1918, Artois. A train packed with soldiers advances under bombardment. The path is ruined. It's being repaired. But it'll take an hour. Soldier Paul Marchand notices that the train stopped near his home village, where his father, mother and fiancée Marie live, from whom he has not received news for two months. Paul begs his friend and direct commander, Sergeant Lecker, for an hour of freedom. He runs to the village, finds his mother in church, and learns that his fiancée no longer lives with her. Marie now works in a soldier's tavern, whose owner Auguste hangs out with her. She no longer wants to see Paul and says she hates his cowardice. She didn't get a single letter from him. Gradually, Paul realizes that his mother is to blame: she hid his letters and chased Marie away. She did not want her son to marry a girl from an orphanage. Paul is trying to get Marie's forgiveness. Auguste out of jealousy summons the gendarmes, and they come to arrest Paul. Paul fights with Auguste and thinks he killed him. Marie's trying to keep him from showing up. Bombing's starting. Wounded Auguste is littered under the rubble of his cafe's warehouse. Paul jumps into his train at the last minute, which is already on its way. close

Documentary made in Yemen (and first film ever shot in this country) under the leadership of archaeologist Jules Barthou. During the adventure of this film, René Clément will serve four days in prison for having concealed a camera under his clothes, then will be captured by rebels and threatened with being shot. The majority of the negatives will be seized by the guards of Imam Yahia, and it is with the remaining rushes that Clément will edit what becomes The Forbidden Arabia, a film entrusted to the Musée de l’Homme in 1965 where it is forgotten until that ethnologist Claudie Fayein unearths it and has it restored. close
