If you're a fan of old and forgotten anime like me, the plot of this miniseries may sound very familiar to you. Stories like this are common in Japanese manga and anime. Legends about the confrontation between good and evil, a strong protagonist, his mentor, and a girl who needs to be saved. Despite some clumsiness of the plot, there are a number of moments that may surprise you and seem quite original.
In ancient times, the ruler of Japan, helped by an ancient cult that owned black magic. Having lost influence, they made attempts to regain power for many centuries in a row. Their next attempt is to gather in one place, the human incarnation of the four sacred beasts, and by performing some ritual, they will be able to regain their former power. Of course, not everyone agrees. And those who once overthrew them will try their best to prevent their revenge.
As happens most often, the plot in such anime is a bit confusing for Western viewers, and especially for those who are not familiar with the vicissitudes of Japanese history and mythology. However, it is not difficult to follow events. But it should be noted that the script of each series was written by different people and this is noticeable, even in the style of storytelling. In each series there are several references to famous at the time, Hollywood thrillers and action films.
In continuation of what I found interesting, this kind of internal aesthetic of the frame and unusual angles, the general atmosphere of violence, sometimes diluted with jokes. Also beautifully shown fights and reincarnations. Of the heroes, I liked the abbot and the monk fighters the most. I would like to know their story separately. Despite a rather rare ending for such stories, this film could get a sequel. I would definitely appreciate it!
If you like rare and old anime, be sure to watch.
