Elvis Presley's first year (March '56 to January '57) on TV is spotlighted on "From the Waist Up," the third of three Elvis: The Great Performances DVDs. And what a time it was, as his appearances on the Dorsey Brothers, Milton Berle, Steve Allen, and especially Ed Sullivan shows electrified an ever-growing national audience with tunes ranging from the lascivious "Baby, Let's Play House" to the reverent "Peace in the Valley." Written by Presley biographer Peter Guralnick (Last Train to Memphis) and narrated by U2's Bono, volume 3 is the most documentary-like of the three discs; some basic history is provided (the Sun Records years, the arrival of Col. Tom Parker, etc.), most of which will be old hat to Presley aficionados. Unfortunately, it's also the only disc that truncates some of the King's performances, but the three straight complete songs from the '57 Sullivan show that end the program help make up for that. --Sam Graham close

Mannheim Steamroller's music is incredibly moving by itself, but add an enthusiastic live performance by some very animated musicians and an intense multimedia presentation and the result is even more powerful. This 56-minute Christmas concert features many favorite numbers from the album Christmas in the Aire, but "Joy to the World" perhaps best epitomizes that distinctive Mannheim Steamroller sound: powerful synthesized melodies and harmonies, an intense drive and pathos, and skillful ornamentation. close

In many ways, there'd be no New York City without composer Leonard Bernstein -- at least not the romanticized, sepia-toned town he wrote about in his songs -- which makes this homage to his talent so fitting. Filmed in the Big Apple locales celebrated in his immortal music -- including Times Square and Central Park -- this 1997 documentary commemorates Bernstein and his legacy. Among the featured performers are Mandy Patinkin and Audra McDonald. close

Each of us once in his life, under one or another circumstances, tapped the rhythm of a memorable melody. Well, you know, it's happened. Stomping, slapping. But they did it mostly with their hands and feet. In extreme cases, they used the table lid. However, you and I could not even think of what came seven years ago in the minds of two simple street dancers - Luke Cresswell and Steve Nuck Nicolas: from any improvised means (be it the lid of the garbage can, the garbage can itself, an empty rusty barrel, tea (!), apples (!!), broken baths and toilets, mops-bladders, socks) to create a rhythm. And not just one person to knock him out. Not even two. And ten, twenty, thirty... Make sure that all the noise comes together. And it made music. The idea resonated with many who are now playing in the troupe. Note that the title says "performers." The phrase “primary role” is inappropriate here. Because each of these people plays a major role. And she's just amazing. There are no truly professional actors in Stomp. There are brilliant dancers who have an incredible sense of rhythm. And, of course, an excellent sense of humor: in one scene, the participants of the “Stomp” begin to tap the rhythm, rustling with card decks, hurling tea, chewing apples and banging faceted glasses on the table at the same time! close
