9 years after the release of the film Innocence, its director, Zeki Demirkubuz, created Destiny, turning into a separate film the story of Bekir and Ugur, told by Bekir in Innocence. This is not just a love story, this is a story of human lack of will and blind submission to fate, from which, they say, you can not get away. These lack of will and submission draw the characters of the film further down, they forget about the duty to their loved ones, lose their dignity. How this story ends is told in Innocence. And just as in Innocence, Zeki Demirkubuz ruthlessly exposes the “romance” of the criminal environment. close

THE OWL’S LEGACY is an intellectually agile, engaging, and sometimes biting look at ancient Greece, its influences on Western culture—and how many eras have reinterpreted the Greek legacy to reflect their own needs. Each of the 13 episodes is centered on a potent Greek word: from “democracy” and “philosophy” to “mythology” and “misogyny.” Marker convenes and films symposia—meals featuring wine and thoughtful conversation—in locales including Paris, Tokyo, Tbilisi, Berkeley, and an olive grove on Athens’ outskirts. Footage from these banquets is interspersed with archival materials and interviews (often featuring a stylized or distorted owl image looming in the background). Marker’s diverse group of informants includes composers, politicians, classicists, historians, scientists, writers, filmmakers, and actors. Together their contributions form a compelling (and sometimes contradictory) cultural and historical exploration for each theme. close

Georgios Visenos was born in Eastern Thrace in 1849 and died in an asylum for the insane in Athens in 1896. He was the author of popular, mostly autobiographical novels, including The Only Trip in His Life, many of which are recognized as classics of Greek literature. From this starting point, director Lakis Papastatis unfolds scenes from recent Greek history.
The film begins with the placement of Viesenos in a psychiatric hospital, which was the result of his passionate, obsessive attraction to a twelve-year-old girl named Bettina. Reality and fiction are mixed in the writer’s imagination, and Papastakis skillfully weaves scenes of various periods of Viesenos’ life into a description of his stay in a madhouse. The patient, reciting aloud his recently published autobiographical novel, struggles to remember the childhood he spent in Constantinople and Thrace.
In the center of his memories is his grandfather, who lived the first ten years of his life, hiding behind the guise of a little girl. His family was forced to hide the sex of their child in order to save him from service in the Turkish army: during the Turkish rule, unmarried Christian boys under the age of ten were forcibly taken from their parents to raise them from the evil Janissaries - soldiers of the Turkish army.
In the soul of Wiesenos forever remained the memory of the difficult fate of his grandfather, who lived all his life in fairy tales and dreams, derived from long communication with his grandmother. The complex interweaving of hopes, fear, mystery and hallucinations gives Papastakis’ work a unique poetic aura. Filled with elegant images, the film flips through stories of love, longing, aspiration and unfulfilled dreams. The Only Journey of His Life is an inventive poetic work that enlivens an important era of Greek history and the fragile beauty of artistic talent on the brink of personal tragedy. close

Mavi Sürgün is a fictionalized account of one period of the life of a Turkish journalist who was condemned to exile for an article he wrote in 1925. He turned his punishment into a reward by creating a little paradise in what is today the holiday resort, Bodrum. In fact he is considered by some to be the first ecologist. The film concentrates on this latter aspect of his character and through flashbacks portrays the inner turmoil of a man who is trying to come to terms with his past. The slow pace is somewhat of a drawback, the flashbacks are often confusing and the protagonist is not always very convincing. But the photography of the country side is exceptional Kenan Ormanlar and the short appearance by a very theatrical Hanna Schygulla of Fassbinder fame adds a little spice to the drama. close

Shot over a capricious summer, this film reveals a world of innocence shattered for some children in their school by corporal punishment. It moves at its own pace to reveal a world of children and adults with animals, birds, nature and sea. The film bears a strong imprint of Greek identity with old chairs, priests with black robes and old dilapidated houses. Dimos Avdeliodis shows that children are not just made for mischief as they are shown to earn money in the form of coins which they earn by carrying the cross during funerals. As the children's gang grows bigger, there is a marked increase in the intensity of their mischievous behavior. For example : a hilarious scene is about how small children run for cover after having hurled mud cakes smeared with urine on wasps. The entire film is replete with scenes of this kind but in the end getting beaten by elders for waywardness and experiences of first love might be counted by viewers as their favorite moments of this film. close
