When is an enemy not an enemy, when is an ally not an ally? The answer to these questions determines the fate of a man. Simons struggle is played out against the rugged landscape of northern Norway. Raised in a close-knit community, he bears the scars of a childhood haunted by rumors. During World War II, the Russians and Americans become a presence in this remote landscape, which will have far-ranging consequences. Victimized by rumor and Norways shifting political allegiances, Simon is denied the final reconciliation he longs for with his community and with himself. When the Berlin Wall falls, his life is once more turned upside down. close

Circus strongmen, bearded women, trained elephants, mad dancers, dwarfs and nude starlets behind the velvet curtains——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— Many fragments have never before been shown on the big screen, part of the chronicle of the turn of the XIX-XX centuries was provided by the descendants of ancient circus families. Black and white scenes are interspersed with color, elephants are replaced by a screen of tigers and acrobats, and all this together forms today in a very unfunny, a rather disturbing picture; a panopticum of morals and savages, retouched by the hands of the director with a gloomy, but an excellent sense of humor. close

The title of the Finnish film Elokuu translates to August. Directed by Matti Kassila, one of Finland's premiere filmmakers, Elokuu was adapted from a novel by Nobel prize winning finnish author F.E. Sillanpää. Simply put, the story concerns the decline and fall of a once-proud family, thanks to the alcoholism of its paterfamilias. Toivo Makela delivers a powerfully effective performance as the inebriated protagonist, avoiding the usual "drunken" cliches. The overlong running time, coupled with the downbeat nature of the subject, limited the film's worldwide appeal. close

Bodil awards: Best Film and Best Actor (Allan Olsen). close

This is a comedy about people who work in the theater, live for the theater, think of nothing but the theater. The new project is Mozart's Don Giovanni, in which the director insists to give it a brand new interpretation and an avant-garde treatment. Now, he has to deal with the violent objection from the actors, the musicians, the singing coach, the stage manager, and even the cafe bar attendants and the cleaners.
