Over time, Scheinberg became an independent producer and wrote several scripts. One of them, The Prom, caught the attention of Hollywood producers but scared them off with the boldness of the subject. The film was awarded a number of professional prizes, including the Grand Prix in Houston, opening the way for the young director to “big cinema”. In 1998, Stephen Scheinberg’s debut feature film “Kick Me” was released, starring Elias Koteas, which was shown at many festivals, including Toronto, Athens and Stockholm. After two years of working on the script together with Erin Wilson, according to the story of Mary Gaithskill, the director, commissioned by an independent studio, began shooting a film based on the ideas of his famous short film. The comedy "Secretary" - a love story between a lawyer and his secretary, connected by a sadomasochistic relationship - was released in 2002, causing a stormy reception from the public.
