
The relationship between children and parents? The daughter of the one I wrote about in the last paragraph is just like a mother and both are satisfied. So, too, by the way.
Perhaps, on the contrary, the idea was that no matter what conditions children live in, they will feel beautiful and carefree? Honestly, if in my head before that there were thoughts like “What kind of parent will I be?”, then the two-hour observation of an aqua of unbred, non-stop rude adults, children, whose adolescence will end in prison, drug addiction, early pregnancy and / or prostitution, caused only irritation, disgust and the question: “When the fuck will you calm down?”. Oh, no, not like that: I wanted to strangle them, too.
It's a meaningless and very, very boring movie. There is no coherent plot, to the social drama, as to the usual, the story does not reach, the semantic load died under the pressure of everyday uninterest and emotions died somewhere in the same place. Visually looks cheap, the acting game is average, the children were infuriated and looked played. The only joy that looked subtly and convincing was Willem Dafoe, who played the administrator of the motel, - the nomination for the Oscar for the role of the second plan deserves a hundred.
But it seems that the American film went well. It’s about them, so they know better.
Gray ordinariness of sunny Florida A poster with a happy family, a lot of scenes with cute entertainment of mother and daughter, their care for each other - everything in the film tries to evoke empathy for this incomplete family, make the viewer appease and sympathize. But there's something wrong. It's not working. At all. You can't sympathize with a careless mother who acts like cattle. Who leads men to herself without being shy of her daughter, who wipes her feet about those who do her good, who rudely insults everyone and rudely repels those who try to help her. She justifies herself with the fact that she has such a difficult life, but at the same time she does nothing to improve her situation, and her rudeness and selfishness only brings new problems to herself. She loves her daughter and takes care of her as best she can. But she's disgusting. Therefore, when at the end of the film in her life there is a quite logical tragedy, it does not cause sympathy or pity for her, which the director diligently tries to squeeze out of the audience. Rather, satisfaction from the fact that the obscurity of the heroine’s behavior led to a natural result. This short but boring movie is finally over. You can't please kids. The active and cheerful daughter of the main character tries to imitate her mother as much as she can and grows up as a little bum. No one is particularly engaged in her upbringing and education, so her childhood pranks often turn into petty mischiefs. And then they're pretty big. And the fact that she gets away with vile behavior and the director makes her look like an innocent victim of circumstance doesn't make her any more likable. Acting is the only thing the film can be praised for. The expressiveness and appearance of Bria Vinite make her character bright and memorable. Even on the negative side. The kids look very lively. But Willem Dafoe, nominated for Oscar and Golden Globe for his role in this film, disappointed. He's a great actor, but he doesn't have anything to play here. His hero is furniture. Walking and speaking, but in the plot and in the life of the heroine performing the same functions as a ladder or door. His character is devoid of individuality, of his own history. And that's disappointing. So is the movie. The main characters are disgusted, the plot, which consists of meaningless walks and conversations and has only one at least any significant event, is boring. And in general, the film evokes a feeling of some gray dull routine. Even though it takes place in sunny Florida. 2 out of 10 Original
America still has a chance to prove that its cinema is not entirely lost. Hollywood successfully fails these chances time after time, but independent cinema rushes to the rescue. A movie that can make a nation great again. However, it is not only in the United States that author's paintings are valued much more than their production ones, so we will immediately transfer to ' Florida' On the invisible and backwoods of a superpower.
I've been talking about the invisible backyards for a reason. Elmash immediately introduced himself. Just imagine the outskirts of Elmash. Preferably in a beautiful and warm summer. Low houses, barracks, forest, stalls, gardens. It sounds like a description of a random outback, but you will agree, this has its charm when such entourages border on something great, with something in nature chic in its scale. In the case of Elmash, we are talking about Yekaterinburg, in the case of 'Project 'Florida' - about Disneyland.
But we are not talking about Disneyland at all. Not even the backyard. It's about people, and let's start with one name. Sean Baker. It's not a bad name, let's move on: Willem Defoe. Here. Remember. Although everyone knows he's cool. It seems not the most epic role, and grandiose can not be called, but the charisma of this guy makes your eyes not take off the screen in the moments when he is present on the screen and does something. And Sean Baker's name, I think we'll hear more. Sooner or later.
And in the film, the relationship of the characters is well and warmly shown. It is difficult to call myself an admirer of something in the spirit of ' films about childhood' and I will remember a couple of pieces from strength, which I will not call good, but ' Florida' I will name. For the unfictitious relationships of the characters, for the beautiful landscapes and production, in which you feel what they say & #39; the author put his soul & #39; for warmth and kindness, which covers the gloomy social picture of what is happening. This is one of those films that looks cute, while being socially demanded, but does not carry anything bad. Just like ice cream, like shopping, like a selfie in a swimsuit.

Anguishing film about the hopelessness of childhood
FLORIDE PROJECT
On the sidelines of the world of endless Disney fun is an acid motel, and some people and their children live in it. Among them are the main characters - mother, Hailey, and daughter, Mooney. His daughter incessantly invents new games, petty joys and petty mischief, from extruding change on ice cream for herself and her friends to the accidental burning of an old uninhabited house. Haley (to me, Haley's bright-dark double from Mozart in the Jungle) is wandering around on part-time jobs, gradually moving from reselling cheap perfume to reselling herself. All this is a kind of ecosystem, the fragile stability of lost souls, who are broken to strive for something - and so it will go, because everyone has the right to live as they want, right?
Work is not a fun thing, but the heroes living in the Motel “Magic Castle” do not want to work – why, what is the point? It's not fun. What can be changed here?
If you fall, you can still grow, Mooney says of the fallen tree, which is still growing. But humans are not trees, never once, and the world does not contain an infinite sequence of second chances. If you fall, you have to get up, but nobody wants to get up here.
Radical disinterpretation of myths about positive thinking, acceptance of life-as-it-is... You can understand the movie like that. And you can - as well as "Lady Bird", as an anthem for childhood, so captivating and so finite.
Stat rosa pristina nomine, nomina nuda tenemus. Get up; the magic is over. Time to live.
The scorching sun over Florida, palm trees at every turn, the usual, leisurely life in a hotel on the outskirts - the beginning of the film appeared exactly like this. What immediately catches the eye is an atypical shooting style, unusual angles, pace, children close-up.
Speaking of children. They play a special role in this film, so sincere and funny - they are not burdened with the problems of adults, walk themselves without worries all day, eat what they want and as much as they want, do not hesitate, can easily break into the hotel manager's office and start hiding under the table, and then Willem Defom wants to shout and scold them, but it is worth one smile and laughter, how he immediately succumbs to the whims of children.
Throughout the film we see a series of positive moments and not so much. A harsh life in between a cheerful childhood makes itself felt. But this film should not be deeply reasoned, try to find here some plot, layout. This film just has to give, it fascinates and inspires. It reminds us of childhood, how it was unforgettable, rainbow, interesting.
After all, this film is not about drugs, a difficult life or a poor mother who is about to lose parental rights, it is the story of ordinary children who are not guilty of anything and want to be happy. They have their own world, a sunny world.
In English, the word project has a double meaning. In addition to the “project”, there is also a “den”. Therefore, life in marmalade-rainbow tones here is very deceptive and quite quickly changes to gray tones.
Near Disneyland there is a motel in which socially disadvantaged guests live. 6-year-old Mooney is left to her own devices, but can it interfere with her imagination? Everything can be turned into a game!
I saw cows, here's a safari! Tourists? Let's throw them in caps!! Whoo! You can't come in here! So what?! We'll do it anyway!! All in all, the little things are so nice! Tell me you didn’t have that when you were a kid!
In fact, the film is not about childhood, but about parents who did not have time to grow up. Sometimes a daughter looks like a mother, and here on the contrary, a mother looks like her daughter, a capricious hysterical who lives one day. What can she teach her child? Which one will Mooney raise? And will she be to blame for who she has become?
Little Mooney (Brooklyn Prince) lives with her mom Hayley (Bria Winayte) in a hotel room. Without permanent residence, they have to pay weekly for housing. Mooney’s mother does not have a steady income, she tries to earn money even illegally. Because of this, she has constant problems with the law, the guardianship authorities fear for Mooney. At the same time, the girl absolutely carefree spends time with her friends - running in the rain, eating ice cream, playing and laughing a lot. All this, albeit shaky, but happy childhood is possible for Mooney thanks to the manager Bobby (William Defoe). He protects his mother and daughter, allowing them to stay in the hotel indefinitely. Sometimes he curses Mooney and her friends, but he is equally sincerely attached to the guys, trying to protect them from strangers. But fate is quite cruel, no one is unpunished.
You can’t say that The Florida Project is a big movie. This bright, at first glance, picture is actually very dramatic. And she's kind of serene. We’ve all had our childhoods, and when you’re little, the colors around you seem brighter despite all the trouble. And Mooney's life is far from sugar. She does not fully understand what can happen to her, that they can be separated from their mother. The film teaches us to value loved ones, to be prudent and responsible to our children.
I want to repeat and note the bright color scheme that the film is designed with. Decorators have tried well to convey bright scenery, and screenwriters – to place in them rather gloomy events. Light music perfectly conveys the mood of the picture. Watching the film in the original language helps to better understand the atmosphere. Sean Baker, the director of the film, created a small world from which it is impossible to take your eyes off.
Apart from William Defoe, there are no professional actors in the film. Dafoe perfectly found ways of acting with them. He does not overdo it, he tries to single out his colleagues. His role in the film is key, there are few such people willing to help, while not showing it much, doing his job. The actor this year was nominated for all the most prestigious film awards, including “Oscar” and “Golden Globe”, but he never received awards, although for the actor – this is perhaps one of the best roles. It’s not emotionally difficult, but that’s its dignity. Children, especially young Brooklyn Prince looked very organic in the shot, they played, had fun and in the camera camera, as if not even looking. As for Brea Vinaite, who played Haley, she also well conveyed the image of the “near” American who is ready to have fun from night to morning and burn through her life in every possible way. At the same time, to call her a terrible mother, in my opinion, it is impossible, she tried to take care of the child.
This film cannot be attributed to art house, but still the film is festival, not for everyone, it does not have a dynamically developing plot and special effects. This is the story of a small family, of which there are many in the modern world. Household history, decorated with bright colors. A picture for those who love a sincere film, devoid of embellishment (except for the scenery).

I was able to watch Project Florida on the big screen, and I probably would have turned it off at home in the thirtieth minute. Another festival film, another film with an Oscar nomination for 2018 for Best Supporting Actor (Willem Defoe). Although the work of Sean Baker did not receive any awards, it deserves the attention of a sophisticated audience. The main disadvantages of the picture include slow development, some protractedness and lack of a clear storyline, but otherwise the film is beautiful and worthy of viewing. The director takes an unusual approach, showing social drama: a completely banal story about a young single mother living in a cheap motel becomes unique when the viewer begins to perceive the world through the eyes of a child.
The fabulous location of the shooting – a purple castle-motel located near Disneyland – seems magical in the first minutes. Perceptions change after meeting guests drowning in poverty and unemployment. However, the viewer sees this picture through the prism of the perception of a six-year-old girl with a happy face who does not notice the decline around her. Mooney (Brooklyn Prince), carefree and brisk, runs through the rainbow streets of the outskirts of Orlando with her friends: collects money from passers-by for ice cream, shouts forbidden words, spits at cars, eats free waffles, accidentally sets fire to abandoned areas and still continues to enjoy life. She is happy and the viewer laughs with her, feels resentment, feels like a child until he realizes the deplorable consequences of such a life. This film is filled with complex characters, for which I want to continue watching. Not the plot and events, but ambiguous characters are kept at the screen.
Separately, it is worth noting the acting game. It feels like children were filmed from within their environment, so natural they are. The final scene (one of the best I’ve seen in a while) is a close-up of a weeping Mooney, followed by an unexpected open finale. The viewer believes these doomed eyes, at which point the fictional story becomes reality. Many people will say that children themselves evoke more emotions than animals do, and that using them is the easiest way. But in the context of this film, I totally disagree with that statement. The film is also filled with talented actors. Mooney's crazy mother is played by Bria Vinite, who became the opening of this film. And the calm unobtrusive play of Willem Defoe corresponds to his character, who quietly assists everyone around, not paying attention to the fact that no one thanks him: he deftly calculates a pedophile on the playground, forgives debts, is ready to pay for accommodation.
The film was shot entirely on film, perhaps, so the color component in combination with colorful locations fills with a sense of magic. The colorfulness and saturation of the frames comes into dissonance with the sad story, apparently, this is what Sean Baker sought. An interesting decision of the cameraman Alexis Zebe was shooting at the level of children's eyes, which allows the viewer to perceive the world differently. Everything seems big and the purple sky is too far away. Involuntarily you start to nostalgic ...
“Project Florida” is remembered not by history, but by an unconventional approach. The director decided to show the most vulnerable segments of society, who are a step away from poverty, through the eyes of a child. This move made the situation easier, because there is only here and now for children. In fact, Sean Baker played a delicate psychological game with the audience, giving only inconspicuous details that allow you to understand the horror of what is happening. For example, when Mooney washes in the bathroom while playing and listens loudly to rap, she does not know how her mother earns a living at this very moment, and the viewer is only indirectly beginning to understand this. Without revealing anything at once, half hints and details, the director builds a holistic picture and the viewer realizes what life the young heroine is doomed to. Already during the credits, the initial scenes come to mind, acquiring a completely new meaning when the picture is built as a whole.
I have zero experience in creating reviews or texts, but why exactly this picture prompted to share emotions that overwhelm after watching.
Indeed, they say that cinema should make the viewer forget that he is sitting in a movie. It was as if I was passing through this Florida hotel, horrified by the guests of this place, sympathized with the hard work of the character Willem Dafoe, and watched the children who live in the background of all this horror and remain children. They have the same games, the same pranks, in general, the things for research inherent in children. And in this role of observer I was until the very end.
In the film, the exhibition is not enough - this applies to the hotel and the guests themselves. But I didn't think it bothered me much. I know heroes by their reactions to certain situations, behavior and actions. I wanted to know more about the pasts of Bobbie, Haley and other characters.
Children are not annoying, you believe them. Here you probably need to praise the director, it is not clear how Shawn Baker achieved this effect, but the feeling that he just convinced the children that there are no cameras. It's not even an acting game, the kids just lived their role. Operator work is also at a height, it looks very harmonious.
I think this movie is about kids having to enjoy their childhood no matter what. The guests of this hotel symbolize their possible future, and what they do not notice now can overtake them in the future.
The Florida Project is a Sean Baker movie that leaves many conflicting thoughts and feelings behind. This film cannot be called weak, bad or informal. The story, told by the director, touches on the relationship of a young dissolute mother (Bria Winayte) with her six-year-old daughter Mooney (Brooklyn Prince).
Baker managed to fully show two worlds: a beautiful childhood and reality, in which Mooney quite harmoniously exists. This girl loves her friends, adventures, games and, of course, her mother. Prince's character knows no other life. The girl's mother can be called an asshole, a scum of society. She is rude, but despite her obvious flaws, indecent and disgusting behavior towards Bobby (Willem Defoe), her hotel friend, and strangers, she begins to feel unwittingly sorry. Why? Hard to answer. Possibly, the heroine Vinayte reveals herself through a special love for her daughter. Yes, this is not generally accepted motherhood, when a mother herds her child, is engaged in education, prepares healthy food. But this is love.
Mooney's mother doesn't want to work all day, like her friend. It is easier for her to make dirty money illegally, on the verge of risk or through bed. The director could have made the film tougher, for example, if Mooney had seen what her mother was doing to feed them. And then the magic of childhood would be shattered. Fortunately, the girl’s world remains the same. She has nothing to do every day exploring the city. Each time it is a little adventure. Mooney is a charming child, unfortunately, who does not know what is good and what is bad. From the first shot it becomes clear that the girl is not from a prosperous family. The sad thing is that, most likely, Mooney will turn into her mother, mirroring her behavior and lifestyle.
Defoe surprisingly subtly played the role of Bobby, engaged in the arrangement of the hotel in which Mooney lives with his mother. He sees everything and closes his eyes. Hero Defoe in his own way loves Mooney and her parent, protects them. Bobby is an absolutely kind person. Perhaps in the career of an actor is one of the most touching images. You believe his hero. Defoe is convincing and beautiful.
I want to mention the camera work. The film has many bright colors, different angles of the characters and nature, which reflect the child’s perception of the world of Mooney. Life is beautiful for her. She believes in fairy tales and miracles.
Baker made a movie that is hard to forget. The Florida project is a difficult story that leaves no chance of indifference.
I watched the new project of the director Sean Baker ("Mandarin") - a film, skipping which, you will definitely not lose anything. However, if curiosity prevails, the outcome will be unpredictable. Why? Everything in order.
Summer. Kissimi, Florida. Mooney (Brooklyn Prince), a sociable and harmful 6-year-old girl, lives with her mother Haley (Bria Winayte) in a motel. While a stupid young mother makes ends meet in search of a stable income, the child is left to himself all day, hanging around the neighborhood with the neighboring children. They are looked after by the manager of the motel Bobby (Willem Defoe) .
Project Florida is a very colorful film. Thanks to the 35 mm film, a bright color palette, twisted with light grain, creates a feeling of sunny Miami of the 80s. The city of Kissimi, where the action of the picture takes place, charms with its atmosphere and creates a homely coziness from which you do not want to get out.
Operational work is the main advantage of the film. I don’t know if Alexis Zabe was inspired by the work of the operator Robert D. Jowman and the director Wes Anderson (The Kingdom of the Full Moon, The Grand Budapest Hotel), but the style is similar. This is especially noticeable in the use of trajectory shooting (when the camera for a long time follows the character in front, side or rear). This creates not only the volume in the frame, but also focuses on the action, creates the appearance of a theatrical production.
The cast makes an impression. The main "star" of the film is Brooklyn Prince. Despite her young age, the little actress behaves very naturally in front of the camera, generating the whole range of childhood emotions throughout the film: from blistering laughter to “bitter” crying. Through the eyes of her heroine, we see events happening on the screen, imbued with carelessness and playfulness, elusive love and tangible anger. Willem Defoe for his role was rightly nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Supporting Actor. His character combines quite contradictory traits of character - rigor, determination, sensitivity and mercy. And if he appears on the screen, he steals all the attention on himself.
The script is the main problem. Watching Project Florida is not easy. At the beginning, it delays, but by the end of the first hour you will begin to fidget nervously in the chair and look at the clock, as nothing worthwhile happens on the screen, and the plot does not move from the “dead point”. And when the narrative presents a “gift” in the form of long-awaited activity, and the eagerly awaited viewer joyfully rubs his hands, everything collapses before his eyes with another stretched and repeated scenes. And if towards the end of the plot takes a completely opposite mood of the film sad turn, he spoils it with a discouraging ending. And it does it so that at first you do not understand whether this is a joke or true, because the final credits have gone. All this I mean is that on the fingers of one hand you can count the cool moments, but they are connected so poorly that the output is meaningless in content film, which is more boring to watch than vice versa. And this is with a fairly good script idea, where in the process of watching you understand that children sometimes behave much more adequately than adults.
In conclusion, I want to say that the impressions of the “Project Florida” resemble a trip to an expensive restaurant, which prepares the most delicious steaks. Beautiful interior, polite staff, pleasant company at the table, you make a conscious order. And now, in place of agonizing anticipation, after you taste meat, comes a devastating disappointment. It seems to be delicious, and the price tag is fair, but the meat does not stand out. I ate, but the bitter sediment remained, because there are places with a kitchen no worse.

As the main artistic technique, Baker in the two-act “Project Florida” uses the unity of the opposites of Hegel’s grandfather, which not only do not fight against each other, but also periodically harmonize.
At the story level, the first part, filmed in the mood of light summer idleness, evoking allusions with Vigo’s masterpiece Zero for Behavior and the classic 400 Blows. Truffaut contrasts with the acutely social discourse of the second half, but Baker masterfully balances between the two antitheses, never stepping into something bad like loose plotlessness or melodramatic saliva.
At the visual and semantic level, the director also finds application to a sophisticated philosophical principle: a clean, licked paradise facade of smelling muck and affluence of hot Florida, is more like hell for people from a nearby one-story American marginal, in which entertainment is only a fire of dilapidated slums, a fight with drunken neighbors or a helicopter flying nearby, and behind the amazingly beautiful nature and acidic urban diversity, the author hides a difficult life of people whose every day is like a struggle for survival.
Every frame of Baker shimmers with all the colors of the rainbow, bursts with optimism and faith in the best that infects the viewer, making you believe that despite and despite the bedbugs on the wall, empty pockets and ugly things in the next room, the life of Mooney and her friends is still beautiful, full of adventure and simple joys.
And these hundred days of childhood on the outskirts of Florida are fraught with one of the most wonderful memories of the past year and one of the most beautiful escapes in the history of cinema.

About Sean Baker, the director of the film “Project Florida”, started talking in 2015 after the release of his film “Mandarin”, shot entirely on the iPhone 5s. The director resorted to shooting on the phone, and at first even hid it, solely for lack of funds, and not for the sake of unnecessary noise and bait for journalists. And I must say that it turned out to be a quality movie, not a home video, as many might think. The budget of the painting “Project Florida” was two million dollars, which by modern standards is also not much, but more than a hundred thousand spent on “Mandarin”. Thus, Baker was able to shoot Project Florida on 35 mm film and invite the charismatic Willem Dafoe to play an important role, although not the main one. The actor did great, for which he received an Oscar nomination, in the category “Best Supporting Actor”. Other roles in the film are mostly performed by non-professional actors, and this applies not only to children, but also adults. The movie mother of the main character is played by Bria Winite. She interested the director, either curious videos about his life, posted on Instagram, or chic tattoos, which are all visible in the film. But still the main stars in the film are children, and first of all the charming Brooklyn Prince, who attracts attention throughout the film.
The name of the film “Project Florida” was chosen not by chance, originally it was supposed to be called Disney World, located near Orlando, Florida. And the action of the picture takes place in a long-term motel, just located near the world-famous amusement park. In the motel, with the wonderful name “Magic Castle”, lives a girl Mooney (Brooklyn Prince) with her mother Hayley (Bria Winayte). They live on benefits, and sometimes together trade in illegal counterfeiting. There are plenty of people like them in this motel. The good-natured man Bobby (Willem Defoe) runs the motel, repairing and repairing the old building, and sometimes the lives of its inhabitants, while not reading morals and not trying to replace his father with them.
Project Florida immerses us in a carefree childhood, where the world is filled with bright colors and colors, where green is greener and red is redder. What is only one purple motel, in which the childhood of Mooney (for sure for her mother it looks much duller). For her, a motel, and he, in fact, and a home filled with various eccentric guests, where she and friends blithely play and walk, appears as a whole world, and a hike for ice cream a couple of blocks - a huge journey. Sean Baker captures the striking feature of childhood, when each day discovers something new, previously unexplored, and that for children’s happiness, in general, not much is needed. In addition to the adventures of young heroes, we observe a one-story America, where the room has a TV with daytime shows or a sofa shop all day, and where life is no better than in the provincial cities and villages of our vast homeland, contrary to the established opinion: “They have everything in the West, everything is fine.”
American and international critics warmly and highly praise this work and call it “the best film about childhood”. To some extent, they’re right, but it’s not clear what the director means by making the film as if he’s looking at the world through the eyes of a child. We don’t know much more about Haley than a girl at that age can. The question of what can be taught by such a mother, who herself, in fact, is still a child, remains open, and perhaps even not asked.

Sometimes such films appear in the world of the film industry, more like a fairy tale, something magical and anti-realistic, akin to magic, in which such a miraculous perception is caused only by insignificant facts, and the story taking place on the screen is actually tragic and has no obvious path to the bright path. The proximity of the amusement park and the general indicator of childhood in the eternal comparison of children and parents are responsible for such a direction in the “Project Florida”, which, with all the relative ugliness, is highlighted by a sense of carelessness and enchantment.
In fact, the reasons for this paresthesia, more and more perceptible towards the end of the film, are the great love and sympathy for the characters of the director of the tape, Sean Baker, for whom this work is a mixture of creative and lived. His feelings can be seen in the hero of Willem Dafoe, the only adult and wise hero of the film, who also cares about the lives of his motel guests, a young girl who has not found her platform in life, her children and everyone else whose childhood passes somewhere near the backyards of real joy, in purple walls painted artificially, but never felt.
Childhood is a unique time period, where emotions are the natural environment of your body, and society is just beginning to despoticly censor and control them. Childhood is the only successful escape from reality. It is this escape that the director tries to visualize for his viewer, and metaphorizing linearly and in the forehead - the vast majority of the timekeeping camera rushes for running children who need to determine in which part of the multi-colored courtyards, replete with inner gray, their real life is hidden. And it is necessary to look for it, because to be guided by your fate, as does the heroine of Bria Vinite, Mooney’s mother, the girl who is speculatively the main character in the film, is absolutely not a positive direction of life choice, at least in the form of its content.
Halley, the heroine of Vinite, as is customary in this kind of films, and at all represents an adult child, the same capricious, not finding restrictions and still in need of knowledge. Their travels with their daughter around the district are equally unconscious, whether for one or another. Their understanding of each other is at an intuitive level. With all the negative situations encapsulated in the tape, Shawn Baker was able to give the conflicts the emotions of external misunderstandings, preserving the feeling of unity of the heroes who are in the shadow of their own happiness.
This is definitely a “geographic” movie. Biography of Florida as a state. Portrait of motels along highways. One-story pamphlet. This is a demonstration, a protest of sunny America, where for all the brightness of the state, not everyone has enough “sun”. This is an unpleasant illusion in its magic. It's dirt in the gift box. And, most likely, one of the best illustrations of childhood, of that childhood that is overseas among the majority of children who are not familiar with the concept of wealth and run in search of what they can not get. This is a small local trip through a large country, like trampling on the spot with progress.
Maybe too simple to be a drama. But definitely, very charmingly, conveying the naive spontaneity that everyone spends before getting acquainted with a future self-portrait.
"Childhood, Childhood, Where Do You Go?"
Childhood, childhood, where are you in a hurry?
I haven't played with you yet.
Childhood, childhood, where are you going?
It's good to be a kid. You are not immersed in the problems of this world, you are not trying to get out of these adversity and life suits you as you are. Let life be poor. Let it be limited. I don't understand. But so familiar. So full of the usual joys you find everywhere. So simple with friends with whom you never want to leave. Such joys will outweigh any adversity, right?
Similar feelings are experienced by little Mooney, who lives with her mother in a provincial motel somewhere in Florida. Her mother can't get a job, and there's barely enough money to pay for a room. Such an ordinary and existing somewhere near, very close to someone, ' life on the sidelines' A life full of difficulties seems to be. But not for Mooney. Mooney's happy. They have friends they play with. In those games, when it does not matter what you do, but the imagination and those around you. For Mooney, life doesn't seem complicated, this ' life on the sidelines' looks as fun as any other. Yes, she dreams of a bigger house and toys around, yes, she would like more ice cream and an iPad on hand, but that’s not the most important thing. There are friends nearby. There's a loving mom. Yes, even that evil manager does not look so bad, and is always ready to protect from adult dangers, which, perhaps, you do not even know. Mooney has a life, a childhood and the joy that comes from there. She dances and sings, runs and jumps, rejoices and enjoys. And the carefree pink world seems never to end. But behind the pink veil there is an unpleasant grayness that tries to penetrate into this world.
The grayness and severity of adult life, life that is so close, adult problems that are so incomprehensible to children. Take Haley, Mooney's mom. The hero is incredibly difficult to exist, but she always finds solace in her daughter. She cannot show her the existing inner pain, the pain of a situation from which she does not know how to get out, and why she does things that are unpleasant to her. For her, the youngest and most eager for life, there is nothing more important than her daughter. Of course, some motel owner next door will say that you can't raise your daughter like that, and that your mother is a terrible role model. Maybe it is. It probably is. It's not just the Latinos next door who are likely to judge her. Shawn Baker is not very important. For a director, the smallest happiness that mother and daughter find in each other is important. Happiness that seems to fade under the torrent of life's difficulties. Living in this sunny Florida.
There she is. Florida. Bright, juicy, dazzling. And dazzling not by nature, but by the energy of life, an ordinary town with ordinary cafes, motels and shops. Get out of your decorated room of the bright pink hotel and keep running. Here's a huge orange next door to a bearded shop. There's Disneyland out there somewhere. Yes, the one for which even Brazilian tourists come here. Go a little further and there is nature, so quiet and peaceful, with cows and trees around. Get out of them on that big and lying and see this bright world. A world where even a fallen tree can grow. That same tree, reminiscent of this ' life on the sidelines' when, it would seem, how do you grow if you are already down. But the tree can, why can't someone else?
Baker sings an ode to the carelessness of childhood, making you feel sorry and nostalgic for this wonderful period. This is the time that consumes all adversity. A period where much for happiness and not necessary: enough ice cream for three, one spit on the car, one dance with mom and one walk around the neighborhood. It is a wonderful time that cannot disappear. I don't want it to disappear.
And when you get the feeling that the tape, like the usual life of Mooney, will be filled only with this childish joy, thanks to the cleverest scenario, where every insignificant scene appears in the narrative further and helps to make up the full picture, moves from childish carelessness to the real adult drama. A real-life drama that is so eager to destroy the usual joy and ease for a little girl who does not yet understand why her mother is arguing with someone, why her uncle did not want to go to the bathroom again and why everything suddenly changes. Despite all the bright and colorful tones filled with lightness, 'Project Florida' is a heavy and sad drama about people who exist in a difficult situation, about people ' on the sidelines ' thinking how to grow up when they fall. Where even all the brightness of Florida can't hide all the bad. On the screen is a real drama of growing up. Adulthood, coming completely unexpectedly, where no one can promise that it, like the future of adulthood, will be pleasant. All this pink world will ever disappear, its tones will fade, and problems will come one by one. But you know what? For now, while there is that little moment of carelessness, grab your feet in your hands, your friends and girlfriends, and run without stopping to a place where childhood always reigns. Try to stay here longer. Longer in this wonderful world of childhood, so quickly, unfortunately, going somewhere. . .
Calm, pleasant, film about the little charms of childhood. How children entertain themselves every day, God.
The plot shows us how the heroine of Brya Vinite tries to do everything possible to ensure the life of her little daughter (Brooklyn Prince) in this world. Everything so that the daughter has what to eat, where to live, what to dress and so on. Let her know that even when there are problems, life does not end.
The character of Willem Defoe acts as a kind of overseer for everything that happens in the hotel, but also a kind of semblance of the Defender & #39. Given the seemingly simple role, Defoe shows a wonderful performance, making his hero alive, real, in which you want to believe. A man who's hard to shake off. This is especially well demonstrated in the final picture.
During the whole time of watching, you involuntarily begin to remember how you had fun at the same age as these children. Memories roll in and a smile automatically appears on the face.
Thank you Sean Baker for somehow making me remember pleasant moments from my childhood so good, kind, even with an unexpected ending, a tape. It may not be an Oscar movie, but it definitely deserves attention. For home, lamp, viewing.
“Project Florida”, a small-speaking title that appears only once in the film. Curiously, but in the picture on a given acutely social theme, the actress was searched for the main role on the Internet. It is necessary to immediately determine that despite the nomination of William Defoe is still the role of a clearly developed background. And at the head of the story is a mother and daughter.
The mother is a brawler, painfully impressive and destructive woman-child, whose infantile inclinations will envy even Bruce Robinson from the town of Edinburgh. Surprisingly, the author’s submission with light strokes presents the viewer with quite clear outlines of the fact that in general, she is not a bad mother. And that she still loves her child very much. But does this negate the fact that there are some facets that it is better for yourself not to cross? Especially if you're raising a child. First of all, if your responsibility is now not only yourself.
The picture touches on the eternal themes that are acute in the social foundation since time immemorial. The problem of parenting. The problem of moral education as a person. A rational view of the situation from within where it is no longer possible. Responsibility for the child in cases where you are still a teenager.
Every now and then the eye catches certain light scenes that develop and show the relationship between mother and daughter. Smooth and funny scenes of how mommy spins, turns and wants to pamper her daughter. Sometimes. And yet, through all these numerous scenes of fun “two girls” an inevitable step can be seen the sad finale of what is happening on the screen.
Mommy stole $1,700 bracelets, mommy started driving a man to the same room with her child for money, mommy can't find a job. And behind all this there is only one state of perception of life. EZ money, EZ life, infantileness and the desire for an easy life. But not your dear (or not so dear) author to judge people.
After all that is happening, once again you think – if you look like her, as a person, as an impulsive person – do you have children? People don’t think much about this responsibility.
The image of William Defoe, although fatherly, but still trivial. He tries to keep his distance as gentlemanly as possible, but still feels his responsibility for them. And not just for them. He is a hotel manager, responsible, working and understanding. The image of a non-stupid, but simple person watching a catastrophe from the outside, but having no chance to prevent this catastrophe.
Time-lapse. Dafoe nervously smokes another cigarette. People came from the care.
And when you see those tears in the eyes of a child saying goodbye to his girlfriend, it hurts. And let this story be completely banal – it does not become less true and urgent from this.
But American filmmakers do not like to make the audience too painful. Escape to the Walt Disney World Recreation Center as the last fulcrum in this immoral world. A large and innocent point of support, lying on small shoulders.

Life in the Florida ghetto is not a sweet thing. To live in the Florida ghetto, you have to have willpower. But kids don't have it that strong. So how do they live, have fun, in general, spend their time well. How do they do that? Their parents. They help them feel great. They may not be the best parents in the world, but they try to be. They have their flaws, problems, and troubles that they fall into all the time. But does that make them bad?
And here she is, Haley, Mooney's mother, an average, unremarkable resident of the Florida ghetto. Haley and Mooney live in a long-term motel in Kissimmi. She does not work, receives money from the help service for the poor, smokes a joint, sells burnt perfume to passers-by and leads a seemingly carefree life.
Her daughter, Mooney, spends her summer vacations the way she needs to – having fun with her friends, running around Kissimmi, eating ice cream, harassing the motel manager with her friends, and never getting upset.
But this life, a carefree life, is good but impossible, like any life, without problems and troubles, and both Haley and her daughter have them. And they don't try to deal with them, it's alien to them. They live with them, try to get used to them and, naturally, get more and more problems and troubles. Problems one by one fall on life and what will all this lead to?
The review does not allow me to tell you all the plot and scenario twists. At the very end, you can decide for yourself who is right and who is wrong, or you can not decide at all and leave everything as it is, without thinking, because this movie will not seem acutely social for everyone, for many it will just turn out to be another ' a movie ' about childhood and attempts to keep it in yourself longer.
Operational work.
She's beautiful. Perfectly captures all the warm moods of the Florida summer. Children's games - and they look good thanks to camera work - are minor and at the same time relaxed, so fun. My mood while watching this K&N O became much better, because I saw a real summer in Florida. Not a bit distorted. I think that's what it is. Depressing, beautiful and fascinating - I am convinced.

The Florida Project is a beautiful and melancholy film filled with acute social overtones. It will not bore you in any way. This movie will try to hook you every minute, and believe me, it will succeed.
