Anything can happen on Russian roads and is precisely shot by the dashboard camera. Super-objective video registration grows into the strong image of Russian national character – with its permanent awaiting for the miracle and habitual approach to real dramas. A forest on fire as a symbol of Russian hell, a military tank at a car wash and car chase in the vicinity of Kremlin shot with a dashboard cam at the same time when Boris Nemtsov, the leader of political opposition, was shot dead near Kremlin. Dashboard cam depicts life in it’s purity as an unbiased observer. close

Sergey Dvortsevoy makes his international debut with this astonishingly intimate portrait of a nomadic family on the Kazakh plains. Several scenes in this slow, elegant film betray a certain dry humor -- a child devouring the last of a bowl of yogurt and then crying; a cow getting its head stuck in a pail; and a woman singing to herself, accompanied by her snoring husband. Other scenes capture the nomads' hardscrabble lives -- drunken herdsmen in the grips of existential despair, growling dogs, and a camel enduring a rather grim septum piercing. By the end of the film, the family pulls up stakes and herds its sundry four-legged beasts -- camels, cattle, goats, dogs, and horses -- to a more fertile plain. This film was screened at the 1999 Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival. close

Exposure time – in photography it is nothing more than the time that an object lives in a frame. And based on this, any photo is not only a two-dimensional graphic composition. It also has a third, temporal dimension, a temporal depth. She is the bearer, the keeper of time. Which means memory. Whose memory? Faces, objects, landscapes captured in the picture? The photographer's own memory?
Making the photo material for the film “The life time of the object in the frame” (the Hour of life of the object in the frame), its authors inevitably found themselves in a maze of “aliens” and their memories, “alien” and their time. And in search of a way out of this maze, they themselves became part of it and the material for their own film. close
