Romy and Robinson. At the beginning of her career, Romy Schneider often starred in the roles of naive and pure girls experiencing the first serious love feeling in her life. Such films brought the actress great popularity both in her native Austria and in Germany. But the film “Robinson must not die” is somewhat different from them as the plot, and the place and time of action. This time the events of the tape unfold in England at the beginning of the XVIII century.
Although the film's title mentions Robinson Crusoe, he never appears on screen, and its creator, Daniel Defoe, is only a minor character. We meet an already elderly writer when he lost his fortune due to royal opal and is forced to live in a modest hotel next to a cotton factory. Dafoe often tells the story of Robinson to children working in the factory, including young Maud Cantley. In addition, the writer is at odds with his son Tom, who made debts, could not pay them and because of this ended up in prison.
In love with Tom Maude decides to help him pay off his debts. She visits him in prison and leaves herself as bail so Tom can visit his seriously ill father. During this visit, Tom steals from his father the only remaining value - the manuscript of the novel "Robinson Crusoe", which immediately sells at a ridiculous price. Meanwhile, the boys from the factory escape and try to hire sailors on the ship to see with their own eyes the desert island on which Robinson lived. Now Maud has only one opportunity to help the writer and save his beloved - to gain an audience with the king.
If you want to know the details of the life of Daniel Defoe or the story of the creation of his immortal novel, then you will be disappointed. This is not a biographical drama, but only a soulful and unassuming entertaining film that does not claim historical authenticity. For the career of Romy Schneider, the film did not play a large role, but now it is most often remembered only thanks to her participation.
