William Henry Pratt. William Henry Pratt, known as Boris Karloff, was born on 23 November 1887 in the London suburb of Dulwich.
Graduated from the University of London. In 1909, although he wanted to become a diplomat, he emigrated to Canada, where he hired a farm worker. Passionate for the theater, he joined one touring troupe, then another and in the next decade traveled all over Canada and America, playing in minor supporting roles. On the big screen, William Pratt debuted in a cameo role in The Dumb Girl of Portici (1916). Three years later, he returned to Hollywood and began acting in films. Although his first success came after the film Pulp Code, he played more than 60 episodic roles before becoming famous as the Beast in the film Frankenstein in 1931. Later, he starred in many adventure films and horror films, as a rule, in the same roles of villains. In addition, the actor created psychologically complex images in John Ford’s film The Lost Patrol (1934) and in Peter Bogdanovich’s directorial debut Target (1968).
