The documentary Changing the Game directed by Shilpi Gupta (When the Storm Came, Al Qarem) tells the story of an unusual football tournament in which six teenagers from three continents met.
The raging AIDS epidemic in South Africa, the military conflict between Israel and Palestine, the American ghettos of Philadelphia – each of these territories has become a home for boys who dream of winning their first Cup. Fate put them on the brink of survival, and yet the characters of this film continue to be the most ordinary children who had to grow up too early. Today they are united by street football, and tomorrow, perhaps, these teenagers will decide the fate of the planet. About the journey to the dream and the tournament, unlike other competitions, the creators of the picture tell, carefully preserving the individuality of the characters, each of whom deserves special attention. close

Following a disastrous drunken display at her younger sister's wedding, 38-year-old Buyi has her parents worried that she’s wasting her life working meaningless jobs. Her parents insist that she take her head out of the clouds and focus on finding herself a good man and settle down. Buyi is gutted. She returns from KwaZulu-Natal feeling hopeless about her love situation. Where is a heavyset black woman going to find a man in South Africa? Desperate, she reluctantly allows her sexy best friend, Lindi to help find her a man in the exclusive 'man market.' Between questionable concoctions, a quirky magician with a cat obsession, and a sex addict that can't get enough of a big butt, Buyi quickly loses hope of finding Mr. Right. A hilarious, heart-warming story of acceptance and hope. close

An experimental look at sexual identity, redemption and grace – The Prodigal tells the tale of a young man, Mark, caught between two worlds; the world more
An experimental look at sexual identity, redemption and grace – The Prodigal tells the tale of a young man, Mark, caught between two worlds; the world of his Christian father and that of a beguiling young man, Dean. This state of decision is depicted on screen by the vivid white beach where Mark is seen walking – alone, isolated and searching. His search leads him deeper into the waters of the ocean, even as he delves deeper into Dean’s world. This parallel visual interpretation provides a unique and important look at the issues that face our young generation, and the question that Mark – and each one of us – must face in this life. Are we ever in something so deep, and so far, that it is impossible to get back to shore? close

All animal species have natural boundaries, and although the limits are set by nature, parents or family members show that in the wild they are also related. History of the Main Complaint is the sixth film [of a] series and is based on twenty-one drawings. It was made shortly after the establishment in South Africa of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, headed by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. It was set up to conduct a series of public hearings into abuses of human rights perpetrated during the apartheid era. The hearings, in which individuals told their stories of personal suffering, were held in order to make reparation for abuse and in the hope of creating reconciliation between peoples. The underlying theme of this film is a (self) recognition of white responsibility. This is played out through a 'medical' investigation into the body of Soho Eckstein, the white property-developing magnate and greedy-capitalist protagonist of most of the preceding films, which provides the starting point for a revelation of conscience. fantasy tale about a young Zulu who leaves his village to go to the city, falls in love with the new music he hears there, and returns home to form a Zulu jazz band. The South African production and distribution company African Films followed up the success of Zonk! with Song of Africa. This is a fantasy tale about a young Zulu who leaves his village to go to the city, falls in love with the new music he hears there, and returns home to form a Zulu jazz band – which then goes to the city to compete with other bands, and comes out on top. As in the earlier films, the impact of American jazz and popular music is enormous. Like African Jim and Zonk!, Song of Africa draws on the best talent from the townships. Director Emil Nofal and director of photography Dave Millin ensure high production values, making it an above-average B-movie. close
