It happens very rarely with me, but I got to the White Costume by accident – there were free days of Serbian cinema. I never heard about this film, never planned to watch it, but suddenly I realized that the national flavor of this film can not be replaced by anything. Having a very limited idea of Balkan cinema, having watched only a couple of Kusturica films a long time ago, I did not know that such splendor was blossoming there. It’s not that the film is outstanding. Not at all. Just a mix of black humor, whirlpool of passions, some not quite adequate heroes, a little blatantness and obscenity - and it will almost be a comedy of my dreams. What you will see here will not come from any staid American or European comedy. And if you believe my friends, this happens in almost every frivolous Balkan film, regardless of the genre (although do they have serious films?).
Humor rules the ball here, even sentimentalism whips under the yoke of humor. The improbability of events only fuels interest. In fact, such a movie can be watched from absolutely any place, you will enjoy it no less.
I was very surprised when I saw Radmila Shchegolev among the actors. Since childhood, I remember her as a mute girlfriend of Verka Serdyuchka (yes, before she had a “mama” on the stage, she had a girlfriend-conductor on the program, something with the trains there was). How she got here is amazing, but a fact.
The picture is worth attention at least because it gracefully mocks the melodramatic genre, tragedy and drama in general. Nothing for these adventurers from (then) Yugoslavia.
