Everyone says I'm superstitious, but I'm lucky! After the huge success of the musical "Jane Disaster", in no way inferior to the success of the film "Annie Gets Your Gun", the further career of Doris Day entered a period of crisis. In the courtyard was 1954, the changes were not so noticeable, but it was felt that the type of heroines played on the screen Doris began to seem old-fashioned.
Musical-melodramatic comedy "I'm lucky" or, as it is called on this site, "Lucky" was released on the screens April 9, 1954 and became the penultimate film Doris Day, shot at the studio Warner Bros., as well as the first musical shot on the system CinemaScope.
The plot of the picture is simple: Candy Williams, an artist from the second-rate show group “Paris Beauties”, is incredibly superstitious. One day, a mechanical street gypsy fortune teller predicts her encounter with a mysterious stranger that will change her fate. Meanwhile, the performances of the troupe are not successful, and everyone is expelled from the theater.
After a series of adventures, everyone has to work out the bill for a chic dinner at the restaurant in the hotel where this restaurant is located. One day, one of the artists of the troupe hears in one of the rooms of the hotel Dick Carson singing new songs for a Broadway show to his friend. And then, under funny circumstances, Candy meets Dick.
The plot of the film is trivial, the script, to put it mildly, is not of the highest quality. Doris Day, apparently, understood this - why and tried to do everything to avoid participation in the film. By the way, the picture itself failed at the box office.
But, no matter what it was, on the screen, the actress masterfully hides her dislike for the film, behind her sunny smile and beautiful voice - here it is necessary to give her credit.
Robert Cummings plays the role of composer in the film. Sings for him in the film "Hal Darvin". In general, this role was supposed to play Gordon McRae, but the studio wanted someone more famous. In general, Robert looked very good in a duet with Doris.
Phil Silvers, here is similar to his character from "Cover Girl", shot ten years earlier. Nancy Walker began her film career in 1943 with the film adaptation of the musical 1941 "Best legs forward". But then she acted in films until 1945, and then returned to Broadway.
"Lucky" became her first film role after that. I must say, the actress did not waste her enthusiasm, but here her character, alas, moves to the background. Marta Hyer looks repulsive, as, and, in another film with her participation, released in the same year - 'Sabrina'.
The musical numbers in the film are good, but not too memorable. They are also at a fairly average level. Personally, I liked 'I Wanna Sing Like an Angel', 'I Speak to the Stars', 'Love You Dearly', 'The Superstition Song' and 'Men'.
Overall, it was a good but not brilliant film. The script of the picture is very poorly worked out, the staging of musical numbers is also not brilliant. I don’t underestimate the film just because I like the songs. Fans of the genre should watch the film, although I do not think that everyone will like it.
