Carl Theodor Dreyer, known as the Danish filmmaker-innovator, was born on February 3, 1889 in Copenhagen. Karl-Theodor spent his childhood in orphanages because his father, farmer Ens Christian Thorpe, did not recognize his son. When the boy was two years old, he was adopted by the Danish Dreyer family with strict Lutheran customs.
Karl-Theodore Dreyer studied at the classical gymnasium. After graduating with honors, he leaves the foster home forever. After a long search for work, he gets a job in the daily newspaper Politiken as an editor. There he writes a column of court chronicles and writes articles on film, literature and theater. In the future, even becoming a popular director, he does not leave journalism.
In 1912, Dreyer enters the atmosphere of cinema, working as a credit writer and plot designer. Already in 1918, he puts the melodrama “President”, which becomes his film debut. The story tells about a young woman-child killer, the plot of which echoes the real facts of Dreyer’s mother, trying to get rid of an illegitimate child.
At the same time, Dreyer’s film “Pages from the Book of Satan” was released, based on the works of writer Mary Corelli. There are four novels about the French Revolution, the Spanish Inquisition, the betrayal of Christ and the revolution in Russia in 1917. All these events were treated as tricks of the devil.
The next decade was the most fruitful for Karl-Theodor Dreyer. During 1920-1927, the director produced seven full-length films. Moreover, the funds for the shooting were often not enough, and he was forced to move from country to country. Among the paintings of this period are the films “The Pastor’s Widow” (1920), “Stalled” (1921), “Respect Your Wife” (1925), etc.
The film, made in 1928, was the greatest event in the work of Dreyer. The film work, which had a huge impact on both the director’s work and the cinema in general, is dedicated to the historical persona Joan of Arc. The film achieved great popularity and in 1958 became one of the twelve best films of all time.
In the life of the great Danish director Karl-Theodor (died 20.03.1968) there were many more delightful films made after his death.
