What kind of hero? I don't know where to start. This film so impressed and touched me that rational thinking simply refuses to work from emotions.
How many topics are touched upon here: drunkenness and domestic violence, life as an outcast in school, lies, loss of trust, moral rights, the question of the justification of revenge, a change of worldview due to a profound shock in childhood. I will not even hint at the plot in order not to spoil the impression of this brilliant picture in any way, if you want to, you can always read the synopsis.
The movie is like a pulsar, I'm not sure what it is, but that's the word that comes to mind. He develops, goes forward in his turn, and then in a second you are blown to the floor and throws against the wall some frame, facial expression, scene, phrase ... You don't see that often in cinema. For those who have already seen this movie, remember the scene in a Chinese restaurant, in the subway before the fight, the house of a pimp, and the end is simply no words, it is a masterpiece.
A little more detailed analysis:
Actors - damn great! There is simply no place for cardboard characters and template characters, as well as banal performance. All the characters are absolutely unique and the highest worked out, the actors, despite their unknownness, exceeded any expectations, I could not even assume for a second that I was watching a film and not someone else’s life.
Screenplay and directing - perfect, period.
Visual style - in addition to the excellent work of the operator, there is still a style and design of the film, gloomy and sometimes cruel, desperation, anger, thirst for justice, all this is visible even by eye.
Sound design - usually in this category affects only the soundtrack, here it is a little, but it is very high quality. But I would like to draw your attention to the sound design itself - the noises, the voices in your head, the sounds of the streets and the subway. Just pay attention to that.
Even if you’re ready to face the brutal reality of this movie, consider it’s not the kind of movie you can look at the floor of your eye while doing laundry, it’s not the kind of thing you need to stock up on popcorn, and it’s definitely not a movie to watch in the morning, or watch in cheerful company. This film is purely personal, like a monologue with a psychiatrist or a confession.
I want to write too much, but it is better to see it for yourself. I haven’t seen a movie like this for a long time.
