"Make Christmas blue." ... or "There's nothing wrong with that"
Many parents, after learning that their child is gay, grab their head, arrange tantrums or completely stop communicating with him, coldly declaring that they no longer have a son. It is this meaning that is embedded in the film “Make Christmas blue”, but the approach here, unlike many similar paintings, is chosen humorous and quite easy, so as not to turn the viewing into another drama with a tragic ending. That’s why I say thank you to the creators.
Olaf is quite an ordinary guy, a college student, with the same life as millions of students. He lives in a dormitory, tries to pass exams well and dreams of spending his Christmas holidays interestingly. Olaf wouldn’t stand out in society if it weren’t for one thing: he’s gay. In addition, he has a loved one - Nathan, without whom he does not want life.
On vacation Olaf is going home, Nathan – too, but by the will of fate he is on the doorstep of Olaf’s house, not knowing that his “half” has not yet bothered to tell his parents the truth about his orientation. And the whole film our heroes (which is not surprising) will build a comedy, so that very, very good-natured parents Olaf did not understand that their only son, to whom they promised a beautiful wife and a happy family life, is a homosexual.
From the very first minutes, it becomes clear that the film is filled with positives. There are no heartbreaking stories from the lives of the heroes (except for the revelations of Nathan, who, in fact, still does not cause strong pity).
Do you know Josh?
- What Josh? Which one is from the parallel group or the student council?
- From the student council.
- No, I don't know.
- Never mind. He told his parents about his sexuality. So now they do not want to know him, and it is good that he gets a scholarship, otherwise he would have to drop out of college.
It seems that admitting your orientation to parents is perhaps the most terrible thing in the life of any gay man, which, in fact, is understandable: after all, parents are people who are closer to a person there is no one, and how they will treat their son after confession is a very controversial issue. Therefore, Olaf Nathan understands the excitement and secrecy, but up to a certain point. In the end, it is hard for him to realize that this is a stage passed for him and his parents, so distant from their child, are hurting the guy, while Olaf’s mother and father are still close to their son. Here there are many different feelings: envy, resentment, disappointment, shame (for envy of a loved one) and still love. It’s the only one that makes this movie.
The parents’ love for their son; the son’s love for his parents; Nathan’s love for Olaf; Olaf’s love for Nathan, which later made the young man overcome all doubts and fear. But I must say that the viewer seems to be confident in the finale from the very beginning: in front of him opens infinitely kind and bright nature of the mother – Ani and albeit a little serious, but quite understanding image of the father – Sven. Their jokes on their son, hospitality and almost maternal attitude of Ani to Nathan clearly tell us that they are ready and quite ready to understand everything.
We must also admit that the number of characters in the tape is quite limited, and almost ninety percent of them are kind and generally charming people. For example, Olaf’s former childhood friend Abby (the actress Holly Hersh, known to me only from the very dubious film “Silent Screams”, looked good) turned out to be a real charmer, able not only to create two images for herself (and a good and bad girl), but also to really become a good friend to two guys in love with each other, in order to, albeit not help, but at least cheer.
Overall, a very nice movie. Easy, fun and too touching (although not to snot). I wish there were more parents in the world. I am sure that in this case, the number of suicides would be significantly reduced, and life would become much easier.
