A silent short film by Segundo de Chaumont. It premiered in France on October 31, 1908.
A couple arrives at a hotel where only one person works. The building is fully automated: the suitcases carry themselves, the comb combs the heroine, the razor shaves the hero herself. In order to achieve this effect, Chaumont used not magic, but the method of frame-by-frame shooting. The object is removed while the handle of the camera produces a quarter of a revolution, then it is slightly moved, removed by another quarter of a revolution and repeat the operation the desired number of times. When viewed at normal speed, the crest appears to be moving on its own. close

Although not the first feature-length animated film, as is sometimes thought, it was the first cartoon to feature a character with an appealing personality. The appearance of a true character distinguished it from earlier animated "trick films", such as those of Blackton and Cohl, and makes it the predecessor to later popular cartoons such as those by Walt Disney. The film was also the first to be created using keyframe animation. close

Mr. Rockface tells the three suitors they will have to procure their own dinner. Mother is making donuts: She throws up a circle of dough, and a cat shoots a hole in it. Later, he fishes them out of the oil with a fishing line; he eats one, and loses all 9 lives. Mother puts together a basket for Red to take to granny. Red uses her cart, which is pushed by her little dog; the cart gets a flat tire, and she inflates a donut to replace it. A wolf (a human lothario) drives by in a flivver, and dashes off to grandma's house, where he finds a note saying she's gone to the movies. He shrinks his car and stashes it in his pocket, then waits for Red, who stopped to watch a dancing flower. Red arrives, and they go into the house, where he attempts to have his way with her. The dog rushes off and gets help from an airplane pilot, who uses a skyhook to remove the house and, ultimately, lift the wolf in his car and drop him in the lake. Written by Jon Reeves close
