The tale of a bad storyteller... So, expressing a purely my opinion (objective or not it is not for me to judge), the film turned out to be extremely unsuccessful. Here’s why, in my opinion:
First, and most importantly, there is no target audience. Well, you will agree, neither an adult, nor even a teenage film does not pull a picture in which a cute little green monster shoots a boy with poop. And so we should expect a fairy tale for children full of wonders and adventures. But that wasn't it! For most of the film, we are told how poor and hard the main characters live: they eat leftovers, wear rags, work to exhaustion - is not the preamble too harsh for a fairy tale?! And most importantly, in the end they are waiting not for a magical fulfillment of wishes, but only the absence of even greater grief - a dubious motif for a children's film.
Second, even if you accept the film as a children’s film, you can’t show it to children! And the point is not even in the heartbreaking footage of the lives of the poor - this may not hurt the general development of the worldview. But here is the mocking insult of teachers, hazing and hooliganism in primary school, the teacher picking his nose and other anti-hygienic moments, and of course the absolutely spoiled behavior of the main character – all this is simply not acceptable to show children, unless you grow rare criminal authorities.
And thirdly, there are many similar and much more sane films, both for children and for family viewing. And if you want to please the child, it is better to include him good old "E.T." Spielberg, "Flubber" or "Gremlins".
The film can only be given:
4 out of 10
(and just for a cute little green animal)
