The Orange River is an oasis in arid lands. One of the largest and most beautiful rivers, it is the geographical border between South Africa and Namibia. This river is considered one of the most picturesque in the world, along with the Nile, Amazon, Ganges and Zaire. It is a vital feeding artery, the driest areas of South Africa, such as the Northwest Province. Despite the harsh conditions, the area has many inhabitants, both people and animals. The river got its name during the first colonization, the manager of the Dutch East India Company christened it in honor of William of Orange - Prince of the Netherlands. close

Ukwaluka is an ancient circumcision ritual for young men still widely practiced by the Xhosa in South Africa. It marks the transition from youth to manhood. A boy who has just undergone circumcision sits in semi-darkness in a simple hut on a hill, far away from the village, as prescribed by the initiation ritual. He is covered from head to toe with a paint made from clay which makes him look as white as a goat. This should be a period of healing, but he is cold and in pain. His grandfather, who is supposed to induct him into his new life, has not yet appeared. According to the belief system of the Xhosa, Ukwaluka also purges the boy from homosexual desires, for which there is no place in the world of adults. close

The authors of the documentary “Renewing the African Ark” talk about one of the unknown, but no less important aspects of wildlife conservation in Africa. more
The authors of the documentary “Renewing the African Ark” talk about one of the unknown, but no less important aspects of wildlife conservation in Africa.
Once upon a time, all the animals of Africa could move freely through the vast expanses of this large continent. There were no borders, no farms, no cities with skyscrapers, no roads. A lot has changed since then.
Illegal hunting and destruction of green spaces have led to the fact that wild animals can now live only in reserves, sanctuaries or national parks. This helps rare and endangered species not to disappear. Each of these protected areas is a kind of modern Noah’s Ark.
However, this situation poses a new challenge – how to maintain genetic diversity and prevent genetic interbreeding in such a small, limited area. Some of these animals need to be moved from one Noah’s Ark to another.
Moving Africa's Ark follows one such operation to capture and transport animals across the country. It’s actually not that easy, because the animals you deal with are very dangerous — rhinos, elephants, lions and bison. The movement of animals is the only way to maintain the unstable balance of the ecosystems of the African continent, thereby ensuring the preservation of the country's unique wildlife. It’s not an easy and dangerous job, but someone has to do it. close

One of the earliest exploitation films from South Africa, directed and produced by independent film maker Pierre D. Botha. This is a classic example of a ‘restless youth’ film. The action takes place in Johannesburg (The Godless city of the title) and focuses on the youth sub culture of the ‘Ducktails’ (“a white youth gang subculture which emerged within post Second World War South Africa. Rebellious, hedonistic, apolitical and showing little respect for the law, education or work”). close

This affirming story of one woman's struggle to free herself from the past, and how that affects the small fishing village where she lives, shows that faith can move mountains, or unmake them. When the seamstress Klara loses her father and her fiance at sea, she decides she never wants to see the ocean again. She builds her house behind a huge sand dune, and even refuses to eat fish. Several years later, however, she receives news that makes her start carting away the dune, bucket load by bucket load. It turns out her boyfriend is alive, and that hes been living in Cape Town for the past six years. He ran off because he made a local girl pregnant a pregnancy attributed to the local schoolmaster. As the villagers watch Klara move the dune, they begin examining their own lives, and the entire community undergoes a wondrous rejuvenation. close

Anyone who grows up in Sandton spends a lot of time hanging out at pools and drug-filled parties – for this part of Johannesburg is the richest spot in the whole of Africa. Necktie Youth portrays this first post-apartheid gilded youth in striking black-and-white. Soft colours are reserved for their childhood memories of the early years of the rainbow nation. White 19-year-old Emily did not understand the codes of their set and could not take the pace of the ever-changing, fleeting liaisons, says the super cool, black and privileged September when he tries to explain to a TV reporter why Emily hung herself in her parents’ garden.
