Death in one hand and the unknown in the other. This is the first Robert Taylor movie I’ve seen. I hope not the last. To be honest, I was suspicious of this actor. A kind of inner intuition that signaled: handsome means either not very talented or not very hardworking. Actor, what is necessary, frankly speaking. And more. In 1936, when his brother’s wife hit theaters, Robert Taylor was 25. No longer a boy, but not yet an experienced movie star. But what I saw in his performance, except brilliant play. Throughout the whole picture, he managed not just to create one image, as sometimes the actors sin not very hard. Robert certainly did a great job, because those transitions from one state to another, and so naturally and simply deserve the kindest words. The skill and skill of Taylor in this film is that you do not just believe this person, and without exaggeration do not just fall under his charm, he literally immerses you in his world. And it's expensive. And Barbara Stanwyck didn't let it down, which is true. Maybe by today’s standards she can not be called a sexdive, but the fact that in this film she did not spoil the lunch, I can say for sure. Yes, somewhere slipped sharp notes in the voice, but this only speaks of the actress’s indifference to the matter that she does.
As for the film itself, its storyline is very peculiar and interesting from many points of view. For example, I never thought about the scientists who discover vaccines and serums that can cure people. After watching the movie, I wanted to read something about it. But that's just one line. There's another one. Yes, the notorious relationship between a man and a woman, which is not without its zest on the one hand, and on the other hand, the sacrifice of life for the sake of a loved one. And in this movie, it's all there. Without sweetness, delicacy, but at the highest level.
Does not the father say to his son:
It will take time for you to learn how to serve people, but once it gets into your heart, you will understand what it is worth living for!
Not only for this phrase, in fact in this film they are more than enough.
To sum up: excellent directing and impeccable acting! I’m adding this to my favorite movie!
