Vladimir Mikhailovich Beilis, People’s Artist of Russia, was born on April 25, 1937. In 1967 he graduated from the directorial faculty of GITIS (RATI). A talented director, with a bright and original creative handwriting, he immediately took a worthy place in the troupe of the State Academic Maly Theatre, winning the unconditional trust of his colleagues. This was facilitated by the fact that, while still a student, Vladimir Baylis performed performances in a number of theaters of the country, which were successful with the audience and the theater community.
The magnificent sense of style and genre, rich imagination and irrepressible creative energy, the highest professionalism and extraordinary efficiency of the young director gave rise to the Ministry of Culture of the USSR to send V.M. Beilis in 1971 to Ulaanbaatar (MNR) as the chief director of the Ulaanbaator Theater and head of the theater workshop of students-directors and actors.
On his return from Mongolia in 1975, Vladimir Baylis returned to the Maly Theatre. Each of his directorial works, performed on the stage of the oldest drama theater in Russia, became a notable event in theatrical life. “Man and the globe” V. Lavrentiev, “Engineer” E. Kaplinskaya, “Hurricane” V. Sofronov, “Dizziness” V. Sargsyan, “Choice” Y. Bondarev, “From the memoirs of an idealist” according to A. P. Chekhov, “Profitable place” A. Ostrovsky, “Predators” A. Pisemsky, “Tsar Peter and Alexey” F. Gorenstein, “Tsar Boris” A. Tolstogolovskovsky attracted all the attention of the audience. The active nature and thirst for creativity led Vladimir Mikhailovich to television and radio, where he staged the performances “Mother Courage and Her Children” by B. Brecht, “My Friend” by N. Pogodin, “The Tale of Young Spouses” by E. Schwartz, “Smart Things” by S. Marshak and many others.
A peculiar scenic phenomenon was the performance of Vladimir Baylis “Secrets of the Madrid Court”. He withstood several hundred performances with unchanged sold-outs on the stage of the branch of the Maly Theatre, and also had a huge success on tour around the country. In general, the audience sympathies are always accompanied by the productions of Baylis, and another impressive example is his play "For every wise man is quite simple", which deserved triumphant success both in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and in other cities of Russia. I would also like to note that V.M. Baylis gravitates towards creative innovation, performing productions based on the works of contemporary authors in the Maly Theatre. So, he staged in the branch the historical play "Chronicle of the Palace coup" by G. Turchyna, as well as the action-packed and at the same time philosophical thriller by S. Sondheim and D. Furt "How to cover up a murder."
V.M. Baylis also staged a number of performances on the stages of other Moscow theaters: the Central Children's, Lenin Komsomol, the Stanislavsky Drama Theatre and others. The director also puts a lot abroad: in the USA, Japan, the Republic of Cyprus. Such performances of Vladimir Baylis as “The Cherry Orchard” by A.P. Chekhov, “Marriage” by N.V. Gogol, “The Maid of Orleans” by F. Schiller, “Suicide” by N.Erdman and many others, adequately represent Russian stage art in different countries of the world.
V.M. Baylis is much and fruitfully engaged in teaching activities, directs the course at the M.S. Shchepkin Theater School. There are many student performances. Many of his students work in the Maly Theatre and other theaters of the country. It should be noted that V.M. Baylis conducted creative seminars and master classes in the USA, Argentina, France, Spain, Cyprus. Vladimir Mikhailovich also takes an active part in public activities. For almost two decades he has been the chairman of the trade union committee of the Maly Theatre, which plays an important role in the life of this huge team. Baylis held dozens of chef concerts and meetings in factories, rural clubs and military units, promoting the timeless art and skill of the Maly Theatre.
Taking into account the merits of Vladimir Baylis and the unconditional respect he enjoys in the team, the leadership of the Maly Theatre entrusted him with the most responsible and honorary post of head of the troupe.
