Andropov Yuri Vladimirovich (1914 - 1984) - Hero of Socialist Labor (1974). Party and statesman. Born in the village of Naguska in the Stavropol region. He studied at Petrozavodsk University. From 1936 on Komsomol work, and from 1938 on the party work. During the Second World War he was one of the organizers of the partisan movement in Karelia. In 1967-1982 - Chairman of the KGB of the USSR, and since November 1982 - General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee (after L.I. Brezhnev) and since June 1983 - simultaneously Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Critics called Andropov "the harsh heir to the iron Felix." Under Andropov, the center of power moved from the Central Committee of the CPSU to the KGB. He achieved for the KGB the status of a “state within a state”, not subordinate to anyone, but subordinate everything around him. In 1982-1983, under the leadership of Andropov, reforms began to be implemented in the country to correct negative phenomena in the life of the party and the country: restoring discipline and order. But these reforms were not to be implemented. Andropov died in February 1984 after a serious illness. close
