Unpredictably, as most of my life’s key events have been, for a period of several years of late sixties and early seventies, I had the fortune to spend some time, mostly during the summers, with Jackie Kennedy’s and her sister Lee Radziwill’s families and children. Cinema was an integral, inseparable, as a matter of fact, a key part of our friendship. The time was still very close to the untimely, tragic death of John F. Kennedy. Jackie wanted to give something to her children to do, to help to ease the transition, life without a father. One of her thoughts was that a movie camera would be fun for children. Peter Beard, who was at that time tutoring John Jr. and Caroline in art history, suggested to Jackie that I was the man to introduce the children to cinema. Jackie said yes. And that’s how it all began close

In our village, almost everyone drinks, everyone who lives here is drunkards and alcoholics, they steal all sorts of things, then sell them, drink them all. This is how small residents of the Ivanovo region talk about their village. They talk everyday, not seeing anything special in it. No one, neither children nor adults, is surprised that two boys live nearby, abandoned by an alcoholic mother. The children manage their own household, keep goats, repair the roof. The villagers are strange – the boys do not drink or smoke. This in the Russian hinterland is really rare. About the fate of “two boys who do not drink” – a documentary film by Tofik Shakhverdiev from the series “Children’s Little Things for Adults”. close

Since the fall of the Iron Curtain an estimated four million children have found themselves living on the streets in the former countries of the Soviet Union. In the streets of Moscow alone there are over 30,000 surviving in this manner at the present time. The makers of the documentary film concentrated on a community of homeless children living hand to mouth in the Moscow train station Leningradsky. Eight-year-old Sasha, eleven-year-old Kristina, thirteen-year-old Misha and ten-year-old Andrej all dream of living in a communal home. They spend winter nights trying to stay warm by huddling together on hot water pipes and most of their days are spent begging. Andrej has found himself here because of disagreements with his family. Kristina was driven into this way of life by the hatred of her stepmother and twelve-year-old Roma by the regular beatings he received from his constantly drunk father.
