On the table to two students-restorers gets a mysterious urn, found by workers during excavations in the Viterbo cemetery. Curiosity takes over, the urn opens, and along with the extraction of objects from it and the utterance of incantations, the fierce curse of the most cruel, and, concurrently, the most beautiful of the three Mothers, the Mother of Tears, penetrates into this world. One of the students dies a terrible death, and for a reason the survivor Sarah Mandy is now entrusted with the mission to stop the spreading darkness, evil, and violence, and to deal with such a powerful opponent that, of course, it will be very difficult to do and will require many sacrifices and efforts.
Each subsequent part of the trilogy about Mothers (Suspiriorum, Tenebrarum, Lacrimorum) inevitably lost its quality, as did the “animal trilogy”. Dario Argento had the same pattern with each sequel to go downhill. Only if the gap between Suspiria (1977) and Hell (1980) in quality, and even in the years of release, is insignificant, then the Mother of Tears is separated from the two previous parts by the same parameters by a whole chasm. It is also necessary to take into account the fact that the creative level of the works of the Italian master of horrors from the late 80s inexorably fell and fell. In theory, the plot about the most dangerous of the three Mothers, who was accidentally awakened by the utterance of an ancient spell inscribed on objects from a mysterious urn, was to be embodied on the screen in a chilling nightmare, but the production itself falls under the definition of “nightmare”, and in fact the final part was waiting for almost 30 years! It seems that once the king of horrors Dario Argento was very reluctant to complete the trilogy due to lack of interest in the case, but was forced to somehow put an end to it in sign of fulfilling long-held promises. And, let’s be honest, the time of such italohorror by 2007 simply out. As a result, something close to incoherent thrash occurs on the screen, where the script has been safely forgotten, the actors do not try to play, and even the visual component, which is worth its weight in the director’s works, has lost its riot of colors and at least some in-frame compositions that please the eye, and special effects and the climax scene – that’s where you want to pour tears through laughter! Asia Argento, the daughter of the director, who is assigned the main role, although she plays a medium, but even against the background of other not trying actors looks tolerable. Udo Cyrus in the short role of the holy father pleases only his appearance, as he had nothing to play. A couple of sophisticated murders of Argento-style and a good soundtrack (although even he is scolded) do not save the situation much, but “Mother of Tears”, as it turns out, is not the worst film of the exhaled master – then the unsuitable “Jallo” (2008) and the 10-year knockout career of the director of “Dracula 3D” (2012) will follow in any gate.
The film begins quite mystically and mysteriously. Two museum workers in Rome inspect a new exhibit – an ancient sealed urn, inside which artifacts and scarlet robe with strange writings are discovered. The devilishness that begins to occur further is very well executed, reminded the “good old” film “Wish Executor”. Here’s what happened next...
The three witches have lived in America and Europe for centuries, three old houses were built for them, two witches died many centuries ago, but the most powerful of them – the Mother of Tears – is still alive and intends to plunge Rome into chaos and moral decay.
Witches from all over the world flock to Rome. What do witches look like in the eyes of a man? Are these all-black, dissolute women walking the streets laughing hysterically for no reason? Yeah, you guessed it. Or the ladies overdid drugs. In general, women with clearly deviant behavior. As you can see, the film is full of cliches and cliches.
Medieval brutal executions are shown, and such that “Saw”, “The hills have eyes”, “I see no evil”, all sorts of “Hostels” are smoked in the side. How much I have seen meat and carnage in films, but like that, for no reason, with a sharp transition from talk to meat, it, of course, I ... surprised and stunned.
The main character is a white witch, she is constantly told what to do the ghost of a dead mother. Moreover, it was made so wretched and amateurish, well, why was it involved so cheap and pathetic even by the standards of 2007 special effects – remains a mystery.
The restless sectarians are led by the Mother of Tears, a naked woman demanding meat and blood. The subject of boobs is solved. The final orgy and murder looks as pathetic and brutal as it is ridiculous.
It is absolutely impossible to understand why that unhealthy hysterical laugh of the main character at the end.
P.S.: The film visually looks like it was shot not in 2007, but in the early 90s or even in the 80s.
5 out of 10
The final part of the witch trilogy of Argento!
When the characters began to laugh at the top of their throats, there was a feeling that Argento banally mocked all the fans of the Three Mothers. Let's be honest, Dario really disappointed (or rather unrealistic). Of course, I’m not a director, just expressing my opinion – Three Mothers do not fit this style and time.
"Mother of Tears" cannot be driven under a bloody fairy tale or dream, as it was with "Inferno" or "Suspiria". You don't believe it, artificial cinema. "Mother of Tears" is stupid. It shows the guts in the first few minutes. Um, put iron scrap in the genitals. The problem is that all this brutality, with its hand on its heart, looks rushy and far-fetched. Meaningless violence. Argento deliberately overstepped.
In "Inferno" and "Suspiria" - the cruelest moments looked magical (well, ooh, most of them)! In Mother of Tears, on the contrary, you get disgusted. Cheap move. Why? Because Argento doesn’t have a story (or rather, he does, but he doesn’t tell it damn well), there are no interesting heroes, only violence. And these excuses, allegedly before Argento revolved around specific houses of the Mothers, and now went outside – no, guys, keep such game to yourself.
I don't buy that kind of arrangement. I didn't like Mother of Tears. The actress is cute (although we perfectly remember that beauty from Inferno with a cat), but her image. Ooh. Ordinary sectarian from any mystery B movie (let’s say hello to the Witchcraft franchise). And this gang of monkey minions is such a circus. Goth girls are informal, no comment. Where's the poetry? Where's the flight? Where's the fantasy? It's like the 21st century, so it's so sad. Sorry.
Inferno came out in 1980. "Mother of Tears" after 27 years Long-oh, crazy long. I swear, if he had done Mother of Tears in the 90s (at least), the movie would have looked different. The director himself would have been different. Yeah, yeah, if only there were mushrooms in my mouth. In short, being part of the Three Mothers universe is terrible, not to me. How cheap thrash mysticism about sectarians is a bit boring, for once.
And the apotheosis of sadness - Asia Argento (surprisingly) played poorly. No fire. I'm not saying she's a great actress, but Madame can play better. The whole movie was running with a sour mine, waving my hands.
P.S.
I don’t even want to mention the computer inserts with Nicolodi. It's just bad!
It's amazing what years do with the approach to creativity of directors. Dario, Dario, where have you gone?
“Mother of Tears” is very difficult to take at least seriously, everything in this film resembles a mokbuster from Asylum, and not the work of the famous master of Italian horror.
There's no jallo in here. Only senseless violence from the mother of tears - one of the witches that hang out in different cities of the world.
And if in Suspiria we were shown the incredibly surreal realm of the German mother of sighs, and in Inferno we admired the cruelty of the mother of darkness in New York, then the mother of tears that is in Rome should be the most cruel of all. And the most beautiful.
But the painting doesn't do that. All we can see is Dario Argento’s pretty daughter, Asia, who is running from the police, trying to somehow get out of the conflict with witches.
The Mother of Tears looks as cheap as possible. It's thrash, and it's classic. No pretentiousness or things we could love a director for. And even murder scenes don't give the same aesthetic. I don't recommend it at all. Only if you are a crazy fan of Argento’s work and want to look for references. Then yes, you should.
You're going to be quieter. Further away from the goals.
It was very interesting to see what the peak of such a long lull of the director ("Suspiria" was released in 1977, and "Inferno - in 1980), in fact, so I decided on condition of duty to watch the final part of the "witch" trilogy "Mother of Tears." In general, Mr. Argento is rightfully considered one of the best masters not only of Italian horror, but also of the world, so I had high hopes for this film. Unfortunately, they were only partially justified. And in some places it was not justified, even vice versa.
I’ll start with the ones that I think made the film as a whole. First, the film presents a magnificent set of sophisticated murders in the most naturalistic form and, as it may seem, even too frank: literally in the 10th minute of the film, the author greets us with strangulation of the victim with intestines falling out of the cut abdomen; it should be noted that in terms of sophistication throughout the film, the author did not give up his position. Secondly, the oppressive atmosphere of Rome, embraced by the black magic of the Mother of Tears, which manifests itself on a comprehensive scale, is very vividly conveyed. The third plus was the confident and worthy play of the deeply respected and adored Asia Argento, the daughter and part-time muse of her father, Dario. However, probably mainly the cast and wins the film (even the scene for a few minutes with Udo Kir!). I really liked and juicy fit into the atmosphere of the film soundtrack.
As for the minuses, the most fat and ridiculous was the fact that the central role, the role of the Mother of Tears, was played by a Jewish woman with silicone breasts, Moran Atias, who turned out to be repulsively uncharismatic and screamed aimlessly all the time, causing a desire to grab her by the staves and quickly put her on fire on her own. Frankly, it looks like a mockery after the divine Suspiria—the Mother of Sighs and the Mother of Darkness—though it is the Mother of Tears who is the most powerful and dangerous of the three, and as a result, the most interesting. Anyway, it's a total failure. It is the same with the servants of the Mother, witches, anointed as cheap prostitutes, although they are honored by the presence of a quite sane game, unlike the Great La terza madre. Another repulsive point was ugly graphics, which is forgivable in the 80s, but can already be considered moveton, not the handwriting of the author, in the 2000s.
Overall, the impression is that the 27-year pause between the second and final parts of the trilogy is not entirely justified. It all came out somewhat stingy and uncomplicated, although again in comparison with the earlier works; obviously, the high expectations are caused by the fact that, according to the logic of most, the film should be made better after 30 years, should be brighter and more spectacular, which is not so often. The advantage of “Mother of Tears” is that the film still drags from the beginning of viewing and does not let go until the credits. If I watched the previous 2 parts, then it is necessary to view at least for the purpose of acquaintance. If you did not look, then it would be worthwhile to start acquaintance with Argento with a few other works, but at least with Stendhal's Syndrome.
I have conflicting feelings because it’s not the worst I’ve seen in general, but it’s not the best Argento has. I will pay tribute to neutral
The review will not be much, there is not much to write. Unless it has already been written before me, so I will say in general and briefly.
The film is simply terrible, in terms of production. The actors speak like a camp pioneer in the Friendship circle. Although I have to admit, the first minutes of the film were interesting, and I thought that another, maybe a horror movie was underrated. But it was a huge mistake. The scene in the museum, two women ... at first I did not understand why it seems to me that they are from the extras, the thought flashed, maybe I am not in the mood to watch, but it was true, the first dialogue characterized the whole film, the actors do not know how to play, like extras taken from the street, very casually, without expression, the dialogue is like some kind of eralash. Of course, this is not a scary movie at all. Yes, there is something resembling monsters, demonic forces, but only reminiscent, even they behave like extras. In general, I completely agree with the critical reviews, this is a cheap film, it is unclear why it was shot. And it is filmed by Dario Argento, who knows how to shoot horrors, the more incomprehensible this movie in his performance. It was as if he was shooting for a number, for example, to get an even number that he had in mind and didn't tell anyone. Let his horrors be the best and were filmed a long time ago and for me personally they are not perfect, the same "Hell". Maybe he decided to try himself in the new century, repeat the success, but today the bar is high and you can not scare the viewer with minced meat only. I didn't see it until the end, it was a shame to waste time.
This is the final film of the witch trilogy. The first, "Suspiria", was shot in 1977, the second, "Inferno" - in 1979. It is clear that after such a long break (La terza madre was released only in 2007), the new tape in style, if you will, turned out to be very different in spirit from the first two films. “Suspiria” looks like a surreal tale, as a kind of trip, “Inferno” fascinates with the atmosphere and amazes with a visual feast, and “Mother of Tears” is a horror, action and thrash in one bottle.
Thrash is decent here: rude and nauseating, like a nightmare before waking up, the ending (but this is a “chip” of the genre, and in other films of the master, this is not uncommon), some “arrhythmic” of the plot, plus deliberately insecure play of Asia Argento, which here even resembles Lina Romay. There is a lesbian scene (submitted somewhat smeared), as well as several brutal murders depicted in even more detail than is typical of the “ordinary” Jallo. Especially impressive is the very naturalistically shot episode with the dissecting of the girl’s belly and the close-up language of the main witch, licking tears from the face of a woman who has just been planted on the peak. “Normal” witches, by the way, are unusual and therefore very good: these colored bitches are young, brazen, sexy. However, the “Mater Lacrimarum” itself, although good, is not particularly convincing. The best of witches was, of course, an Asian; her makeup and squirts looked as grotesque as the consequences of her careless peeking into the train toilet. The plot, swirling around – nothing less than – the salvation of the Eternal City (if not the whole world), in itself causes some distrust... but its delusions are successfully absorbed by scenes of fights and violence, the abundance of demonic Italians and the dedication of Catholic priests.
In short, the best thrash among the Jallo, the best Jallo among thrash. And, without a doubt, a very significant film by Maestro Argento... although not the best, to be honest with you.
My review is colored red for several good reasons:
1. It's an awfully boring plot. I watched the film with my father, and he is an elderly man, managed to doze off several times during these 30 minutes of starting. I confess, I also wanted to tame, but I steadfastly sat until the end.
2. And now I ask the question: “What is this?” A horror movie or an adult movie or both? I don’t know, but I think the director just wanted to try something different. So to say, here you have a naked (sorry) ass, the main thing is not to pay attention to the mistakes of the plot.
3. Great soundtracks. Well, I'd rather keep quiet. It’s (apologies again) bullshit in Africa.
4. An annoying main character. Yeah, she pissed me off with her behavior. Just wanted to be caught and cocked somewhere in a dark alley.
The only plus of all this, I think, is a good idea, implemented very poorly.
I never watched the movie (thank you, Cass). Just flashing naked body parts on a screen is not what I wanted to see.
As a result, a third-rate horror film was released - underdetective, nodotriller, prekino for adults. I don't recommend watching.
Cradle of nightmares Dario Argento is one of the masters of Italian horror, whose works made a great contribution to cinema, brought the genre of “giallo” to world fame, and repeatedly confirmed his title of a real master of his craft. In the work of Argento, an interesting event is a trilogy about three mothers, which ends with “Mother of Tears” or the so-called “Third Mother”. Starting back in 1977 with “Suspicion” (also called “Suspiria”, if not to translate the meaning of the word), the trilogy continued “Hell” (Inferno) in no less distant 1979, and only in 2007, after so many years, finally ended “Mother of tears”. I would call this film the best in the trilogy, if not the best in the work of Argento. Two regular actresses of the master: Daria Nicolodi and Asia Argento (daughter of the director) simultaneously appear in this film, as always brilliantly performing their roles. And the plot revolves around the urn found during excavations, becoming a real cradle of nightmares, from which a variety of horrors are born and come to light. In terms of the most frightening scenes, we will be offered a very numerous set with a variety of Horror weapons. Terrible-looking demons, orgies with dismemberment into pieces, terrible black magic and mystical elements, bloody murders, with savoring details and a detailed visual demonstration. If they show a fork separately and the eye in which they are going to stick it, then be sure to stick it in the most spectacular way so that the frost gets through the skin from the cruelty of what is happening. Who will not be frightened by makeup and meat, will be served by mad witches, will be shown as a distraught mother throws a baby into cold water, and another cleaver will cut his own son, at the end slit his throat. And all these individual scary episodes will actually be logical events of a single whole, and despite the fact that the thread of the plot is sometimes omitted for secondary scenes, one way or another, giving us interesting characters, albeit for a short time on the screen, the story itself looks very fascinating, mysterious and mystical. An open box of pandora will give the world a real feast of darkness, and colors and shades will be observed in the strongest proportion. If witches are Gothic, if demons are terribly ugly, if mysticism, then with real miracles in the spirit of invisibility and hypnosis. And of course, all with the signature portion of depraved lust of a large number of erotic scenes, and under the cries of the most cruelly dismembered heroes of the narrative. Step by step, the atmosphere of the film becomes more tense, and the plot will be more difficult to understand, gradually gaining some guidelines and meaning. But difficult to understand this film to call the language will not turn. Dario shoots competently visually, calculating the frame, always clearly making loud chords and focusing on the most important things. And, in principle, the all-encompassing, final chaos, under the cries of martyrs and moans of pleasure, under the choir and dark prayers, ends with the divine vocals of Dani Filth in the final credits, climaxing all positive impressions, and saturating the film with even greater color. A horror movie as it should be. Very well balancing many valuable elements of the genre, with the central core of an interesting story, he is wonderfully able to scare and horrify, perfectly keeps in suspense thanks to the staging of a real maestro symphony of horrors, crowning all his previous creations, I would say. And if “Suspicion” was more like a classic giallo with a fantastic ending, and “Hell” was deprived of integrity and the main characters, then “Mother of Tears” turned out to be a full-fledged mystical horror, able to make a strong impression, and not recommended for viewing by the faint-hearted. And the whole film here is like the embodiment of the main negative heroine - a merciless creation, right pulling all the strings, attractive and creepy at the same time, flawless and insane, and the whole bacchanalia of violence with solemn frankness and cruelty, strong, terrible and amazing. This is the Mother of Tears, this is Mater Lachrymarum. Perfect embodiment of the perfect horror from the best Italian director in the genre of horror. 10 IZ 10 Original
