And who falls in love, tell me, with queens? Beautiful unhurried television production of a French play on a historical basis from French masters of cinema is a real celebration of the soul! Hugo's play, the same one; as the story tells, he wrote this play in verse in a little over a month and after a couple of weeks it was released in print, which is amazing, you just listen to it - and in this film the Word is in the foreground and everything is subordinated to him. The play is written in the style of Alexandrian verse - a twelve-syllabic size with a mandatory sequence of male and female rhymes and a mandatory accent location. And somehow this huge work was written in a month. The film offers a decent translation of Hugo and the appropriate style of the film sounding - a rare chance to fully enjoy almost the original source.
A film for lovers of historical novels, love experiences, poetry, impeccable acting and directorial work.
The only thing: it is a shame for the actor playing the main role, Xavier Galle, who practically takes all the attention of the viewer with his amazing play, but who stands in the credits in fourth place, after the masters of French cinema - apparently, this is the fate of young and unknown actors, as he was at that time - it was his debut in the cinema.
By the way, the monster of French cinema Depardieu in the film is very restrained and inexpressive in the manifestation of emotions, which is quite possibly the idea of director Jacques Weber, who himself wonderfully played one of the main roles.
As many more views as I've had -- and I'll remember the whole play by heart -- when will I get bored? If you watch online, then - the version for 108 minutes, the rest go in a stripped-down form and even without the second part (and a pleasant viewing!).
“And if God became a man on earth, then the Devil could not become a woman” – that’s fine! and the actors tried to glory, so that we could fully appreciate this easy play of words, which is given to the Author, oh, how difficult.
