Once Upon a Time… Man is a French animated TV series from 1978 directed by Albert Barillé. It is the first in the Once Upon a Time... franchise. The series explains world history in a format designed for children. The action focuses around one group. The same familiar characters appear in all episodes as they deal with the problems of their time.
The series' opening and ending title sequences famously used Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor as the main title theme music. Shortening the piece to only 2 minutes in length, the introduction uses the very beginning, which jumps into the start of the middle section and finally the dramatic ending to coincide with the destruction of Earth at the end of the intro. close

Around the World with Willy Fog is a cartoon adaptation of Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne. The cartoon was produced by Spanish studio BRB Internacional with animation by Japanese studio Nippon Animation. In the same vein as BRB's Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds, the characters are anthropomorphisms of various animals as the species depicted are of much greater variety than in that series. The core trio are all felines being pursued by three canine foes. Willy Fog is depicted as a lion, while Rigodon is actually a cat and not a lynx because of his tail and ears and Romy a panther. close

Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds is an animated cartoon adaptation of the classic Alexandre Dumas story of d'Artagnan and The Three Musketeers. Most of the characters are anthropomorphizations of dogs, hence the title of the cartoon; although there are a few exceptions, most notably Dogtanian's two sidekicks Pip the mouse and Planchet the bear, among several others. close

Historical sources claiming that the Emperor's wife Claudius Messalinus and his niece, the mother of the future Emperor Nero, Agrippina, were irreconcilable enemies are unscrupulously lying. In fact, the two most depraved women of Rome were best friends, inseparable in their love affairs. But too pretty was the young Gaul Pijon, brought still consul Claudius from the next campaign. And even if the future emperor believes that the young man will serve only for his own pleasure, women strongly disagree with this. But to share a cute Pigeon is not an easy thing... close
A musical short film about the extermination of Roma by the Nazis during World War II. One of the first directorial works of Tony Gatlif and the first more
A musical short film about the extermination of Roma by the Nazis during World War II. One of the first directorial works of Tony Gatlif and the first in which he addresses directly to gypsy themes. In fact, all those elements from which Gatlif will build his famous films in the future are already presented here: ethnographic documentary, fantastic musical “pressure”, attention to the dark pages of history (the Roma will be remembered in Swing as well), the fate and inner strength of a person; a fierce speech against social injustice.
Perhaps that is why the plot of the tape is extremely simple, even schematic. Roma are sitting in a concentration camp, behind barbed wire and trying to use flamenco – “song and dance” – to express their protest, to ignite themselves to fight. These expressive musical numbers, performed in the French-Spanish "narrhechia", however, are wordless. The first number is actually a protest. The second is the laconic statement “I am a gypsy.” The third song is based on the phrase “Run the gypsies, live the gypsies”. Thus, the nomadic image of gypsy life acquires the maximum weight from Gatlif, as the only possible form of existence, and “flight” becomes a life victory. Although, of course, it can be viewed melancholy as a defeat, a lack of strength to fight.
I don’t think the German overseers need translation either. These are monosyllabic orders. Their execution is clearly illustrated by the director. In addition, they are on the "heard" of anyone who has seen at least one picture of the horrors of World War II. close
