We live to die, or we die because we have lived. Xavier Beauvois, Don't Forget You'll Die Soon
It is very difficult to say what the film is about, it gives rise to too contradictory thoughts, it touches too deep feelings. The fact that you are trying to drive your whole life into a remote corner of consciousness, and it comes out in the most unexpected place and translates your entire harmonious system of worldview into complete nonsense. Because you're about to die. And no matter how much it is noted to you from above, it is still soon, for what is human life in the temporal ratio available to you. But that's not all, it's harder.
Benoit, an ordinary guy who dreams of becoming an art critic, is trying to get away from the army. I won’t go into details as I try, it’s not that important. Importantly, the army informs him that his tests confirm he has AIDS. That's it. He cut it off. But what's next?
You ask yourself what I would do next if I were in his place. What would be my life goals adjusted by the knowledge of my near death? The situation seems quite banal, but the answer to the question is deadlocked.
And if you have a long life ahead of you, will you be able to properly manage the time allotted to you? You think the answer to the question is easier. You're wrong.
Benoit is trying to answer this dead-end question. He tries to take from life, if not everything, then everything possible. Drugs, homosexuality, crime, love, etc.
And as it seems, the answer began to emerge, the answer unobtrusively turning into a dead end. Love is doomed, and therefore meaningless. And the meaninglessness of love emphasizes the meaninglessness of life.
I would argue with this nonsense, but only moving in a completely different direction. Not to take everything from life, but to try, to give something. Not in material terms, but somewhere at the level of the soul.
I know it's complicated. It's hard because I want to live. How much of a life.
And Benoit finds his way out of another moral impasse. He enlists in the Serbian army, whether it is worth mowing from the army, then go into it himself. However, even here it is difficult, it is not so much in the army as in death. And death, as we know, solves so many of life’s problems in one fell swoop, including the loss of meaning in life. Especially if it didn’t come from the beginning.
Come on, let's leave Benoit, let's talk about you and me. Why, we live in this world. To find excuses for your failure, or to find your place in the world. Find by making your personal scale of spiritual and moral values and live according to conscience and social laws.
It doesn’t stop you from remembering that you’re going to die soon.
There is nothing terrible in this, for this is how man is arranged, this is how the world is arranged and this is how the universe is arranged.
Death is only one of the elements and factors of life.
